This autobiography is written to follow the initially turbulent and seemingly random path of education and life experiences of the author in the 1930s and 40s during the oppressive 3rd German Reich. These early childhood insights made the author an undesirable student in the 1950s in the totalitarian German Democratic Republic, and ultimately brought him to the USA. Ideally prepared, he completed a first-rate education in record time, leading in 1965 to a tenured professorship in chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, specializing in research of the solid state of linear macromolecules (polymers, plastics). Early retirement in 1988 led to a new 20-year career as Professor and Distinguished Scientist at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The unforeseeable results of writing this book were the many links between Bernhard Wunderlich's love of teaching and research to the earliest experiences in his life. He would not want to miss or change anything.

A Personal Recommendation
""A Science Career Against all Odds" is an exceptionally well documented and complete autobiography of Bernhard Wunderlich, my thesis advisor and mentor, who tells it as he saw it... and as he lived it...starting with his early years in pre-war Germany. The book is nicely enhanced with photographs and punctuated with abundant personal anecdotes and observations on politics, travel, culture, research, teaching, friends, raising a family and more.

This book is a special joy for me since it covers the period of our extended professional relationship starting in 1968 when he hired me as his research technician at RPI--without the benefit of a college degree--through 1993 when I completed my doctorate at Rensselaer and then on to more recent collaborations at GE and NatureWorks.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Professor Wunderlich's remarkable personal journey, his eyewitness view of polymer science going back to the 50's or the art of teaching science at the collegiate level--given by a man with a deep and abiding commitment to teaching, a tireless work ethic and a long and distinguished career in macromolecular research.

For those fortunate enough to be counted among the many friends, students and colleagues of Professor Wunderlich, "Against all Odds" is simply a "must read." You can count on many smiles and Aha! moments when you do. Promise! ... Read more

The Scientist's Blueprint
Dame Nancy Rothwell has written a fantastic book which is *probably* the "only organized" blueprint for scientists at all levels.

Must read for anyone reviewing history in North Texas.

A 'must read' for anyone who has been touched by cancer
Having myself grown up in Dallas, I have watched Chip Moody for many years.There would always be a night when Mr. Moody wasn't in his usual anchor chair behind the news desk ~ he was back in the hospital. My brotherwas just diagnosed with cancer, and it appears to be the kind that theauthor of this book has ~ lymphoma.So I was not at all interested inreading a "sterile' medical thesis or a 'grab your hankie' sad story.Mr. Moody tells of his many adventures throughout life.Some have comefrom being in the profession that he is, and some from having the cancerthat he has found himself facing.But be prepared to laugh, Mr. Moody hasa real knack for telling stories! The case studies are entirely on people in the biotech sector. Good ideas, but not as useful for people outside of this field. Would have been more accurate to call the book "Alternative Careers in Biotech."

Great reference book!
This book is a great source of information for graduate students and PhD's!I am currently a graduate student finishing up my thesis work in biomedical sciences.I decided that academia is not where I want to spend my future yet felt that I really did not know what other choices I had available that did not require yet another degree.There are far more career options available than I could have imagined on my own!I like that each career has a detailed description of a 'typical day' and what characteristics a person needs for each career.Also, each career alternative describes to varying degrees how we can start on those career paths.For the most part we can't expect to head our own venture capital firm or lead a business development team in a major pharmaceutical company after graduation.But we can certainly learn how best to go about getting to that stage at some point because the book describes what job skills are needed for each profession.

For those of us who like to do a little job searching in our spare time, a lot of chapters include websites where jobs are posted.This is a great source to find out what entry level positions are available for people looking to get out of the lab.Probably one of the most important things is I have learned from reading this book is that I have acquired a much bigger skill set than just how to do bench work.This book by no means informs us how to land the jobs we desire, but it is truely a great reference manual for those of us who are clueless about life outside of academia.

good overview
I am a postdoc searching for a new career to get into. Even though I love science I am tired about the politics and grant situations that get worse and worse. I bought this book and read it. Even though it of course does not cover all possibilities it gives you some good new ideas of what you could look into. It is written by people who actually did the step to leave science. Most of them describe you briefly what their way was like, give you some information on what their current job is like in comparison to their former science job (the pros and cons), describe an average workday and finally give you some information on how you could get there. Those chapters are great. But there are also some chapters in which the authors used the space to point out how great of a person they are and how they succeeded because of luck and courrage. Those chapters are less useful because they don't give you any information of how YOU could try to get to a similar position. However, they do show that life isn't over when you quit science. There are tons of possibilities out there waiting to be found by you. In summary: definetely a book to read if you are trying to decide if you want to stay in or leave science...

