Great help!
I have had two horse, both with constant chiropractic needs!
This book taught me many things I needed to know to help my horse along myself. I would recommend it to anyone with a horse to better understand the physical needs of their animal, along with the support of a good equine chiropractor and a massage therapist. Horses have back problems too!

My horse loves it!
Disclaimer: I do know a few things about horses...
However after a significant injury to my beloved equine he went lame. This book helped me put him back on his game and hitting the trail.

If you ride a lot and I mean lots! You need your horse to stay in the best alignment possible.

Adjustments help big time
My mare after foaling was out of allignment and draging her right rear leg, The vet checked her and said nothing he could do for her, hopefully she will get herself back in. I tried all the horse chiropractors I could find and none could be reached so I got this book and it has helped so much that the mare is feeling tons better and back out on pasture till her next adjustment.This book explained how to check for the proper allignment on the horse and what to feel for. VERY HELPFUL !!

The Well Adjusted Horse
The Well Adjusted Horse: Equine Chiropractic Methods You Can Do
Very disappointed; dont buy it. It is only 5" x 7" so the pages are very small and you have to flip lots of them to get any thing read. The first 170 are general stuff and there is only 100 pages of instrution. While this sounds like a lot the pages are so small they only contain one paragraph. Diagrams are poor and not clear what is intended. If you want a book that provides basic adjustments for your horse DONT BUY THIS ONE.

Great book & subject, but with cautionary note
As background to this book review, I have recently taken a class in equine chiropractic from one of Dr. Kamen's friends, Dr. Bill Hampton (see www.EquineSpine.com) who is a retired human chiropractor and previously taught at Palmer College of Chiropractic (www.Palmer.edu).Dr. H. does all the work on Pat Parelli's animals (www.Parelli.com) as well as many other 6-figure horses.(Unfortunately Dr. Kamen no longer teaches these classes on a regular basis.)Dr. Hampton's two day class applies the Gonstead technique & philosophy (www.Gonstead.com) to horses and that course material is paralleled almost exactly in this book.The class comes with two other lab books by Dr. K. (neither are as good as "The Well Adjusted Horse") as well as DVD videos showing the chiropractic techniques and equine anatomy, plus a Parelli DVD.This book does NOT come with the class.

While I disagree with the reviewer who was aghast at this book (mainly the idea of adjusting your own horse) and rated it a 1 (based on their review I doubt they have bought it & read it!), I would agree with them in that you should not just skim over this book and go try it.It is well worth every penny of the $450 for the class, performing each technique on your own horse under an expert's tutelage.I read this book before taking the class and practiced some of the set-ups, but I did not actually adjust a horse until the class.Equine chiropractors in my area tend to use the long-lever technique which can be quite brutal.I had the atlas (C1) of two horses adjusted by a local vet, and he first doped the horse, twitched the lip, used the twitch to leverage the chin over the withers, and impulsed using the twitched lip!It cost $100 per horse for a licensed vet to bloody the lips of my animals like that (although it did fix the subluxation).Beside the fact that with my 5 horses this class will pay for itself in a week, this book and that class teach a much gentler, humane and drug-free method of restoring skeletal and neuro-muscular balance to a horse.

This review really is about this excellent book, not the parallel class, but I believe it's wisest to practice what's in the book after taking the class.Anyone simply interested in learning about equine chiropractic, from human chiropractor to veterinarian to equine masseur/acupuncturist to horse owner, should buy this book and read it!(And yes, Dr. K has corny humor as one reviewer complained - most of it actually is at least marginally funny, but I'll let you read about the pregnant dog yourself).If you want to learn the skills of equine chiropractic, definitely buy this book, but also definitely take the course from Dr. Hampton (www.EquineSpine.com).And tell Bill that Kevyn from Magnolia sent you!

Worthy warm gift
My son-in-law, the chiropractor had a birthday coming and this was his choice for a gift.Unfortunately, it wasn't available as a new product but I managed to locate some of the used copies for sale.Dr. son-in-law was happy to receive the book and thanked me for sending it.

A great, priceless book for chiropractic students such as myself. However, the website with videos that accompany the text is still not available. Big mistake. Videos would've been a great compliment to the text as it is a technique book. This will be a definite 5 star rating as soon as the website is up and running.

A "Must-Have" for chiro student
I bought this book on the recommendation of a Palmer instructor.One of the biggest problems I've had is finding another student to practice with.Not only that, if you practice adjusting wrong, you learn wrong and waste a lot of time & effort - not to mention your frustration level goes into orbit...

