WONDERFUL MANUAL
Book is very usefull because the author put how to do in every step of making candles. Every single detail is treated with the most absolute precision, starting from the supplies, pan, scale up to temperature, measurements, something that it is little rare to find in another books. I bought 9 books in one batch, all are very good, but this one shows the basic for a beginner like me.

Excellent How to candle book
A fantastic "How to" book. From start to finish, great instructions and pictures. Very easy to follow and covers "Everything"! If you want to make candles, this is the book for you!

Not a good choice....even for beginners
I bought the book with just a little knowledge of the candle making industry.The problem with the book is its not updated for the new technology and materials that are used in candle making today.Yes it does a good job of breaking down the VERY BASICS but thats it.You need to know more about the industry than this book covers.I got more information from watching videos on youtube and the different candle supply companies websites than the couple of books I recently purchased.Watch videos and get up to date information on new waxes and materials. Save yourself the $15 or whatever you may spend and research the internet and the big candle supply companies out there.They know whats new and what works

When they say basic, they mean basic.
This is a great book if you've never read anything about candlemaking previously.I didn't realize it was going to be so 'simple'.It's extremely basic and I found it almost childlike.It's very easy to understand, has good pictures, and would be great if you are a real beginner.

I started candle making several months ago. I wish I had had this book on Day 1. I pretty much figured out the basics on my own, but would have saved a lot of time (and mistakes) if I had had this book to start with. Great read....even for a first timer!
The Everything Candlemaking Book: Create Homemade Candles in House-Warming Colors, Interesting Shapes, and Appealing Scents (Everything Series)

This is a great book! I picked it up and learned a lot about the history of candles, which really intrigued me.When she talks about how they were used for warmth, light, and fragrance in the time before electricity, I was enriched with a deeper knowledge of candles. I was also intrigued when she talked about their spiritual/religious significance and how they are viewed by various religions.I have always wondered about that sort of thing.

The recipes/directions for making different kinds of candles (rolled, tapers, pillars, containers, etc) is pretty clear.She also gives you tips on some common tools that you need (skewers for puncturing air bubbles, lollipop sticks for immobilizing the wicks, etc) and how she gets them very cheaply (She shops second hand stores, garage sales, and discount stores for most of her supplies!).

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a beginner all the way through novice (she has a lot of tricks for making the most complex things with her candles).

Expected more pictures of how to
I will agree that this book has a wealth of information, such as history and useage of candles, along with good descriptions of the types of candles, etc.But what it lacked was good pictures showing step by step processes of candlemaking.It described a lot of things in text, but I am a picture person.Also I didn't find anything about Soy candles.Anyway, I was a bit disappointed due to the lack of pictures.

A fun and informative read
This step-by-step book is written in an easy-going style, as though the author is right there with you, walking you through the candle-making process.It has Do's and Don'ts and even some humor along the way. I also liked the candle facts that are sprinkled throughout.

The Best Little Candle Making Book I've Seen!
I have to admit that I am definitely not a crafty person either (as the author states in this book), but I am motivated now to start making candles! I had actually considered learning this hobby as a way for a little creative outlet. I also wanted to teach my daughters something that they could use to make some side income. This book tells you everything that you really need to know about making your own beautiful candles. I am so excited to get started! I love the way that the methods are done step by step so that even I can't get lost!

I bought this book as a gift for my girlfriend's mother who is big into arts and crafts, not to mention I need brownie points, but I gotta say this book over delivered on what I expected.

Great reference tool on the craft
This book touches on subjects like gel wax, soy wax, and fragrance throw, just to name a few. It is very complete and detailed and easy to follow. It also has a section on the business side of the craft, giving lots of advice on craft shows and many other ways of making money with your craft, as well as what you need to know for setting up the business. VERY USEFULL SIMPLE BOOK
What I really liked in this book is the beginning, she talks with details the general equipment and supplies, she presented each one with pictures, very nice. The projects are simple but very detailed with pictures step by step, there are nice ideias of different candles, the project Marble Slab is wonderfull, the candles looks like marble, it is amazing the effect she created. Too simple for me
1. This small book does not go into detail about anything. I does not describe the candle making process very well.