The work environment for scientists changes quickly, and the path to changing careers changes as well. This book has been written by people who changed careers YEARS ago -- when minimal skill sets were sufficient to change careers. Learning how to use a word-processor in the 1980s was apparently enough to land you a job in writing or law. Knowing a bit of biology and how to use a computer was enough to get you into the field bioinformatics. Not anymore! This book offers little advice for what a competitive job market is like today, how and where to find employment, and what skills to acquire to take the plunge from lab to a different career.

I've still been thinking about this book and how useless it is. What do I recommend instead? In the years since I've made my first review of "Alternative Careers in Science," I've become interested in business-thinking, for lack of a better word, and I've taken a few classes in entrepreneurship and read a few business books. I highly recommend "A Whole New Mind" by Daniel H. Pink in place of "Alternative Careers in Science." "A Whole New Mind" isn't about leaving academia, specifically, but it is a good book to get you prepared for a transition and think about other skill sets and contacts you would need to explore to leave academia. I haven't completed the career transition myself, but "A Whole New Mind" has me off to a good start.

This book changed my working life for the better.
As a recent Biology Ph.D. graduate, I am fortunate to have found this book about 1 year before graduation.I have always enjoyed biology, but my heart was just not in research, poring over the same project and data, day in and day out, 50 hours a week.Biology Ph.D.'s are, unfortunately, trained with tunnel vision in terms of career development.You are lead down a research path, and graduation represents a fork in the road:You can choose a life of academia following your mandatory postdocs, or you can immediately enter industry, following your mandatory postdocs.
For those who don't know, a postdoc is a type of internship following your graduation.You are the personal Igor for the head of the lab (usually a professor at a university or medical school).Hours are typically 6 days a week, 60 hours minimum, and earns about $35,000.You work on at lest 2-3 projects for the lab, and are expected to assist in training the new graduate students as well.In addition, you are expected to find your own grant money.
After the extreme stress of graduate work had been completed, call me crazy, but I decided an increase in stress was not what I wanted.Don't get me wrong; for those who love research, this is heaven, but not for me.
A year prior to graduation, I found this book.In my multiple years of study, no one had ever mentioned a sentence about any of the career options mentioned here, ALL of which were accessible to a Ph.D. student.About two dozen career options are mentioned here, from clinical research, to broadcast journalism, to sales...lots.Every career is discussed in detail from a personal account of someone who actually works in the field.Everything is discussed, from salary, hours, a typical day, to extra training and advancement opportunities.
This book did nothing short of change my career outlook from a pessimistic view of my science career to a wonderful new career in medical writing...earning twice as much as the postdoc I quit after one week.(If this doesn't appeal to you, there are plenty of other choices in this book.)

Good introduction, but doesn't get into the WHY, only the HOW
I'm so glad there are books like Global Citizen that tell you and try to show you how to live overseas.I never knew they existed before either, since expatriation from America is a subject that the US media considers taboo and non-existent.But yet, it's very real because many are dissatisfied in America and realize that it's not the ideal world it claims to be, nor is it the place where whatever's not possible is not possible anywhere else.

In fact, my greatest discovery overseas is that:"Beyond North America, the social climate is INFINITELY more natural and free flowing, and I am NEVER without attractive female companionship."

This book though, only gets into a few reasons for expatriation, describing only a few benefits that are at the tip of the iceberg.The rest if mostly a how-to guide that covers some practical aspects of it.So far, there hasn't been a book that addresses all the deep real life reasons for living overseas.In short, it talks only about the HOW of expatriation, not the WHY.And shouldn' the WHY be dealt with first?That's what all these authors seem to be missing, except for me.Perhaps the "WHY" reasons are taboo?