The instructors in the classes almost make it look too easy.But they've had tons of experience.Things get a lot more confusing when there are so many techniques, what not to do, where to put your hands, how to stabilize, etc etc etc.This book, though pricey, is concise and to the point with lots of photos - where to place your hands, patient positions, doctor stance, lines of drive & correction, multiple techniques, extremities adjusting, and so forth.School is so hectic and there is so much to learn, so many exams & practicals, boards, more exams, internal orals, etc.We already spend a large fortune on tuition.If you're going to invest in your future, why skimp on the few things that can make your adjusting life a bit easier?

My only regret is that I wish I'd bought and started reading this book in my first quarter at Palmer.

Solid book / reference guide
This is a good learning tool for chiropractic students and good reference guide for practicing physicians. A good addition to any DC's library

Great text to learn chiropractic technique
I recently graduated chiropractic college and found this book to be one of the main sources to help me learn chiropractic technique.The pictures are great.It shows you how to set up and what the direction of torque is.I used this to study for the National Boards Part 2, 3 and 4.It also has a great section on how show how to translate a PRS-SP Gonstead listing into a National or Medicare listing.This section alone helped me a lot on the boards.I also used the following study guides for the preparing for the Chiropractic National Boards:

Pretty good book
This book is pretty good for the pet owner that is interested in the well being of their pet.I agree with other reviewers that the jargon used in this book may be difficult to understand if you are not familiar with chiropractic.The only downside to the book is a little bit of ranting and conspiracy theory done by the author that gets a little old, but it is not that big of a downer.Altogether, this is an excellent book and provides some excellent information.

Make sure The Well Adjusted Dog is in your reference library
As a show dog owner of an active dog that needed chiropractic care as a pup, I am pleased to know that I can now maintain my dog's health with maintenance adjustments. I have been able to avoid 7 hour round trips to a chiropractic veterinarian by using the simple techniques that Dr. Daniel Kamen illustrates in this book.

Every serious pet owner and veterinarian should have this book.

Hmmmm
I was disappointed by this book, and I'm still not exactly sure why. It was definitely informative, and did show several good methods for adjusting my dogs. But it assumed a lot of technical and anatomical knowledge that I'm sure the majority of potential readers does not have, and in fact even with my own fairly in-depth canine knowledge I felt uncomfortable with many of the techniques, especially the one that starts with a disclaimer about how risky it is, says "do not attempt this at home" and then goes right on to detail how to do it.

I guess my impression was that the book was really written by a vet for other vets, under the guise of being aimed at the general public. There is a lot of soapboxing in it, too, about how vets aren't allowed to practice chiropractic and chiropractors aren't allowed to practice on animals... and while this, if still true, definitely sucks - I didn't buy the book to read about it!

Goin' to the Dogs
This book has saved my dog's dignity on more than one occasion.There truly is nothing more gratifying than finding the trouble spot, based solely on observing my dog's behavior, and then being able to refer to this wonderful book for stretching and therapeutic techniques that allow my dog to feel wonderful, almost instantly. One of the best books on chiropractic philosophy
This book is excellent because it tells why adjustments are given--to correct subluxations. It talks about innate and so forth.However, sometimes it's a little scary how some members of the chiro profession worship B.J. and D.D. Palmer.Forms of adjustments have been around for thousands of years from the Romans, Greeks, Chinese.Yes, I know, they were not specific, they did manipulations.Anyway, chiropractic works, it has been working for thousands of years in one form or another.However, it works greater now because now it is specific--targeted to removing nerve interference and correcting the subluxation.I also, highly recommend.

For open minded people
If you're locked in the "medical model" of treating sickness and disease, you probably have no interest in chiropractic or any other "alternative" health care system. So, this book won't be for you. But if you are looking for a better way to approach health and wellness and want an easy-to-read introduction to chiropractic, this book is excellent.

If you notice, most of the people who criticized the book hated chiropractic to begin with -- it's not surprising that they rated the book so low. But that's just their prejudice showing.

This book clearly notes that chiropractic isn't a "cure all" == it is merely (merely??) a way for us to allow our bodies to work properly, the way they were meant to work. It's no wonder the medical profession (and its proponents) fear it.

The book is thorough and easy to read, with plenty of real-life cases to prove the points made. A good companion book is "Chiropractic Works."