2. Its what, 16 recipes? Basic high school arts and crafts stuff.. not for someone interested in new ( unique ) techniques.

3. You can google this information in 10 minutes. Don't waste your money.

Disappointing
This looks to be a really beautiful book. But if you are intending to try and make the really nice looking swirly candle o nthe front cover in the centre, you will be very disappointed. The cover of this book is very deceiving. It shows how to make most of the ones advertised on the front, but not the real pretty which is only in the book for display purposes only. I find that highly deceitful to print pictures on a book of how to make candles.

Decent Guide
A decent guide to candlemaking. The book is rather short on text and consists mostly of pretty pictures, and that's a little irritating. Still, there is enough here to teach you to make your own tapers, although I wasrather surprised at how easy it was. Great of you've never done it before.

The Weakest of Books, Better Available

Being a professional candle maker (3rd generation) and an avid reader,I have a huge collection of candle and soap making books. After looking over "Making Candles & Soaps for Dummies" for perhaps the 3rd time, I can honestly say that there are many better books covering both subjects. This book covers only the very basic information and will leave you with more questions than answers.

For the candle side, I highly recommend Beginner's Guide to Candlemaking or the instructional video Introduction To Candle Making

On the soap side, try Smart Soapmaking: The Simple Guide to Making Traditional Handmade Soap Quickl Safely, and Reliably, or How to Make Luxurious Handcrafted Soaps for Family, Friends, and Yourself.

These are both great hobbies that can become good sideline business and there are good resources available on the subject... this book is not one of them.

Can't imagine it being more complete.
I aspire to make my own candles for special occasions. I picked up this book because it looks like the only one I'll need. It takes you from candle-making (rolled, dipped or moulded) to candle decorating and when you're done with that, you learn to make your own candlesticks, candelabras, pots, holders, lanterns, sconces, and chandeliers. When you're done with THAT, you can create stunning displays based on color or season, decorating your home or for entertaining. Every single page has full color photos of the steps of the project and the finished project. You can simply browse the book as an art book - it's lovely. I love the folk art carving project and gold-leafing project. Bravo for a great craft book.

Elegant designs
When Gloria says "complete" she means complete. There are so many projects in this book i wonder if i'll ever complete them all. She has some of the freshest ideas i've seen. Very elegant in the designs and for the most part, easy to follow instructions. A book for all those interested in the elegant side of candles.

WONDERFUL PROJETCS
This book shows step by step how to make different candles. First she put a very big picture of the final product, then she provides the list of supplies including the formula, measurements, temperature, all that you need in the most perfect order, very clear and beautiful pictures, a professional work. Also she shows many different ideas of candles. some of them so sophisticated, I loved the book. Other thing that call my attention, she teaches you how to mold, how to sculp the candles to form a little angel, for example. This is a detail that it is rare to find in another books. Good for Beginners

Sorry, but I don't like it
After all the good reviews, I'm sorry to have to bring the mood down. I just didn't like this book. There are some good things, mainly the spiral binding and some of the photos.What I didn't like about it was the fact that the soaps she shows as examples are just plain ugly, I'm sorry, but they are.I can't see how they would inspire anyone.The other thing that turned me off was the advice to leave your soap making utensils for 24 hours before cleaning them....WHAT? If you leave your gloves on you can just wash the soap off your tools and then put them in the dishwasher.If you want a good, basic book about soap making then pass this one by and get Anne Watson's Smart Soapmaking.Mind you it isn't a spiral format, and there are not any pretty color photos, but it is by far a much better book than this one.I've been making soap for a while, and honestly if I had picked this book up first, I would never have started.....check this book out firstSmart Soapmaking: The Simple Guide to Making Traditional Handmade Soap Quickly, Safely, and Reliably, or How to Make Luxurious Handcrafted Soaps for Family, Friends, and Yourself

Excellent book for learning how to make handcrafted soaps.It is very informative with full color step-by-step pictures.It includes several easy to follow recipes for vegetable based soaps.There is also a section on how to make your own wooden soap mold and soap cutter.I have made one successful batch of soap and my husband made the soap cutter tool.I would recommend this book to all people who want to learn the art of soap making.