Thus, I've volunteered to become the first to address the deep "WHY" reasons and put together a website and ebook called Happier Abroad at http://www.happierabroad.com to help inspire people to pursue international living, dating and traveling, and cultivate an awareness of the positive benefits overseas unknown to most Americans, who instead are living in fear and isolation perpetuated by the US media and culture which tells them that there is nothing good outside the US and that you are empty inside and need to work and consume to fill that emptiness.It's a soulless life lacking connectedness with others and inner life.

Check it out.It'll give you a whole new dimension on life.

Outstanding Resource
"The Global Citizen" is a MUST READ for anyone seeking to establish an international lifestyle. I especially liked the sections that allowed real people who've moved abroad the opportunity to write about their experiences. These "journal entries" gave me a lot of inspiration. The book is loaded with program information for study, voluteering and work abroad. There is a chapter on financing your journeys which offers information about scholarships and grants that I didn't even know existed! I highly recommend "The Global Citizen" for anyone serious about going abroad short-term or long-term.

Good introductory value, poor on details
If you are under 20, not sure what to do with your life and contemplating about how cool it is to travel to Europe and save the rain forests - this book is perfect for you (even better if you want to save rain forests in Europe). Then, if you are not from US, don't have kickass amount of money to spend or know exactly what you want - bypass this title.

The Global Citizen offers a lot of ways for an American to go abroad; if you live elsewhere, only 20% of all the suggestions are relevant to you. Of these 20%, most require significant investment. What's more important, neither of these ways is described in detail.

Large sections of this book are dedicated to the fine art of proving that 2 and 2 equals 4. For example, the author dedicates 2 or 3 pages to explanation why it pays to know languages others than English.

On the other hand, little to no useful tips are given on most important subjects, like convincing the foreign employer to hire you, or listing places with high expat concentrations, etc. Most of the work abroad opportunities are standard English teaching stuff - I don't need to buy a book to tell me about it, really.

The book is full of howlers. Page 199: 450 - 2550 British pounds are translated as 310 - 1767 US dollars (neat, huh?). Page 88: Arctic Odysseys provides high quality travel experiences in the Arctic regions of Canada, Greenland, Siberia and China (someone please find Arctic China for me). Page 213: the author discovers a new country: Moldova-Ukraine. And this is just a small part.

Again, good enough as introduction, many ideas, very low on details.

Inspirational Book!
This book is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone!The author writes on a personal level like she is talking to you and it is also written from a emotional level so it is easy to understand.This book gets you excited about all the possibilities and the author explains any fears you may have and how you can get over them and overall she gets the word across to never give up!She also gives e-mail adresses from other people who have experience travel.This is a great book, everyone can benefit from this.

Excellent Book!
The Global Citizen is an excellent book for anyone thinking of doing anything abroad! It covers a wide range of topics, from studying to volunteering abroad. The author provides practical information on how to identify your goal, approach it and then directs the reader on where to find more information on each individual topic. Required Reading (Kind of)
This is not a general interest book. Career Diplomacy is, however, a MUST READ for anyone considering a career in diplomacy or already in the midst of the application process. Most readers with a cursory interest in diplomacy or statecraft are better served with more journalistic fare. Those already working for the State Department or other Federal agencies with employees abroad don't need this book because they have lived experiences. But if you are a potential or actual job applicant and really want to know the nuts and bolts of a job in Foreign Service this book is essential. Very helpful introduction
This book provides a well-rounded and in-depth introduction to the U.S. Foreign Service. I understand much better now the purpose and history of the service. I appreciate the author's honest look at the service - covering good and bad points.

The best guide to the foreign service ever
This is a great snapshot in to the world of foreign service with interviews, history and troubleshooting for the determined foreign office. I came across this book as a study aid for the foreign service.It does contain a detailed history of the foreign service, but it is more valuable as a job description and personal account.

Good overview
This is a good book for anyone who is interested in how the foreign service works.As with all other books I have come accross on this topic there are a lot of generalizations, and it seems to be written under the nose of "big brother" if you will.I think this is an absolute must read for anyone considering a career in the Foreign Service, but do not expect it to answer all your questions.For instance there is no further insight into assignments or career progression than is available free of charge on the State Dept. web site.There is however a little more descript explaination about the different career tracks.While I am still looking for a book that gives a little better "behind the scenes" look I definitely think this was a great buy.

The view it provides is fair, not portraying the foreign service as the greatest institution ever formed but showing the advantages and disadvantages of the organization.
