5-0 out of 5 stars Why NOT buy it?
If you are a chiropractor then there is no reason you shouldn't buy this book.Even if you already comfortable with your current marketing efforts, this book will likely offer new ideas.Whether they are completely new strategies or ideas to fine tune current marketing efforts. The book is inexpensive, so why not?

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done book for inspiring staff
Every morning our staff reads a few pages to get everyone thinking about how to promote the office. After 18 years in practice, I've pretty much heard it all, but this is well written and organized to jog your thoughts/give inspiration to not just the doctor but the team. This would be a great book for a new practice doctor, staff, or just a Chiropractor who wants a solid outline of ideas on how to promote/market their Chiropractic clinic.

5-0 out of 5 stars As always, Dr. Reizer gives great advice
This book -- Reizer's 5th (I think) -- gives tons of very practical and "do-able" advice on how to successfully implement the most cost-effective marketing tools in the modern chiropractic office. His books have always been valuable assets for chiropractors, whether they're new or have been in practice a long time. This one is even better than the others, if that's possible. Especially in difficult economic times, there is a definite need for effective marketing that doesn't break the budget.

I think the thing that sets Reizer's books apart is his very real desire to help doctors suceed, both for their own sake and the sake of the many patients they help.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just looking for a quick buck.
I understand going to a chiropractor multiple times a week can add up. If you cannot afford your chiropractic care, speak to your chiropractor about your financial hardship. Chiropractic students practice adjusting for years before becoming proficient. Please be realistic when considering this book! Anyone can "pop a bone" but are you doing it effectively to remove all the elements of a subluxation? In addition to not causing further damage to that area as well as other areas? You might feel better after adjusting yourself but there are ramifications people don't seem to understand. Why do you think the author stated he is not responsible for any injury or damage? What will you do if you jam a facet joint, strain muscles or tendons or sprain ligaments, or adjust an area due to pain but there's an underlying bone pathology and you cause a pathological fracture? Also, please understand you are practicing chiropractic without a license and formal training to do so. This book should've never been published and legal action should be taken against the author and publisher. The publisher should've recognized the faults in the publication of this book. However, they were too busy looking for a quick buck just like the author. Amazon is just as guilty for selling such garbage.

1-0 out of 5 stars Are you serious?
You definitely can not learn something that takes people a grueling 4 years to learn from that simple little book. Let's think before giving in to the latest "too good to be true" scheme. You're causing extremely more damage than good by trying these things. Chiropractic is more than just knowing a cool move. Let's think people. You should ask yourself whether you would put your own health at risk or your family's health at risk for something such as this...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, but be careful...
First off, Dr. Holmquist states several times in this handbook that he isn't liable for any injury, etc. He advises you to be very, very careful when practicing chiro techniques. He admits that a book isn't the best venue to convey chiro techniques, which is why the VHS tape is available.

Having said that, this book is [unfortunately] the only thing on the market available for public consumption.

His anatomical diagrams are poorly drawn, but get the point across. His demonstrative photographs are much better. His narratives are straightforward, if a bit bias and preachy.

If you or your family suffer from back problems and cannot afford to see a chiro regularly, then this book may be for you. I would highly, highly suggest buying the accompanying VHS tape, though. The book isn't enough by itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hurray for us simpletons.
First, let me just mention this books saved my job.As a computer programmer I found my wrists becoming worse and worse over time.I scheduled my routine chiropractic visits for awhile, but soon, I found my funds were running dry. On top of this, my wife was suffering at her work due to back pains.Since we could not afford routine chiropractic visits and needed to do something, we decided to give this book a try.

Today, I am back to work with almost no pain in my wrists. My wife can sit at work the entire day without suffering back pains. We find that the chiropractic visits are not enough for routine maintenance. We require adjustments several times per week.We cannot afford this.At the same time I am exercising to strengthen the muscles.Eventually, I am certain things will stay in place. We have decided that in the more serious cases we will see the chiropractor. But for routine maintenance (which we would not see the chiropractor for anyway), we will do it ourselves.

Do NOT listen to the "chirobabble" being spit out in the negative reviews. The techniques are simple and have had no negative affects on us.I believe we would have to try real hard to mess them up.The only people it hurts are the chiropractors, as they receive less visits from us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly 'user friendly' instructional guide
Karl Holmquist is an experienced and professional chiropractor who has compiled an instruction manual on the chiropractic principle in correcting the spine in your own home. Profusely illustrated, comprehensive, practical, offering step-by-step lessons, making it a thoroughly 'user friendly' instructional guide, the "Home Chiropractic Handbook" is ideal for the non-specialist general reader and will hold immense interest for anyone curious about the chiropractic approach to health and medicine. Also very highly recommended for personal and community library Alternative Medicine reference collections is Holmquist's instructional DVD, Home Chiropractic (093508102X, $49.95). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study guide
This is such a thorough study guide for the diagnostic imaging section of the boards.I used this book along with Yochums book,"Skeletal Radiology" and aced this portion of the boards.I was glad I used this book because it showed me the type of questions asked on this portion of the boards. In fact, about 50% of the part 4 boards is on diagnostic imaging if you count also the post-history and post-diagnostic rooms. The thing about this test that is insane is the short time limit you are given for each question.Without this book, I think I would have failed part IV because I would not know what to expect.I have to say I was a lot more calm when taking the test because I was ready for the type of questions that were being asked. This is a must book for anyone taking the Part 4 boards. It's better than spending well over $1000 plus traveling expenses to take the test again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No to cervical manipulations!!!
I wish I read this book before I got hurt from a chiropractor. Now 9 months after he injured me, I have lost my job, the happiness in my family and the quality of my life. And for what??? Neck manipulation should never be done!

