But a little dated. Be sure to also check out Ian Fisher's "How to Start a Career in Information Technology, 2nd edition" 2007.

Nothing really new here
If you want to get into IT, this book presents a great description of what it is really like to work in IT.

If you already work in IT, this book makes you feel better with similar frustrations from other people.

I already work in IT and I was not very interested in hearing other people complain about how overworked they are. Yeah, I know, I'm in the same boat.

Here's a better way to get your IT career in gear - get your degree and get certified in your area of interest. That's it, no secret, really.

This book is a must for all IT professionals! It contains information relevant to most, if not all, IT careers whether you are looking for changing your career or just keeping yourself marketable. Ms. Goff includes great interviews with people in all aspects of IT. The interviews include job descriptions, the good and bad parts to a particular position, and some helpful hints and ideas (there is a great interview with the creator of the Elvis Presley/Graceland web site!).Ms Goff introduces you to many IT careers and tells you what are the related skills you need for that position. She also helps you decide if a job is right for you (I really liked reading about the different postions and learning what skills are needed in each position and what type of person is usually good in that position). IT REALLY DESERVES ZERO STARS
The most amazing thing about this book is that it is still offered for sale! It was just extremely weak when published. Now it has the distinction of being extremely weak AND completely outdated.

Interesting, but pretty shallow.
While this book provides a decent description of the different certifications and general job functions, it does little to educate the reader about what is actually needed to become certified.As the title suggests (exclamation point and all) this book serves primarily as a gratuitous cheerleader for the joys of joining the Microsoft fold.Use it to explain to your spouse or parents what it is you want to do if you need their support. ... The absolutely worst book I have ever read
This book is worthy of negative five stars.In short, its awful.

Amazon's summary states:
This book is not filled with theoretical babble but practical and useful information, knowledge and experience!

OK, I agree this book is not filled with theoretical babble.It's just filled with babble, dribble, and repetitive restatements of self evident truths.In short, a complete waste of money.

You want examples?

How about this on page 74:
"Give yourself the chance to enhance your skills in document creation by securing yourself a reference book that can help you widen your knowledge set about how to create an effective and well delivered document.There are so many books that you can have either offline or online.All you need to do is to read its primary contents and evaluate the feedback that the book has received."

The problem is that the book provides no lists of useful reference books, no list of useful websites, no list of useful forums to join, despite talking about them in the abstract.You would be better served by not reading this book and just search on google for Business Objects.

If you do an Amazon search on the author, you will see he is prolific in writing IT career guides.I wouldn't be surprised if this book were created by simply doing a mass replace of Oracle with Business Objects for one of his manuscripts.

Complete no brainer information, not even close to useful information
After reading the book Beginning Java Objects by the same author, I was completely disappointed reading this book The book ( Taming the Technology Tidal Wave ) offers no big ( if any ) know-how on managing the IT Tidal wave. The information offered in the book is no brainer and can be learned in real time within 1 yr into an any IT firm.

Save the buck for a walk in the evening treating yourself with an ice cream than buying this book which offers no new piece of information.

Be proactive, develop resilience and never fail again in IT World!
You can't change the entire IT world but you can change the IT world for one person by giving a book called "Technology Tidal Wave" as a gift to someone you really care about. It could be a gift of lifetime.

I got laid-off after 20 years of my successful career as a mainframe programmer. I was almost on the verge of quitting this IT job market and this book "Technology Tidal Wave" came to me just-in-time to rescue me. It is well written by Ms.Jacquie Barker who has earned very good reputation as a Leader, a Professor and an Author in the IT Software Engineering Space. The book is very insightful. There are lots of good tips and time tested sincere advice that you can rely on at this juncture in your career and forever. I wish I had them all as early as 10 years in my career. Don't take a second chance, don't even give second thought but buy this book and help yourself and others. It is more than a survival guide. I promise you will feel motivated, encouraged and will have new perspective towards your IT career.

Also, if you are new to OO paradigm like me then buy "Beginning Java Objects" 2nd edition and C# book as well for solid foundation and to expel any doubts about what really objects are and how objects work internally..... Good Luck.

Unfulfilling. Very little substance.
Due to the overwhelmingly positive write up and 5 star reviews on this book I purchased it without blinking, and I regret the purchase.

Nearly every paragraph had at least one bold and italicized word or phrase, which was grating in and of itself, but the most frustrating thing about Taming the Technology Tidal Wave was that most of the advice given was trite.

The one piece of advice that I appreciated reading was to focus on learning the paradigms rather than frantically trying to learn each new tool that comes along.

If you are a programmer and want practical career advice, I would suggest "The Pragmatic Programmer", "How to Land the Tech Job you Love", and "The Passionate Programmer".

A Must Read for IT Professionals
I read this book and thought to myself, this book describes me perfectly.If you're in the IT industry and feel as though you're drowning in an ever changing IT environment. Trying to update your skills and keep up with the pace of technology.Then Jacquie's book is a must read. The "Sound Bytes" are relevant, practical, and enlightening.Her wisdom and guidance on topics from technologies, to career tracks, to resumes are outstanding.I highly recommend acquiring a copy of this book.

Enjoyable and Informative
This is a great read!It's jammed with practical pointers, some of which you might think are common sense, but never really thought about. When the time comes for you to ponder career decisions, having read this book will be a real timesaver.