Balderdash!
I have reviewed this book and find that, even today, 108 years after D. D. Palmer "discovered" chiropractic, that Rondberg and many of the other reviewers still cling to this yet to be proven "subluxation" and "nerve flow" theory. No one has yet, to scientifically prove that a "subluxation" in the chiropractic sense, actually exists. There has never been any credible published information concerning the relationship of the "subluxations" to organic disease (skin problems, problems walking, diabetes, heart disorders, liver disease, etc). To publish such a book in today's world is irresponsible and leads false hope to people who need true help. It is true that the human body does have the ability to heal itself, but certainly not by the use of spinal adjustments to correct "subluxations." The book reads like a comic book. Professional Advice Worth Every Penny and More
For two years I've been meeting with MDs to bring them information about what we do at my company, Universal Health Institute.It's been a journey of success and failure, and we've clumsily worked to create a way to present ourselves that makes sense.Dr. Acampora's advice fills in alot of the blank spots, particularly the recommended dialogue and its' context.I like the fact that she went out on a limb and identified different types of doctor personalities as well an approach to communication for each one.I've met with about 60 doctors' offices (and about 125 doctors) over the last two years, and can tell that she's been there and done it. Her advice adds the necessary polish to our New Business Development department, and we are taking it seriously.

Get over your fear of approaching MDs
I bought this book pre-ordered before it came out.I have read it, but since then I have to admit that I haven't put the ideas into action. One of the reasons is that my practice partner was launching his own campaign to market to medical doctors.

The author of this book is a chiropractor who had a practice that did not thrive nor receive many referrals despite her being located surrounded by medical offices.She then took on a sales job for a pharmaceutical company where she was taught and became accustomed to making sales calls to medical practices. After a couple of years, she then went back into chiropractic practice armed with the knowledge and experience of selling directly to MDs.

One of the challenges that many chiropractors face when approaching a medical practice is having the proper gambit to meet the doctor.This book shows you how to do that effectively. This book will also help you get over the initial fear of approaching a medical business by telling you exactly how solicitors are perceived by doctors and staff.Hint: It's different than with chiropractic doctors and staff. If you were looking to get over your apprehension of merely approaching a medical practice, get this book.

Good basics for new grad
This book is really basic but it's an easy read and presents some things school doesn't teach you about opening your own practice.

Feeling Ripped Off
164 pages?The first 14 are about the author and the last 21 pages are index and blank pages for notes.Take away the 23 pages of unhelpful sample forms and you are left with 106 pages of very basic information.I am planning on opening a new practice and I do not have any better idea on how to do that after reading this book.Save your money.

What to expect from a chiropractic visit
This book was very well written and was a great learning tool. I think everyone who is seeking chiropractic care should read this book first in order to gain an understanding of chiropractics and to understand the process of chiropratic care.

The Straight Scoop.
In Early 1988 I was rear ended by a Semi Truck.I walked away. By that evening I was in a neck brace and stayed in it 2 weeks.

I went to the Medical Docs and they X-rayed, they did this and that, they said soft tissue injury to me a hundred times, but acted like they were looking into a glass darkly.They said lets try this and that too, and so we tried some of their favorite therapies and sent me to a Physical therapist too.They really had no clue and it showed.

At the PT I was doing as I was told, But It still hurt and it was not getting easier... My left arm had lost strength and dexterity despite all the treatment, Worse yet, the PT was not making things better in the real life I was accustomed to living, and I know my story is a lot like other peoples.

Dr. Lenarz became my Chiropractor.He told me that he felt I could be helped and that I would not have to become a slave to a medical procedure forever. He was very adamant about being Thorough and Accurate.He asked me to try his approach to becoming healthy and so I did.He was right.I got my arm's strength and dexterity back, I don't have problems with pain as I did, and I am not a slave to a medical procedure. No Pills. My Spine was helped back to health and I was too, It all works together.

I am not saying I am free of Chiropractors, I may need to check in with them a few times a year but we all go to dentists regularly too don't we?It is all part of staying Healthy.

My only regret in this story is that I moved away from where Dr. Lenarz has his Practice, and didn't persuade him to come along. Great, Inspiring, and Accurate
This is the most definitive book I have read on Chiropractic. Very informative and it hits the nail on the head. It explains many popular misconceptions about Chiropractic. I understand how Chiropratic is much more than what you might hear on the street or worse from your medical doctor. It also explains the role of Chiropractors and how they work with medical doctors and their role is different from medicine instead of opposed to it. Great book!

