Product Description
An analysis of pan-Canadian nationalism on a political level, this book does not question whether nationalist approaches to issues such as free trade, foreign investments, or culture are normatively "good" or economically beneficial--matters that have arguably been exhausted in recent years--but instead studies what these approaches are and how they have influenced government action. Specifically, the author considers the interplay between nationalist ideas and organizations, on the one hand, and federal politics on the other. ... Read more

Product Description
From the party's beginnings in the Territories though its convulsive 1929 campaign and first victory that year under J.T.M. Anderson to its shadowy dissolution nearly 70 years later, the Saskatchewan Conservative Party struggled for relevance and survival. After their 1929 win, Conservatives waited half a century to form their next government, when they won the 1982 election under Grant Devine--only to be "mothballed" 15 years later as the new Saskatchewan Party emerged to carry the right-wing banner in the province. Over the years, Conservatives must often have asked themselves, "What's this all about? Where are we going? Where is the promised land?" At provincial election time, in particular, Tories have been left, more often than not, "singing the blues." ... Read more

Product Description
In 1928 the Soviet Union proposed the establishment of an autonomous socialist Jewish republic in the far eastern reaches of Russian territory. In Birobidzhan the eternal search for a Jewish homeland would be realized and Jews would possess their own institutions, which would function in Yiddish. A 'new' Jew would be created, emancipated, and rejuvenated. Although the project was eventually revealed to be a fraud, thousands of left-wing Jews in Canada and the United States passionately supported it and campaigned on its behalf - some even emigrated to Birobidzhan. The Canadian Jewish Communist movement, an influential ideological voice within the Canadian left, played a major role in the politics of Jewish communities in cities such as Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg, as well as many smaller centres, between the 1920s and the 1950s."Jerusalem on the Amur" looks at the interlocking group of left-wing Jewish organizations that shared the political views of the Canadian Communist Party and were vocal proponents of policies perceived as beneficial to the Jewish working class.Focusing on the Association for Jewish Colonization in Russia, known by its transliterated acronym as the ICOR, and the Canadian Ambijan Committee, Henry Srebrnik uses Yiddish-language books, newspapers, pamphlets, and other materials to trace the ideological and material support provided by the Canadian Jewish Communist movement to Birobidzhan. By providing the first account of the rise and fall of Communism in the Jewish community of Canada, Jerusalem on the Amur makes a substantial contribution to our understanding of twentieth-century Jewish life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better books I have ever read
Despite what the subtitle book says, this book is more than the inevitable lightness of being Canadian. It is about the lightness of being any one of the modern states, Canada, The United States, or Australia. Gwyn's argumentis that these countries were founded upon principles that were radicallydifferent than previous one's (freedom, equality, diversity, egalitarianism, the appropriations and others). These countries were notbuilt upon any explicit ethnic or racial creed, or language, or even acommon history.

Together these values made them great and an attractionto people all over the world. Now these societies they are slowly beingeroded by other modern principles like the emphasis on rights and less toresponsibility, hyper-individualism, excessive cultural differentiation, loss of a sense of history, globalism, multiculturalism and many others.Gwyn believes that are undermining the very values that made thesessocieties great.

Within the context of Canada Gwyn sees the emphasis onrights as a problem. He argues that too many people are focusing on theirrights and less on the responsibilities of citizenship. The other is theincreasing disposition for immigrants entering theses societies toemphasize their cultural or ethnic differences while choosing not to abideby any values of the society that they are entering. What Gwyn sees is atendency for such a society to become increasingly a collection ofindividuals and less of a community striving toward a common good. Herightly points out that the loss of civility, tolerance, and markedindifference are the first signs of such a shift. He argues that Canada hasmore at stake than any of the other two countries should this progressioncontinue.

Unfortunately Gwyn does not make a cogent argument. At somepoints, the book seems to go off in many directions at once. Although Iagreed with his basic premises, I wanted him to not only state and showinstances of the problem, but also to give some concrete solutions to it,even if they are exploratory. After reading you get an idea of what Gwynfeels the solutions are, but you can only do this indirectly. (I am stilltrying to figure out the point to his chapter entitled "PostmodernDominion".)

Despite this drawback, I still believe that this bookshould be read, if not for an interest in Canada, at least for an interestin how a society can evolve as a result of the unintended consequences ofotherwise well-meaning ideas as well as the possible effects that the samechanges he sees in Canada will have here in the States. Gwyn's soberingargument is not racist or eurocentric as books of this type sometimes are. This book will undoubtedly give you a new cultural perspective. Maybe thereader will find the solutions that Gwyn could not. ... Read more