Not for beginners
This book lacks enough detail on the basics and focuses too much on advanced projects to be a good beginners book. The photos are nice but often not very helpful. If you have experience as a candle maker, you might find some good ideas. True beginners should look to "Basic Candle Making" by Eric Ebeling, editor.

A clear and elegant presentation.
If you are only going to invest in one book -- this should be the one!In addition to instructions to create classic and creative candles, there are great explanations of wax types, molds, safety precautions, and more. All this information is presented with words of encouragement and enhanced with well-photographed examples.

Boring, and not much help to beginners
De. Bob should stick to soap.His candle making book is not for a beginner who just wants to know the basics in simple terms and get started.Although I am sure some of the information will be helpful to the more advanced, it was not what I was looking for to get started.

Essentially Most Useful
I was first struck by the photo content.It seems that procedures to make every common type of candle (and several uncommon ones as well) are fully illustrated with lots of photos that make reproducing the results extremely easy to follow.Not only that but the authors helped to dispell my bewildernment over the many, many ingredients available on the market which are useful (or not) for producing special effects.For instance, the suggestion to forget gloss ingredients and use higher temperatures in making the candle is simple and highly practical.
I own or have looked through almost every candle book on the market, and I think this one is clearly the best resource book available.I just wish it were longer.
Finally, to my surprise, I discovered that this is the only book that is recommended by my primary ingredient supplier.They seem to agree that it is the most factual and accurate book on the market suitable for those getting started as well as for those needing more info as they scale up.

Ingredient selection for candles can be baffling, but Dr. Bob covers the gamut and tells which work or when there is a better way to do things.Lots of projects with easily available equipment as well as how to use fancy molds, or even make your own molds!Over 250 beautiful color pictures make procedures and results easy to understand.The section on how much wax is needed for a particular mold is invaluable, and I personally love the section on wax characteristics.
The FAQ is quite complete and look for tips on the best ways to make or avoid mottled candles, glossy candles, and which special ingredients can be replaced by the right technique.This is a valuable book for scout leaders, first timers, and experienced candlemakers alike.But then, what would you expect from the authors of Essentially Soap. ... Though quite brief, this guide manages to touch upon the important basics of getting started in candle making. Most of the designs are fairlystandard though nicely executed; a few of the ideas are a bit more unique,such as little clown candles molded from modeling wax to perch atop achild's birthday cake, jeweled pillars adorned with gold wax and colorfulbeads, or a bowl of real-looking fruits that are actually all moldedcandles. Nothing easy about this
The pictures are beautiful, but that is the only good thing I can say about this book.The techniques seem very complicated and are not explained or illustrated enough.This book does not even mention beadwax which is what I intended to use and think is probably the easiest way to make candles in containers.Also, not nearly enough information on adding scents.If you ask me, this book was a waste of my money.

Don't buy this book if you want to learn how to make the best scented candles around.
I purchased this book thinking that, with it's help, I would be able to make my own awesome scented candles - the ones like the new scented oil candles from Glade.Given the right amount of information about making scented candles, I would be able to deduce how to make something at least similar to these.Unfortunately, this book was more of a primer to candle making than an encyclopedia, as I expected from it's title.This book provides little more information than you could get with a beginning candle making kit.Don't buy this book if you want to make highly scented ("triple scented") candles.Instead, check out http://www.crazyforcandles.com/comparison.html for information on buying these types of candles from other manufacturers. ...