I read this to help with pain.As we all know, for "pain go to a chiropracter for help". Well, this got me interested in the scientific evidence to support chiropractic care.The support is not there - basically a faith based treatment for pain, which will work 30% of the time, as good as a sugar pill.There is no scientific evidence to support this book. Perfect and Extremely Detailed
Principles and Practices of Chiropractic aim one unusual and still strange matter of alternative medicines, but it can obviously portrait everything from Philosophy to History and matter of Ethics and World-Based Medicine Insitutes.

It perfectly (with lots of details) shows the entire side of a non-well-known Medicine, and becomes a book, in its 3rd Edition, that could be used in Palmer Universities.

Chiropractic is Universal
This is an excellent book.It's a must for anyone beginning chiropractic study to know what chiropractic is all about.This book is a good reference for some portions of Chiropractic Principles for Part 2 of the National Chiropractic Boards.

I found the Dr. Haldemans book to be a good book. Not the greatest, as certain things were a bit dated but all around an interesting read.

I have never seen such an unprofessional response as yours however. Stuffing the ballet on your referenced site for your own book (yes it was pretty obvious), not to mention the overall lack of professionalism in my opinion.No I?m not an expert in medicine but I know a bit more than you about computer/network technology I would presume.

Then again, I'm just a simpleton. I have no particular stake here one way or the next. I'm not a practicing physician. I?m not even in health care. I'm just a technology guy. (You know, a programmer in C, C++, Ada95, LISP etc.) (I also enjoy the study and design of operating systems and Artificial Intelligence applications) I know... so how DARE I question the almighty physician right?

I've also read your review of New York Chiropractic College. Very strange indeed. You would have to be blind not to find the research lab and it's millions of dollars worth of research equipment.

Odd as well that you chose to accost the tour guide with medical questions. I'm sure the tour guide was a fantastic intellectual boost for you. The Dean seemed,(from your account, I've haven't spoken with him yet), to be kinder and simply choose to give you a book and send you on your way. If I had to put up with your attitude I guess I would have done the same.

Funny as many medical doctors I've spoken with are extremely impressed with the academic rigors of NYCC's curriculum. Particularly those at Bethesda Naval Hospital, where students from New York Chiropractic College often intern. But then again what the heck would I know. I'm just a simple technology guy. What hospital do you work at again?

Tell me again about medical school. Do they still teach neat things in medical school like logic/rhetoric/debate? (They did in the military academy I attended.) If they do, then surely you realize that your statement in which you asked the Dean to? (And I am paraphrasing) ? Prove that Chiropractic is not bunk.? is asking to prove a negative.Under the rules of debate and logic, (you did take that right?) it is, of course impossible to prove a negative.

If you lack the ability to research JAMA, JMT or other peer reviewed journals that is your issue, not the Dean of the school.It sounds to me like you?re more jealous of New York Chiropractic Colleges campus than anything else.

Again please excuse me, I'm a simple technology guy, not a super-all-knowing medical doctor, any mistakes here are my own doing and no one else?s and this is just my simple opinion:

What do Chiropractors do?(A very simple question)

A: Think of the Chiropractor as a conservative health practitioner. Trained in differential diagnosis, the latest diagnostic procedures (You know similar in function toa general practitioner who really knows a lot about orthopedics).They recommend dietary changes/improvements, lifestyle recommendations, exercise if warranted, various physiotherapeutic regimens, and can do allergy work-ups, prescribe orthotics, do X-Ray, MRI, CAT or other radiological diagnostic imaging procedures, utilize multi-class LASAR modalities etc. and when appropriate, they refer to the appropriate allopathic physician (i.e. surgeon, medical specialist etc.)Often those same allopathic physicians refer patients to chiropractors.

There is much more but I digress. I don?t have room here to explain everything and I?m just a simple guy. I don?t have all the answers.

Surely someone of your obvious superior medical talent has better things to do than lambaste a complementary profession?Obviously there is much more to being a Chiropractic Physician andthis is just a very simple, general overview, and you understand what I?m saying.
Maybe you don't.

Or maybe.....just maybe....it's because you and the de-licensed Stephen Barrett (Who has lost every recent court case he's been involved in and is accused of racketeering if I read the court papers correctly) feel a certain amount of fear or envy regarding Dr. Haldemans abilities. After all, he is a triple doctorate holdingDC,MD and Ph.D. degrees. You're degree was as an MD correct?
You graduated in 1945 right?

