Product Description
With the raw emotion of The Diary of Anne Frank, Mona Golabek's powerful memoir is a poignant story of tragedy and triumph in a time of war.Famed concert pianist Mona Golabek shares the inspirational true story of her mother's escape from pre-World War II Vienna to an orphanage in London--243 Willesden Lane. "The music will give you strength...it will be your best friend in life." With these words--the last she would ever hear from her mother--ringing in her ears, young piano prodigy Lisa Jura boarded the Kindertransport and headed for safety. Amidst the dozens of Jewish refugees trying to make their way in war-torn London, Lisa forms indelible friendships, finds romance, and, against all odds, wins a scholarship to study piano at the Royal Academy of London. This is a stunning testament to the power of music to lift the human spirit and to grant the soul endurance, patience, and peace. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!
I had to read this book as an assignment in my Junior english class. This book really draws you in how the author describes the life of her mother as a young, Jewish girl. There are some expecting sad parts, such as when Kristallnacht, but the story has a pretty happy ending. It really is a great book.
The author, Mona Golabek, actually came to my high school after we finished reading the book and talked about it and played the piano. I thought it was soo neat. =]

5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing historical story
"The Children of Willesden Lane" is the non-fiction account of one girl's remarkable story during World War II.Lisa Jura is a talented, 14-year-old Jewish girl living in Vienna. She is an eye witness to the changes in her beloved city that are brought by the occupation of the Nazis. One day she is happily going across town to take piano lessons from her teacher and the next, she is confronted with Jewish men being taken away for simply being on the street or being beaten and she witnesses the vandalism of Jewish-owned businesses. Her life is turned upside down by the political change and the effects of the Nazi policies toward the Jewish population. Her parents are astute (and lucky enough) to secure one spot on the Kindertransport (moving 10,000 Jewish children) to London and they make the choice to send Lisa. The remainder of the book tells the tale of her life in England and the epilogue reveals what happened to her in later years.

This should be required reading for anyone studying WWII history and is appropriate for all ages from preteens to adults.Simply written, the story is absolutely compelling and the narrative is clear and engrossing.Once you begin reading, you won't want to stop.As a chronicle of history, it sets on paper a story few people know.As a story of one incredible girl/woman, it humanizes that history and makes it personal.Much like "The Diary of Anne Frank", this book touches the reader in ways that cold, hard facts just can't.I would encourage anyone interested in this time in history to pick this up and it needs to take its rightful place on the shelves of classrooms all across the country.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best
The Children of Willesden Lane is the best book that I have ever read that describes some of the experiences that musicians encountered during this horrible time in history. I have read several books and watched many videos on this subject and I highly recommend all of them. Some of these wonderful books and videos are Night (Oprah's Book Club),Anne Frank - The Diary of a Young Girl, The Inextinguishable Symphony, Alma Rose: Vienna to Auschwitz, Playing for Time,Bach in Auschwitz [VHS] Schindler's List: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack,Schindler's List All of these books and videos are wonderful but The Children of Willesden Lane was able to convey an exceptional description of day to day living during this difficult time during World War 2. The story is very captivating. The reader is able to connect with all of the characters in a personal way. It is also exciting to know that this book is being used to teach students in schools about the holocaust. Check out the web site at http://www.learner.org/series/cowl/theauthor/index.html This is a wonderful resource for any teacher who wants to use this book in the classroom. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in this subject. In my opinion, it is the best of the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Memoir of Music, Love, and Survival
I was unfamiliar with the Kindertransport that moved 10,000 Jewish children to safety from the Holocaust. This biography brings that event to life through the memories of Lisa Jura.At 14, her parents sent her to London and the book covers that wrenching journey and the next six years of her life.Growing up during the blitz in a refugee home with 31 children makes a fascinating book.
Lisa's devotion to music weaves the story together as she strives towards her parents' dream.Becoming a concert pianist seems unachievable under the circumstances, but this touching biography details Lisa's progress towards that goal. This account has appeal for both adult and teen readers.
I also recommend In The Shadow Of The Cathedral: Growing Up In Holland During WW II by Titia Bozuwa

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Music
author of Cooking Jewish: 532 Great Recipes from the Rabinowitz Family

from the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles
August 30, 2002

Vienna, 1938. In the city of Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven and Strauss, 14-year-old musical prodigy Lisa Jura looks forward to a promising career as a concert pianist. Hitler has other plans. With the breaking of glass on Kristallnacht, Jura's dreams are shattered.

