1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and outdated
Reading the favorable reviews, I thought this book would be a no-brainer and get me up to speed with the world of sports marketing. Well, it might have in 1999, when the 3rd and last edition was published. For that reason, none of the developments in the past 10 years have been taken into account, most specifically the Internet and how it changed the sports marketing world. In addition, the book is 100% focused on US Sports, but that in every flavor and variation. Care about the biggest sport and sports revenue producer on this planet, soccer? Non-existent in the book. Want to know how event like Olympic games and FIFA World Cup are marketed and organized? Not covered in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars more than practical book
I got a very good view of many topics related to sports marketing. I would say that Melvin Helitzer gives us a great overview of what a professional needs to know to perform well in the field. It's really great tour to get acquainted with the dream job. The sports world industry deserves professionals to market, communicate and advertise with the flavor Helitzer gives to us readers.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent read
Tis book is applicable inside the classroom and out.I first read it for a business class and then later when I got my first job in public realtions. It really helped me understand and familiarize myself with sports PR and PR in general. If you read only one book about public relations I'd recommend you read Guerrilla PR Wired by Michael Levine, but if you can read two I'd read The Dream Job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up to date
Looking for a new job, I was recommended to this book. Maybe it was a coincidence, but within two weeks of reading the book and following some its sports marketing techniques, I landed a job with a major college sports department.Call me lucky, or smart that I found this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of ten best Business Books in 2000
"The Dream Job" is not only a best seller in the United States,it has also been reviewed as "one of the ten best business books in2000" by Kauppalhti, the largest business daily in Nordic countries. The critique, read avidly by thousands of readers, called the book"fantastic." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guy
I took a class at Art Center with Ken. Basics of Interplanetary Flight. He is an amazing, humble guy. Had his own observatory. I found out he wrote a book through the teacher. The book is great. Very uplifting and very helpful. He is such an honest, all around nice guy so I would way more listen to him than some big smiley agro EST guy.

4-0 out of 5 stars how to promote yourself or your business
The best thing about Kragen's book is that he gives lots of real life examples of how he promoted people like Kenny Rogers and Trisha Yearwood, and how he created the campaigns for We are the World and Hands Across America. His enthusiasm for his subject makes it an enjoyable read. The format (presenting 10 basic career strategies) makes it easy to read.
The only thing that's a very slight negative about this book is that although he keeps saying that anyone can adapt his principles to their own life, the reader can't help thinking: well, if they have lots of money they can.All of his campaign examples involve very wealthy people with lots of cash to throw into promotion.
Still, I would recommend this book for the marketing strategies he itemizes, and for his enthusiasm for and experience in his area of expertise.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the producer of We Are The World
and Hands Across America comes a remarkable book. Life is indeed a contact sport, and Kragen shows anyone willing to follow the program how to make contact. Inspired by some housepainters in Des Moines who took him at hisword when he said the same techniques that worked for Kenny Rogers wouldwork for them, the secrets for surmounting seemingly impossible obstaclesto success are laid out here in plain sight, plain language, ready foranyone who is ready to learn to succeed without massive change. I wasfortunate enough to be invited to audit a class at UCLA where Kragenoccasionally teaches this material, and to say it changed my life is anunderstatement. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sports Nuts
The book Careers for Sports Nuts and Other Athletic Types by Ray Heitzmann is a great informational book. The book tells about occupations in the athletic department. For example the book describes jobs like physical therapy, coaching, sports communication and much more. This book is more for high school students who want to go into athletics for an occupation. I believe this book is a great book. I choose this book because I want to go into athletics; this book helped me narrow my choices.

The book Careers for Sports Nuts and Other Athletic Types reminds me of the lawyers in Inherit the Wind. In Inherit the Wind the lawyers are very successful. For example one of t he charters ran for president three times. I also recommend reading Inherit the Wind.

Product Description
Not everyone can be a rock star, movie star, or TV personality, but that doesn't mean that you can't bask in at least a little limelight. There's just as much going on behind the scenes as in front of the cameras and mikes: acquisitions, legal affairs, production, publicity, talent, marketing—these are just a few of the job areas in which you can make your mark in the entertainment industry. And there are jobs aplenty, though you'll find a lot of competition for them. The reason: entertainment is one of the last fields in which the little guy—or doll—can start at the bottom and claw to the top with hard work, resourcefulness, and a little bit of luck. At least, that's the view of itself that Hollywood projects. Want the inside scoop? Check out Careers in Entertainment: The WetFeet Insider Guide. Off the record, on the QT, and very hush-hush.

This Insider Guide will tell you everything you want to know about entertainment--and how you can get a job in the industry. Specifically, you'll learn things like:

  • Who the players are and what they do
  • What vertical integration is and how it can make you happy or miserable
  • Where you should live--New York or LA--and why living anywhere else is a handicap
  • What the entertainment buzzwords are, and how to use them like the insiders do
  • What the culture is like and why it varies based on where and who you are in the industry
  • How much you can earn
  • How to manage your career
  • How the recruiting process works and what to do to get ready for your interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars just starting out
if you're a person who's just starting out (24 years old) and really interested in breaking into the entertainment industry (on the biz side of things), then this guide is something you'll want to pick up. my college advisor suggested i look into it, and i did. i've since moved to LA and looked up all of the alums connected to the industry and now have an internship at a big music label. this guide gave me the big picture, got me in the right frame of mind to figure out whether it was movies or music that i wanted to focus on (since i love both on a personal level!) ... i'm still open to moving into film, but for now, i'm happy where i am. thanks to wetfeet for getting me grounded and off to a good start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice General Overview
This guide was helpful in getting a general picture of what behing-the-scenes careers can be had in entertainment. It covers television, music, and the movie industry, so it was really helpful in my decision as to just where in the entertainment industry I want to be. Note that this is not a guide for breaking into the industry as a performer. But for those of you who think you might want to run the show instead, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the starstruck!
I've had a couple of showbiz internships but no steady job. This book to helped me get get the big picture on the Biz and refine my career goals. I feel my big break is a lot closer now. Very highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for those who know NOTHING in Entertainment Jobs
For those who are just entering the industry, I recommend this book.I have been in the industry for approx. 2 years now.I didn't learn anything I didn't already know, except maybe the salaries of various job titles. New to the Industry? Buy it!Been in the Industry for a while?Nevermind! ... Read more

Product Description

Few realize that some sports were integrated, or even dominated by blacks, before becoming dominated by whites, for example, horse racing, golf, hockey, and tennis. This book provides a lens through which to view the historical context and specific circumstances of African Americans' presence in various sports. The author asks why sport has at times challenged the status quo with regard to race and civil rights, and at other times reinforced it. To that end, he analyzes various sports and asks why and when has each sport responded differently.

Wigginton asks how did blacks break the color barrier? Were they able to maintain representation in the particular sport? And did the entrance of blacks in these sports change the public's perception of the sport? The answers to these questions shed light on why America remains preoccupied with sports, race, and the seemingly integral relationship between the two.
