Product Description
Biological and medical research relies upon an integrated understanding of the molecules within cells and of the interactions between cells. This has imposed great demands on investigators.Being an expert in a relatively narrow area is no longer sufficient as many studies now require the use of a wide range of techniques to provide the necessary integration.A lack of familiarity with the experimental possibilities can make such diversification difficult to achieve. This two volume set of Essential Cell Biology is designed to help researchers overcome these problems. It has not been possible to include all of the techniques available in cell biology so the challenge was to identify those that might be most relevant to researchers who are new to this topic. We have tried to cover both traditional and more recent approaches. The theory and basic principles of each technique are described, together with detailed protocols and advice for trouble shooting.Directions to more specialised techniques are also included. We hope the result inspires readers to experience the challenges and rewards of cell biology research for themselves and to contribute to the ongoing task of understanding the life of the cell. Essential Cell Biology volume 2 concentrates on understanding how the cell functions whilst Volume 1 focuses on techniques for studying cell structure. Volume 2 details the essential background information and protocols for investigating cell cell function, including, for example, investigations of cellular transport, receptors and gene expression. This is the essential guide to cell biology for researchers new to the field. ... Read more

Product Description
In Silico introduces Maya programming into one of the most fascinating application areas of 3D graphics: biological visualization. In five building-block tutorials, this book prepares animators to work with visualization problems in cell biology. The book assumes no deep knowledge of cell biology nor 3D graphics programming. An accompanying DVD-ROM includes code derived from the tutorials, the working Maya computer files, and sample animated movies. The interior of the book contains generous Maya screen captures, tables, and flowcharts to compliment the instruction and tutorials. Full 4 color illustrations rendered from the authors' working files illustrate the capacity to produce striking pictures from the rendered models being created. Throughout the text, key words are set in bold type and subsequently defined in a glossary. Page margin tips and tricks compliment the adjacent copy, and icons direct the reader to specific references within the Maya Help library. The visualizations in the book are stunning examples of the state of the art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
Firstly, let's talk about the structure of the book. This book is broken into three sections:

PART 1 is an introduction to the evolution of computing and how CG has been used for medical simulations and scientific visualizations. It contains three chapters that discuss how hardware and software are progressing over the years in respect of technology. So, this first part of the book is a bit overwhelming on theory. Those who are familiar with CG concepts and terms might see interesting to skip this part.

PART 2 is a Maya crash course. Well, not so "crash" if you consider this is a ten chapters walk. It goes from Maya Interface through Dynamics ending up with two great MEL scripting chapters. Maya users may want to skip this part. However, I consider the two chapters on MEL scripting valuable even for those who are already Maya/MEL users.

PART 3 is the heart of the book. However, it is a rock-solid one. This part contains five project-based chapters. If you are an experienced Maya and MEL user, so you are at one of the most interesting playgrounds you could be. If you are not experienced with Maya/MEL, I suggest you to go back to PART 2 and consider reading it. These five projects/tutorials will make you dive deep into the world of MEL scripting. And believe me: it's rewarding.

This is not a book for the casual 3D modeler and animator. This one is for those really interested in how Maya and MEL can be used to generate 3D animations and simulations for the biology and medical fields. Almost every picture inside this book is related with biomedical applications.

Those looking for learning Maya, this book really brings a pretty descent foundation course on this software. Those looking for learning MEL, this book is a must buy. Just please keep in mind that every example and exercise is targeted to cell biology and its related fields.

Best regards,
Chris.

3-0 out of 5 stars this book will get you thinking
Overall I think this book is a decent addition to anyone looking at science visualization if you have a good knowledge of Maya already.
The book is broken into two sections. The first half of the book is really just an intro to maya. If you need this info, then the second half will completely blow you out of the water. I found the second half to be fairly engaging- it is really an exercise in MEL scripting - and a good one.
I think the book could give a more general overview of sci-viz, and not get into specifics so much.
This book is not for the casual Maya user. ... Read more

Product Description
Recent advances in the imaging technique electron microscopy (EM) have improved the method, making it more reliable and rewarding, particularly in its description of three-dimensional detail. This book will help biologists from many disciplines understand modern EM and the value it might bring to their own work. The book's five sections deal with all major issues in EM of cells: specimen preparation, imaging in 3-D, imaging and understanding frozen-hydrated samples, labeling macromolecules, and analyzing EM data. Each chapter was written by scientists who are among the best in their field, and some chapters provide multiple points of view on the issues they discuss. Each section of the book is preceded by an introduction, which should help newcomers understand the subject. The book shows why many biologists believe that modern EM will forge the link between light microscopy of live cells and atomic resolution studies of isolated macromolecules, helping us toward the goal of an atomic resolution understanding of living systems.

* Updates the numerous technological innovations that have improved the capabilities of electron microscopy
* Provides timely coverage of the subject given the significant rise in the number of biologists using light microscopy to answer their questions and the natural limitations of this kind of imaging
* Chapters include a balance of "how to", "so what" and "where next", providing the reader with both practical information, which is necessary to use these methods, and a sense of where the field is going ... Read more

Product Description

The book was adapted from graduate courses on signal transduction taught by the editor, where the need for a good overview of recent developments became apparent. Given the wide range of research topics in signaling, a selection was made that not only reflects the current research interest, but also anticipates those areas that will continue to be of interest over the next several years.

The health-relatedness of research was a major criterion for selection, as can be seen in the list of topics covered, such as G protein coupled receptors, growth factors, nuclear receptors, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, the cell cycle and cancer. The emphasis is on areas of signaling research with direct clinical significance. Another field covered, one rarely highlighted in signal transduction books, is that of signaling platforms, which has been emerging as a significant research area relevant to cellular metabolism, cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer.