Internationally celebrated concert pianist Mona Golabek, with journalist and poet Lee Cohen, has crafted a loving, lyrical tribute to her mother, Lisa Jura, in "The Children of Willesden Lane: Beyond the Kindertransport: A Memoir of Music, Love, and Survival."

Jura was one of 10,000 Jewish children saved from the Nazis by the British and sent on the Kindertransport to safety from Eastern Europe. Already being compared to "The Diary of Anne Frank," this simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting tale weaves together the stories that Golabek's mother told her about prewar Austria; the gut-wrenching separation from her family; life at the orphanage on Willesden Lane; and the power of music to help her survive.

As Jura's mother, Malka, puts her on the train, she says the prophetic words that will sustain and inspire her daughter and future generations: "Hold on to your music. Let it be your best friend."

In a world turned ugly, the beauty of music becomes Jura's strength, and, against tremendous odds, with the help and encouragement of the 30 other displaced children at the orphanage, she wins a scholarship to London's Royal Academy.

"Each kid saw something in my mother's music that reminded them of what they had left behind in Czechoslovakia, in Austria, in Germany," says Golabek, a Grammy-nominated artist, "and that's what I tried to do in the story, not only to pay homage to my mother, but to all these kids and to their bravery."

The book opens with Jura's tantalizing daydream of performing in a great concert hall and closes with the fulfillment of that dream, as she makes her debut before an exhilarated crowd. And in between, the pages burst with melody: Jura pounding the cadenza of the Grieg "Piano Concerto" to drown out the sounds of bombs during London's blitz, Jura visualizing Chopin fleeing a flaming Warsaw as she struggles with the somber coda of the "Ballade," Jura remembering her mother's Sabbath candles as she plays the solemn opening of Beethoven's "Pathetique."

"My mom and her mother never cared if a piece is in C major. What really counts is the passion behind it, the image. If it's `Clair de Lune,' imagine the moon over a desert island. That imagination allowed her to survive the horrors of what she experienced, because a C-major chord will not inspire you through the horrors. It's the moonlight, the idea that maybe the composer wrote it for someone he loved. These things inflamed her imagination, and that's how she inflamed mine."

And now Golabek's book will inflame the imagination of a whole new generation. The Milken Family Foundation, together with Facing History and Ourselves, an educational organization that teaches tolerance to 1 million students annually, are working with Golabek to bring the story to schools across the country by developing a companion curriculum guide.

Plans are under way to launch the book in Austria, and make it available to teachers as part of the now mandatory four-year Holocaust education program for students.

The saga of Golabek's 18-year struggle to get the story published is almost as harrowing as her mother's story itself. "It went through many, many writings; many, many ups and downs, starts and disappointments," Golabek says.

Now the accolades and offers are pouring in. On Sept. 24, she will be an honored guest speaker at the California Governor's Conference for Women at the Long Beach Convention Center and will appear at Beth Am on Nov. 17 with her sister, pianist Renee Golabek-Kaye, and Jura's four grandchildren, all musicians: Michele, 16; Sarah, 14; Jonathan, 8; and Rachel, 7. Brandeis University will honor her at the Skirball Cultural Center next March 31.

Last week Golabek was interviewed on NPR's Morning Edition and was the subject of a feature story by Andy Meisler of the New York Times. In the planning stages is a concert next year co-sponsored by the U.S. Holocaust Museum and the Austrian government. And, of course, Golabek is considering movie offers.

On her syndicated radio show, "The Romantic Hours," which highlights stirring writings against a musical backdrop (Saturdays at 10 p.m., 105.1 FM), Golabek often quotes the poet Jean Paul Richter: "Life fades and withers behind us, but of our immortal and sacred soul all that remains is music."

"That was a quote my mother taught me, and the whole reason why I wrote this book and why I created `The Romantic Hours' was that my mother felt through words and through music our souls would be immortalized." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Students love 'em
This is a great little booklet of stickers that go with the Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano books. I have a little 3-year-old student who just LOVES these! There are almost 500 stickers in the booklet, about half are small circles (perfect for putting on charts and things) and the other half are bigger. Very cute! Great little motivator for young students.

