Excerpt: The Porcupine Gold Rush was a gold rush that took place in northern Ontario starting in 1909 and developing fully by 1911. A combination of the hard rock of the Canadian Shield and the rapid capitalization of mining meant that smaller companies and single-man operations could not effectively mine the area, as opposed to earlier rushes where the gold could be extracted through placer mining techniques. Although a number of prospectors made their fortune, operations in the area are marked largely by the development of larger mining companies, and most people involved in the mining operations were their employees. The mines peaked between the 1940s and 50s, but continue to produce gold to this day, although the many smaller mines have been consolidated into a small number of larger holdings. By 2001, 67 million troy ounces of gold have been mined from the Porcupine area, making it by far the largest gold rush in terms of actual gold produced. For comparison, the well-known Klondike Gold Rush produced about 12 million troy ounces. During the late 1600s, explorers and fur trad...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12994019 ... Read more

Product Description
This is an entertaining, authoritative, and highly anecdotal look at the golden era of Canadian pop music-the historically important decade that gave birth to such internationally respected recording artists as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Ian & Sylvia Tyson, Gordon Lightfoot, Murray MacLauchlan, Bruce Cockburn, Buffy Saint Marie, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Ronnie Hawkins. In the bohemian sixties, Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood was a hippie haven-our version of Haight-Ashbury or Greenwich Village, a place where coffeehouses like the Riverboat and the Purple Onion offered a creative mecca for musicians from across Canada. They came from Saskatoon and Winnipeg, from Vancouver and Edmonton and Halifax. By the middle of the sixties, they had forged an adventurous, original sound that the American music press proclaimed "a fresh wind from the north". It was Canadian music's first wave of international success. In researching the book, Jennings conducted more than 100 interviews with musicians, managers, club owners, booking agents, and record company executives including Gordon Lightfoot, Murray MacLauchlan, Bruce Cockburn, among many others. Many of those he's interviewed have provided the author with period photographs and other memorabilia for reproduction in this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Remembering Yorkville
I had the extraordinary good fortune to spend parts of four summers (1964-1967) in Yorkville, which was a long train ride from my home on the Central Coast of California. At the time I was in my late teens.I was attracted to Canada by recordings I had heard of Ian & Sylvia and Buffy Sainte-Marie, but when I arrived in Toronto, I was captivated by all the rock'n'roll bands that had been inspired by the Beatles, as well as more permanent fixtures like the Hawks and Luke & the Apostles.I'd planned to visit for a week and stayed for a month. If my father hadn't threatened to come and get me, I might have stayed.

The other three summers I arranged to get work in and around town (which wasn't always easy for an American visitor) just so I'd have enough money to go clubbing.Back in California, I went to the Haight-Ashbury and other parts of the San Francisco scene, and I got down to the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles every once in a while, but I always felt that Yorkville was the real deal.

Jannings' book is the perfect recollection of the times. His stories of the musicians and their managers are spot-on.The only thing I would have wished for was more coverage of the fans -- all you really get in this book are general comments and a few tidbits about Cathy Smith, the professional groupie.

They say that if you remember the Sixties, you weren't really there, but my experience of Yorkville wasn't like that.I remember the hard-driving sound that characterized the bands of eastern Canada, and Jennings has definitely captured that spirit in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Groovy Goldrush
Nicholas Jennings is the first author to write an entire book devoted to the Toronto music scene of the 1960's.He follows the making of the Toronto Sound, starting with the folk movement, through rhythm and blues, touches on garage bands and the jazz/country/rock/soul sounds which definedYorkville music in the late 60's. The volumes of information imparted areastounding, and the story is very interesting, especially for those with aninterest in the Sunset Strip, Bay area, Soho and Greenwhich villagehappenings. Jennings keeps the book flowing by using a time-line style, andmanages to throw some of the more obscure names in the Toronto scenearound. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a fascination for themusic of the 60's, and I urge Jennings to keep on writing his fantasticbooks! ... Read more

Product Description
An omnibus of the best tales ever told about the Klondike and its characters.