Product Description

The Machinery of Life is a journey into the sub-microscopic world of molecular machines. Readers are introduced to the types of molecules built by cells, including proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and polysaccharides; then, in a series of full-color "watercolor" illustrations, which show a portion of a living cell magnified by 1,000,000 times, the reader is guided through the interior world of cells. The book explores the ways in which molecules work in concert to perform the processes of living, and how vitamins, viruses, poisons, and drugs each have their effects on the molecules in our bodies. The book is a fascinating introduction to biochemistry for the non-specialist, and combines a lucid text with an abundance of drawings and computer graphics that present the world of cells and their components in a truly unique way.

This new edition has been updated to include the many major advances of the past decade, and is richly illustrated in full color throughout.

Amazon.com Review
The cell is the basic unit of life, but most of us have atbest a fuzzy, low-power idea of how cells are put together and whatthey look like. "The microscopic world of molecules is separatedfrom our everyday world by an insurmountable, million-fold differencein size," says David Goodsell. "I created the illustrationsin this book to help bridge this gulf and allow us to look at themolecular structure of cells, if not directly, then in an artisticrendition." Goodsell has succeeded remarkably. His pictures, mostly line drawings, show the structures of crucial biochemicals andthe boggling intricacy of their arrangement in living cells. "Afew minutes' study may be needed to overcome the feeling ofclaustrophobia," said Nature, "but will reward thereader with a lasting impression of the density and complexity of thissoup of life." --Mary Ellen Curtin ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Molecular Machines
I am a current student at Wake Forest University, and this was the textbook used in my First Year Seminar Class. This book is basically an overview of every little part in the cell. It will show you all of different machines, but it does lack in going in to depth of each.I do not think Goodsell wrote this book with the intention of doing that. I think that he is just giving an insight in to the cell so that we can dig deeper in our own research.Overall, this is a great book for introductory cell biology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Molecular Machines
This was a book used for a First Year Seminar class at Wake Forest University. At first I was skeptical about having it as our textbook and the ability for us to be able to understand and learn from it but I was quickly proven wrong. It is very easy to read and the info it provides about the cells molecular machines in our body as well in other organisms is precise and straight to the point. This made it perfect for the class and it seemed like everyone enjoyed it. When I sat down to read it, it went by pretty fast. The coolest thing about this book was the pictures. The animated and colorful pictures really add to the experience and really show you what the machines look like while adding depth to the book. Overall, this was a really great book that I would recommend to anyone interested in learning about the how the machines deep within the cell work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool, good read
After reading David Goodsell's book for a college level class, I was extremely impressed with the impression it left on me. The book is in no way like a textbook, as the language is fluid and understandable, while managing to remain academic throughout. The fact that this book was so easy to read made learning from the book come naturally, and I was engaged and interested from start to finish. The structure of the book iss excellent, as it moves from specific and basic topics to bigger and more complex issues of the body, as Goodsell is effectively able to build on what he has taught in previous chapters and use it to enhance understanding of more complex topics later on. I found the illustrations and diagrams in the book to be well placed and helpful to the reader, as opposed to cumbersome or irrelevant. They helped to simplify concepts that were hard to put into words, and allowed for understanding on multiple levels (both visually and verbally). As a whole, I can say that I was very pleased with Goodsell's book, and will definitely check out his other works in the near future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helped me understand
If you're a visual learner like I am, seeing the beautifully drawn images of the molecules is the only way to understand what's going on. After reading this I have a much better grasp of how the molecules of the body actually interact.

Product Description
The Dictyostelia are soil amoebae capable of extraordinary feats of survival, motility, chemotaxis, and development. Known as the "social amoebae," these organisms have been the subjects of serious study since the 1930s. Research in this area has been instrumental in shaping general views of differentiation, morphogenesis, and communication. Beginning with the history of Dictyostelids, this book considers the problems of the evolution of this multicellular organism. Characterized by its ability to transform from a single-celled organism into an elaborate assemblage of thousands of synchronously-moving cells, each stage of its development is treated in a separate chapter. The special properties of the Dictyostelid genome are rigorously analyzed, and the methods available to manipulate genes are presented in detail. Research techniques that enable many cell biology problems to be approached in studying the organism are also presented. Throughout, the emphasis is on combining classical experiments with modern molecular findings. ... Read more

Product Description
Since the word microscopy was coined in 1656, the evolution of the instrument has had a long and convoluted history. Plagued with problems of chromatic aberration, spherical aberration, and challenges with illumination and resolution, the microscope’s technical progression happened in a series of fits and starts until the late 19th century. After Ernst Abbe perfected the “how” of lens design, achieving the theoretical limit imposed by wavelength, there came a revolution in subject matter or “what” could be studied by microscope.
Covering the entire field of microscopy, Optical Imaging Techniques in Cell Biology provides an overview of the technical evolution of the microscope and explains how the basics of optical microscopy led to the most advanced techniques employed today. The author addresses a vast array of topics including optical contrasting techniques, fluorescence, confocal versus widefield microscopes, lasers as a light source, and digital imaging, as well as the correction of aberrations that might arise. Building on this foundation, he then examines more advanced techniques such as quantitative fluorescence, fluorescence resonant energy, three-dimensional imaging, high-speed confocal microscopy, non-linear microscopy, and stimulated emission depletion.
Delivering a truly comprehensive work encompassing the scope and breadth of the field, the author brings a new level of understanding to the student, technician, researcher, or investigator working in the fascinating realm of optical microscopy. ... Read more