3-0 out of 5 stars Themed Rewards
If your child is using the Little Mozart series (or you are an instructor teaching it), these stickers are themed, positive reinforcement.

These are eight sheets of 495 stickers. Of the 495 stickers, 300 are small circles, 1/2" wide. These would be suitable for marking completed pages in lesson books. The remaining 195 stickers are divided into two sets. The first set has Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse, along with other cartoon characters such as a ballerina, an elephant and a cat accented with encouraging words like "You're A Star" and "Well Done." The second set is similar with Beethoven Bear, Mozart Mouse and more cartoon friends. Each of these stickers is about 1" in size and each set is repeated over three pages.

This is a nice addition to a gift for your musical child using the Little Mozarts method, or for their teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars The kid likes it and so do I
A few months ago I splurged on the whole "Music for Little Mozarts" package. This comes with a music lesson book, a workbook (coloring, drawing, etc.), a CD, flashcards, another "music discovery" book with another CD (these are pretty worthless as far as I can tell), two stuffed animals ("Mozart Mouse" and "Beethoven Bear," who feature in all the materials), and a magnetic/dry-erase musical notation board with magnetic notes.I also got the teacher's guide, but I don't think this helps much, unless you're a music teacher perhaps.

By the way, we tried another music package--it wasn't very good. This, by contrast, is professional and well-thought-out in practically every way.

This is a very basic, from-absolute-ground-zero package.I appreciate the very gradual pace, which begins with low and high sounds, then talks about loud and soft, then the groups of two and three black keys. Then you start playing two black keys together, then three, then you start going up and down the black keys...Anyway, it's very gradual.

The CD recording of the main lesson book helps a lot.It basically contains the entire text and tunes from the lesson book, and is written in a sort of "story" form--my little boy (almost 4 now) bought it anyway. We've listened to the CD many times (all at the kid's request), so now the tunes (if you want to call them that--they are as basic as you can imagine) are totally ingrained. So he really got into it.He sleeps with Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear (you might not think the stuffed animals are necessary, but they really help).

As to lessons, well, I take this approach: if he says "no," then we absolutely don't do it, and probably not the next day either. If we take breaks of a week or even a couple weeks, that's absolutely OK.On the other hand, if he seems enthusiastic, we kick things up a notch, and we have lessons daily or even, rarely, a few times in a day.We received the package around March 15 and were at it nearly daily for a couple weeks. Then there were a couple weeks in which we did only 3-4 lessons total.Since then we've been practicing fairly regularly, not a lesson every day but 2-5 per week.

Results: we've gone through half of the first book and have ordered the second. He can actually play the little tunes in the book, and when he successfully pulls one off, and I say, "Yay!" then he claps and says "Yay!" very excitedly himself. He's very proud of himself. He's getting better at putting the fingers where they belong, and also he can play different notes with different fingers.

I've also been teaching him "Chopsticks" which is his favorite thing to play.Today he almost got it right.I just had to prompt him once.

He loves the flashcards. We've gone through them many times by now and he likes to do all 32, or whatever it is, in one shot. This takes time because many of the cards involve clapping rhythms written on the cards. He can't do this yet just by looking at the notes--he has to look at the back of the card to read the numbers written under the notes--but he's very good at the actual clapping part, which I guess is the important part for now.He does know a lot of the signs inside and out anyway, in no small part because of the powerpoint & LR flashcards we'd done before.

Anyway, so far we can recommend "Little Mozarts."

BTW, I had 8 years of piano lessons as a kid myself, and once upon a time, for a short time, earned a living teaching violin. So I have experience with this sort of thing--your experience may be different, and if you haven't got a clue about where to start or what to do, you might want to hire a teacher (or not!).We are currently playing on an electronic keyboard (which he loves to explore and make noise with).

5-0 out of 5 stars Music for little Mozart's deluxe kit is the best money you can spend on your child!
This is a fantastic product.I am a music teacher and have used some of the material in the kit, especially the books before. The CD was new to me and is excellent!

The kit is very well priced for so many items, bought separately from my local music shop the cost would have been double.

I would urge every parent of a child aged 4-6 who would like to learn piano to consult the teacher about using this. It is money very well spent.

