My students hate it!
I am an instructor who teaches Novell Intranetware to students who don't have any previous computer experience, and they DETEST the book. I never noticed all the extra crap in it until they pointed it out to me. I spendmost of my time pointing them to the EXCELLENT diagrams and charts, andsteering them away from the text... It needs a re-write very very badly.Iam going to recommend to my school that we change textbooks for thiscourse.

Looking for another book!
I didn't log on to review this book but to search for another. I have to agree with most of the other reviewers. I haven't taken the exam yet because after going over and over this book I have no confidence that I canpass the exam. All the extra fluff was terribly distracting! I couldn'tkeep track of where he was going most of the time.I passed my MCSE selfstudy in 4 months. So I don't think its just me. I going to try anotherauthor.

Please....NetWare is frustrating enough
I had to purchase this book for a network administation class. I find the zen and quotes and quizzes, annoying and distracting if not down right frustrating.After jumping back and forth trying to figure out what the heckthe author's point is...he throws in another piece of useless humor--I usethe term loosely. (Perhaps he should consider writing aerobic exercisebooks). The case studies might be useful if the answer was, in fact, inappendix C. re: chapter 4 case study.I certainly hope I can convince myinstructor not to use any more of these books.

TOO MUCH FLUFF
THIS BOOK WAS PROVIDED TO ME BY THE SCHOOL I ATTEND TO PREPARE FOR THE CNA.THIS BOOK IF FULL OF USELESS TID BITS.I HATED THE QUIZZES AND ZEN. ONCE IT FINALLY GOT TO THE INFORMATION, IT WAS VAGUE AND DISORGANIZED. IF IHAD TO RELY ON THIS BOOK TO PASS I WOULD HAVE NEVER MADE IT.LUCKLY, I HADAN EXCELLENT INSTRUCTOR.

Is it bad comedy or certification material????
This is the worst series of books I have ever used in any certification program.You get to read quotes from Jerry Seinfeld, but I doubt that he could set up a Novell Network, what is the point???The same info over andover and in no particular order, the author jumps back and forth and neverfully explains any one topic. . .Save your time and money, either getsome real world experience or find a class because this is not going tohelp you certify ... Network administrators don't necessarily have to understandspecific procedures to use within software packages. Rather,administrators must have a deep, general knowledge of what's goingon. The general skills required of a network administrator are notunlike those required of a medical doctor, and the "networkdoctor" motif of this book is both entertaining andappropriate.

Most of this book is about general troubleshootingpractice (keeping records, testing possibilities, and eliminating themone by one) and about procedures unique to fixing problems inNetWare. Clarke endorses specific products (for example, he cites AMPtools and connectors as the best he's worked with and the least likelyto cause trouble), which is the kind of information new CNEs need.

The author attacks troubleshooting generally, describing NSEPro andother diagnostic tools, and then moves on to particular troublespots. He devotes entire chapters, full of hints and procedures, tonetwork interface cards, hard drives, client machines, andprinters. He then takes a turn for the theoretical--also part of theCNE exam--to discuss network topologies and protocols in depth. Anextremely handy appendix correlates exam topics to specific pages inthe book. Quiz questions appear throughout the text, and a companionCD-ROM includes a database of I/O card properties and a testsimulator.

One of the best CNE books out there!
I like the way Clarke organized the relevant topics in passing the CNE exam---adding Humor to a boring concept. This book also contains stuff that would help you even for MCSE. It is really a good source of knowledge forboth CNE, CNAs etc. wannabees.

Great Book - highly recommended
Clarke has an easy way of presenting what is otherwise complicated technical concepts.The book is organized well for the reader to take breaks in the middle of topics.

Technically complete, but info is hidden in useless garbage.
It's too bad that Mr. Clarke feels the need to share his thoughts on Zen, include useless quizzes totally unrelated to NetWare or networking, and offer crossword and wordsearch puzzles instead of useful, real-life quizzesand tests.This book was quite complete as of it's publication date, butit is a little out-of-date now.Mr. Clarke also confuses readers withinconsistent terminology at times, once referring to a server as adedicated 'workstation' rather than a dedicated computer, and a continuingreference to a 'central print queue' rather than just 'print queue.'Hisconstant medical analogies and references are mundane and worthless.Thebook is written to about an eighth grade level, not an eighth grade readinglevel, but an eighth grade intelligence level.It's like reading a child'sbook of NetWare.The book does appear to be organized well and thenecessary information is contained in the book.It's just unfortunate thatit is buried between and beneath endless pages of medical school wannabediatribes, 'Zen' garbage, and off-topic quizzes as filler.The book isnearly 1,000 pages, but if the useless garbage were removed, it would bemore like 600-700 pages.It's truly too bad because Mr. James does appearto know NetWare very well.I teach computer courses for a business collegethat uses this book as a text.It is extremely difficult to teach fromthis book because of the filler and the lack of useful quizzes and tests inthe book.The Clarke Tests on the CD are good, but are filled with stupidsound clips from movies and TV that are of varying volume, some quiet andsome quite loud.They are very unprofessionally recorded and very annoyingduring testing.The tests on the CD included with the New Riders MCSEbooks are far superior to the Clarke tests, however.The saddest realityis that this is apparently the best book available other than Novell's owntraining books which are much more expensive and are apparently onlyavailable through authorized training centers (with training courses).