The fourth and final book in the exciting Pierre Berton's History for Young Canadians series is The Great Klondike Gold Rush. Canada's best-known writer, Pierre Berton, tells the stories of the prospectors, the gold seekers, and the unforgiving land and gold that drove them mad. The Great Klondike Gold Rush is the acclaimed six-book history of North America's last great gold rush. Originally printed as separate volumes in the Adventures in Canadian History series, the titles in this omnibus are Bonanza Gold, The Klondike Stampede, Trails of '98, City of Gold, Before the Gold Rush, and Kings of the Klondike.

"Because he grew up in Dawson City, Yukon, in the afterglow of the greatest gold rush this continent has ever known, no story was closer to Pierre Berton's heart than the one he tells in this volume....Only a few men struck it rich in the Klondike Gold Rush. But nobody who survived the adventure ever forgot it. The same can be said of this book. If you read it, you will never forget it."
Ken McGoogan, author Lady Franklin's Revenge and winner of the 2006 Pierre Berton Award. ... Read more

Product Description
In the boomtowns of the Alaska-Yukon stampedes, where gold dust was common currency, the rarest commodity was an attractive woman, and her company could be costly. Author Lael Morgan takes you into the heart of the gold rush demimonde, that ""half world"" of prostitutes, dance hall girls, and entertainers who lived on the outskirts of polite society. Meet ""Dutch Kate"" Wilson, who pioneered many areas long before the ""respectable"" women who received credit for getting there first ... ruthless heartbreakers Cad Wilson and Rose Blumkin ... ""French"" Marie Larose, who auctioned herself off as a wife to the highest bidder ... Georgia Lee, who invested her earnings wisely and became one of the richest women in the North ... and Edith Neile, called ""the Oregon Mare,"" famous for both her outlandish behavior and her softhearted generosity. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Time Girls gives a pretty good time.....
The story of the women who ventured north to Alaska during the gold rush is a great story. However this account is a bit rambling and lacks continuity from one chapter to the next. There are several misspelled words and grammatical errors (no spell check or grammar check???).Overall...a good account of the spirited 'working women' who joined the rush to the gold.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yukon is good.
If one has visited the Yukon, any part of it, you naturally become interested in some of its history. In the summer, this place is where the gods dwell, if one does not count the mosquitoes. In 1898 though, it must of been a little more difficult for those that came in seach of gold. With the modern roads and modern vehicles, it is like driving in the country, however, if one gets about a mile of the regular roads, you go back in time real fast.It must have taken real guts to go to the Yukon in 1898.And the women that did so had to be brave and tough. This book is an interesting tale of real women that were brave and tough, but they also needed to make some money and fast. Some of them made alot of money and some of them suffered greatly.Very interesting reading if one likes true history.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Time Girls of the Alaska-Yukon Gold Rush
I did not know anyone could make sex so boring.Part of the problem lies with the lack of rich source material on the "girls".This results is one sketchy case history after another. The profiles of the men are richer and more interesting, in part because tthe men left journals and other documentaries of their lives.I had a hard time getting through it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Time Girls with hearts of Gold
I just turned the last page of this delightful book and I was sorry to see it end!I just returned from my third trip to Alaska with 4 books in my suitcase and this was one of them.I find the early Alaska pioneers such strong, interesting people. The book mentions how Alaska had a "winnowing" affect....only the strong survived and these women were tough and independent!

The research that went into this book was impressive - the most quotes I have ever seen in a book - but it lends credibility to what the author is saying about her subjects. The gold rush history is detailed as the "girls" followed the rush from town to town, so you get great historical detail on the gold rush, the towns impacted by the rush in additional to meeting the colorful ladies of the "line".

A fast paced read with wonderfully rich old black and white photos that bring it all to life....

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Time Girls
Good book to get a real feel and facts for the life of the ladies of the evening in early Alaska ... Read more