Amazon.com Review
You've probably heard all the fuss about how classical music can aid achild's developmental growth. Now here's a book that actually puts theeducational research into practice, by showing how classical music canbecome a continual part of your child's learning experiences. GoodMusic, Brighter Children skates over the more controversial researchand suggests easy methods to increase musical experiences. Mainly throughstatistics and anecdotes, the author gives a multitude of reasons whyclassical music can help brain development and achievement levels in nearly every field of study. More importantly, the book supplies numerous ways of creating interestin music beyond costly lessons and concerts. Children can learn the stories behind operas, for example, or study thehistory of instruments and the emotional content of the music. The author,Sharlene Habermeyer, includes activities designed to fully involve thestudents. You'll find yourselfactually making reproductions of instruments, reading books detailingthe lives of composers, and maybe even writing a libretto or two!For parents new to the realm of classical music, there's an enormousresource list of classical pieces broken down by age appropriateness, composer, and subject matter. The author encourages families to financiallysupporttheir local classical musicians, and she offers plenty of tips forencouraging the governmental support through grassroots letterwriting. Her suggestions could actually lead to a great civics projectfor homeschoolers. While not likely to win over skeptics, this is anexcellent practicalmanual for incorporating classical music into everyday family life. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

I purchased this book when my daughter was a baby.I enjoyed reading it word for word my first time through and have referred to it many times since.Although music has always been enjoyed by us, this book elevated music education in importance for my family. We became involved in wonderful music programs as a result.I am grateful to the author. Her book has greatly enriched our lives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Special Needs...
I was kind of surprised other people liked this book so much.I didn't find it useful at all.I especially don't recommend it if you are looking for any ideas to help with a special needs child. It doesn't even touch on that. There are a lot of suggestions about things you can do with your children to increase their music appreciation. The author suggests taking your child to the symphony or the opera, but dress them in comfortable clothes... Just not too helpful at all. It also has lots of lists making recommendations as to music your kids can listen to. I took a one-day class on music and child development last year and there is so much good information that this author doesn't include. If you're looking for a good book on this subject, look into Don Campbell's book on the Mozart Effect for kids.I wish I hadn't bought this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to build or enhance a Digital Home Virtual Studio!
Excellent book for novice or veteran musician(s), composers, music industry promoters, and 'fringe' careers like, audio/video engineering, or productions.

The book contains technical details for all audio interest (PC based studios, etc. but that's not it's forte.). It's more of a study of the roles of various PC & MAC based recording technology within the music industry.e.g.Types of computers (Laptops, Towers, etc) and their roles, What are trends for current and future VST (Virtual Studio Technology). It gives great examples of REAL products (and their pros/cons, from a neutral viewpoint.) allowing you to think of what fits your goals!

He writes of audio technology used all over the globe by artists/producers/A&R people and "how they do it?".

I am a retired Systems Engineer & former recording & T.V. artist from the 60's and- I am impressed with Zack's knowledge of this stuff! The book is great, and easier to read than my review here.

Buy it, don't borrow it, own a copy! If you are seeking to earn or make 'in-roads' in audio recording- even if you do NOT anticipate using PC based studio, the information contained here is an excellent 'fertile ground' for growing/transplanting your audio-recording studio and even some techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Computer Based Music Production - Beginner
I knew absolutely nothing about computer based production or stereo equipment.I found this book to be an excellent guide in understanding the equipment and most important the set up. Many beginner guides are too basic. After reviewing a dozen books on the subject, this is one that I found was money well spent. It gave basics, and kept the reader's intellect in mind. ... Product Description
This book is the second in a series that examines the impact of different forms of visual impairment on the developing musicality of blind and partially-sighted children and young people.

The research is based on the observations of visually impaired children and young people by their parents, teachers and therapists and by the authors themselves. A key question is how the participants’ level of vision, the age of onset of their visual impairment, and the neurological consequences of their medical condition impact on their evolving musicality. It is hoped that the evidence in this study will help provide a secure foundation for further music education and sociological, psychological and neurological investigation. Moreover, it is anticipated that as we gain a deeper knowledge of how musicality evolves among an exceptional group of young people, our understanding of how musical abilities and propensities develop in all of us will be enhanced. ...