This is the book to understand networking fundamentals!
As an MCSE who has been teaching Networking Essentials to systems engineering students I figured that I would breeze through the Novell Networking Technologies course.Whoa! The Novell course goes intosubstantially more detail than the Microsoft course.I found Clarke's bookto be an excellent guide through the maze of material that Novell requiresfamiliarity with.And it was a pleasure to notice that this book seems tobe the foundation of many other guides and lectures that I have beenexposed to both in Novell and Microsoft curriculums.The author does gooverboard on Zen commercials, puzzles, brain teasers, and the like but itis easy to skip over these parts when you have time only to study materialyou will need for an exam (or in my case, for my next lecture).

Best book I have ever seen.
It does not matter if you are studying for your CNE or CCIE, this book covers the basics of the OSI model and it will get you passing your CNE exams and get your on your way to the more superior Cisco certificationseasily.

I got my CNE with this book and I did not use any others.It wasnot boring like other books I glanced at.This book not only helped mewith my CNE and is helping me with my Cisco certifications, but it alsohelped me review for my A+ certification.

Great book
This is a text book. It expalains in great detail how everything in a wireless setup works including some history throught each chapter.It will explain how radio waves propagate (frequency), every kind of wireless technology, all of the standards like 802.11, and much more. It also goes into good practice of setting up HAN, SOHO, WISP, ENTERPRISE WAN.This book is filled with knowledge of wireless technology. I purhcased the book, not because I attend college, but because I wanted to learn about wireless technology.I was completely satisfied with everything I learned from this book, and have a much greater understanding of all of the aspects of wireless tech.

An Internet business classic
While many of the references in this book are certainly somewhat dated (originally published in '97 - a lot has happened on the Internet since then), The Geek's Guide is still a bulls eye, on-target business guide for web designers, especially those just getting started. If you're a new web designer or web programmer you'll quickly learn what you need to know to succeed.

The fact that it was written before the dotbomb era means that you're getting solid advice free of the bubble hype that crashed the stock market and put almost every dot com company out of business - and left many self employed web designers scrambling to find paying clients.

I wouldn't worry too much about the fact that you won't even find the phrase "business model" in the book (at least I couldn't find it.) Most internet business models (except of course, good old Amazon!) turned out to be either illegal stock frauds run by con artists or the same as legitimate old fashioned bricks and mortar business models. And we all know that today, it is the bricks and mortar companies that have the most work and the most money for web designers.

So I say, grab this book now, even if you can only get a used copy.

Doctored reviews.
Most of these reviews are frankly doctored.This book is not nearly a 5-star book...its tenets are largely rehashed and repackaged "standard" business wisdom, much of which becomes heavily diluted (at best) when dealing with e-business models.It also does not offer any true insights on the uniqueness of Internet-oriented business (and which most of us have found out the hard way, if not at least partially by common sense), let alone any "definitive blueprint" for succeeeding in designing and running one.It's all just fluff.

Do yourself a favor and pass this book by; there's a plethora of consulting, design, and internet development-oriented books that will fill the bill several times better than this one purports to.Review doctoring is nothing new to most experienced Internet consumers now; and this listing falls so obviously in that category that it's frankly embarrassing (and disgusting).But you don't have to believe me...if nothing else, buying this book will at least get you a "funny cover" with a t-shirt-worthy geek icon (ahem), if not the info you seek.

Very comprehensive, very thorough
With the Geek's Guide, Schmidt proves to the world that he has the'write' stuff.Schmidt has a knack for focusing on the most important aspects of any topic.

In terms of content, this book is jam packed with highlytailored and specific information crucial to sustaining a successful andprofitable web development business.Although the book's focus is on webdevelopment business start-ups, anyone who is looking to strike out ontheir own in any field would find this book useful.Furthermore, potentialclients of web development firms may find much of the information in thebook useful when dealing with internet businesses and negotiating thecreation of their own site.

The writing style of the book is very clearand concise and Schmidt leaves no room for misunderstanding in his prose. There is absolutely no internet hype or marketing spin in this book, norare you treated to a dry, textbook or computer manual treatment of how torun a business.Personally, I found Schmidt's geek humor (there is oneremark at the end of each chapter) to be well, in a word, geeky.

From anorganizational standpoint, Schmidt gets you in the right frame of mind torun your own business by the end of the first chapter.Whereas mosthome-business books would devote all of their chapters to Freudianself-analysis (ridiculous intropspective and self-assessment questions),finding a good location for a business, and choosing the best form ofbusiness, Schmidt takes you through all of that in one balanced chapter. You will also get some very good ideas on how to build a good, winning,effective, and professional team.

His second chapter tells you inbrutal realism just how your customers will look at you, and how you shouldcarry yourself around them (still another chapter tells you exactly how todeal with your client's misconceptions and false expectations of theinternet to your advantage).Four more chapters are devoted to making thatall important, life-sustaining sale- from finding customers, planning andmaking the sales pitch, closing the sale and ultimately to writing up acontract.He wraps up the book with a chapter on growing the business andattaches a modest business plan in an appendix.

Schmidt earns my respectbecause he tells you upfront to obtain good legal and accounting help longbefore you launch your venture.Yet, the real value in this book is theway Schmidt lays out setting your rates and making certain that you getpaid in two understandable chapters.If you are looking to get on the webwith your own business in a big way, forget all of those other books andstart reading this one today!

A MUST HAVEfor the entrepreneur!!
This book is very comprehensive and touches on points of business that the creative artist ignores.....The tips on marketing/advertising are invaluable!! The 'cold-call' concept is elevated to reality in this book.Many designers/web developers do not have a clue to expand business beyondthe ol' word-of mouth....This book makes networking an attainable goal! Another asset is the readability of this book. I read it cover-to-cover inabout 2 days. You do not have to have a degree in marketing or accountingto grasp the concepts.It is about time that someone came up with a'Business' book from a marketing perspective! I am so glad that I foundthis book.....before it was too late!!!