Maybe it's because you and the five or six other people in your organization (which in my opinion is full of quackery itself) seem to crave the media so much and have something to hide? I think in Psych 101 we called it Shadow Projection (to use a Jungian Term) I don't know. Actions sure speak louder than words though. I see Dr. Holdeman at many medical review panels and neurological symposiums.

Funny.... I haven't seen you at any of the neurology symposiums presenting research to contrast what Dr. Holdeman has been saying. Maybe it's because you can't.

Dr. Haldeman has written a balanced and thorough overview of the chiropractic profession. It is somewhat dated but a medical literature search will quickly bring you up to speed as he continues to publish extensively in journals such as Spine. Another overpriced rehash of common sense.

He gives examples of living on a budget and that's about it.

There is no meat to this book.Had I paid 15 dollars for it, I wouldn't complain.But I didn't.

I expected detailed information on superbilling, marketing, what to say when asked about insurance, etc.

In one chapter about bookkeeping, the author suggests a CPA.This type of common sense is what you'll will get a lot of when you read this book.

Good Ideas within a "Poor Mentality" Base
This book is full of interesting material, on how to develop the practice, the ethics... However I was a little disappointed by the "poor mentality" expressed by the authors; they often relate to the lack of money and how they're always trying to get the cheapest and avoid expenses. I agree that it's important to look carefully over money matters, and that money is much more easily spent than it is owned, but I believe we can be very successful with an abundance mentality. A Fantastic Literature Review

Upper Cervical Subluxation Complex
Absolutely incredible book for lay people and chiropractors and anyone interested in the upper cervical spine.Case studies noted are awesome!Thoroughly recommend it to anyone with an interest in this particular area of the spine...bit of chiropractic and medical terminology to overcome if you are a layperson reading it, but a stimulating book all the same.

Useful Book
This book would have to be the most comprehensive gathering of literature concerning Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic (UCSC), ever. You may need to know everything that has spawned in the literature since Dr BJ Palmer's controversial assertion that the upper cervical spine is the only place chiropractors will find a subluxation. You may just want to casually look up a paper written on the upper cervical spine's influence on health. The book is designed for either type of study. In fact, the beauty of this book is that you don't have to read it so much as refer to it. And for the busy clinician, that's all we can realistically expect.

UCSC is a specialty within chiropractic. As Dr Dan Murphy, DC states in the introduction, for a third of chiropractic's century as a profession "the predominant practice of chiropractic involved primarily the upper cervical spine". Yet, as the Australian experience reflects, it is very few in this country indeed that refrain from directing forces to areas other than C1.

This book is incredible . Everything I have encountered in my own endeavour to seek out anything scientific supporting what BJ was zealously advocating all those years ago, without any apparent evidence, is here. Any low-level writing, such as that of general digest publications, is tolerated well because the reader can look at references instantly to find out how to mentally categorise each opinion. This is a unique format; you don't have to sift through a reference list at the end to see if it was written in this decade, or if your scientific nemesis wrote it! Older papers are listed first, and editorial comment is distinctly defined from abstracts and text. What an enormous gap it fills on my bookshelf.

The only thing this book has not done is to explain the extremely limited uptake of UCSC amongst chiropractors in - and outside of - the USA; which, in turn explains the aching lack of research into large populations undergoing upper cervical chiropractic care, and it's impact on public health.

Yet, does it not make far more sense to discover the intricacies of the articulations of the skull base before any other region is attempted? If you answered yes, this book is for you. If "no", you still need to own it as a complete"chirocentric" literature review of the topic.

This book helps explore the techniques, however I'd like to see more Q&A with the leaders in the various techique systems.For example, why not interview the leaders of structural techniqes or upper cervical tecniques?

Chiropractic technique book charts new waters
I am not aware of any book that covers the same subject matter. As the authors state from the outset, this book is not an advertisement for any of the techniques described in the book, but rather an honest attempt to describe them as they are. It covers the major techniques in chiropractic according to a common format, so that a patient, a chiropractic student, a chiropractor, or anyone else interested in chiropractic can figure out what it means to be treated using one technique as compared with another.

The writing is formal where it needs to be, but very casual and entertaining in places and in contexts where formality would have been more expected. For me, the best part of the book are the chapter introductions. There are anecdotes and personal observations that really make these techniques come alive, and give us a window into how this book came into being. Cooperstein and Gleberzon obviously love these techniques, even the ones where they could not contain their skepticism. It's all chiropractic to them.
Clearly, as authors, teachers, and researchers, they are in the middle of everthing going on in chiropractic.