1-0 out of 5 stars Consumer Reports
Im a patient of Chiropractic and I have not purchased this book how ver I did want to post something that will help you decide on if you would buy ithttp://www.consumerreports.org/health/medical-conditions-treatments/back-pain/overview/back-pain.htm

Its the consumer that is important and the results...that's all that matters....

1-0 out of 5 stars Depressing
I, for one, have always been respectful of an individual's opinion. I believe the advancement of society to establish a civil, competent, and accomplished world has a key, and it is mutual respect for another's intellectual viewpoint. However, it is quite depressing to see how easily a smear campaign begins between two respectable professions who should possess an altruistic, benevolent, and common goal: to ensure the treatment and maintain the health-being of the patient. It is sad how seemingly thoughtless and easy this can be sacrificed just to prove some pride-driven agenda to smear another profession who is just as educated and trained to serve the public. It is selfish how society is being attempted to be robbed of a possible, alternative cure

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a good book
There are over forty one-star reviews of this book, likely from either chiropractors or patients who have strong belief in chiropractic. But the fact is that chiropractic is a hands-on method which strongly predisposes to a placebo effect. Now, I have found in myself that with certain back pains, I can do a swift rotational movement of my low back, create a popping sensation, and my back feels better. On the other hand, if I do gentle low back exercises and range-of-movement exercises, I can get the same benefit. It is my belief that muscle spasm causes some kind of disorder in the vertebrae that can be corrected by "popping" the joints. Relaxing the muscle tension imbalance is the key; otherwise you can keep popping the vertbrae just about every day, endlessly. Proper posture, relaxation, stress management, range of movement exercises, all of these are keys to spinal health.

Readers are also encouraged to read "Trick or Treatment" by Simon Singh and Edzard Ernst, MD, 2008, an outstanding book which evaluates various aspects of alternative medicine. It comes to similar conclusions as this book, and is a "must-read."

This book is very highly recommended reading; as mentioned by other reviewers, every person wishing to start chiropractic treatment must read this book. Aside from neck chiropractic, of which we need to be extremely wary, chiropractic is licensed by the States of the USA, and low back chiropractic for low back issues might be worth a try. But as to chiropractic for other ailments unrelated to the vertebral system, the patient embarks on such chiropractic at his or her own risk. Chiropractic for children for "health maintenance" ought to be outlawed. The founder of chiropractic is said to have cured a patient of wheezing by adjusting the spine, and this is very much an anecdotal report. Maybe he dislodged a foreign body in a bronchial tube!

1-0 out of 5 stars I know the Editor
It is sad that medicine to this day use lies to defame its competition.Look up the Wilks vs. AMA case. The US Supreme court knows this.Chiropractic is so effective that it is cause for concern for the medical profession since they can't make money if people stop taking their drugs and don't need their surgery.Books like this is trying to scare the public with lies.I don't know who this Magner guy is and how much he gets paid for writing trash, but I do know who Stephen Barrett, the editor, is.He just lost a lawsuit, proven in court of his lies about his medical career and was even quoted saying that "the nervous system does not control and coordinate all functions of the body". Haha... I suppose not in his body!

I've heard first hand from many people that have regained their health with the help of chiropractors.Including one in wheel chair after an auto-accident, and another who woke up blind one day. They both recovered fully, and are inspired to become Doctor of Chiropractic, so they can help others like they've been helped, when all other 'medicine' failed them.

As for this book, I will never buy such trash, this book should be taken off the market and burned. People have been lied to long enough. ... Read more

Product Description
Chiropractic and Naturopathic Mastery of Common Clinical Disorders is a clinically-oriented textbook that introduces and reviews concepts in the assessment and management of the acute and chronic disorders most common in clinical practice: hypertension, diabetes mellitus type-2, immunonutrition, immunorestoration, viral infections, dyslipidemia, musculoskeletal pain, mood disorders (especially depression and anxiety), and allergy and asthma.  Patients are increasingly looking for nondrug and nonsurgical methods for the alleviation of disease and the promotion of optimal health; Chiropractic and Naturopathic Mastery of Common Clinical Disorders provides you with the fundamental information needed for the successful integrative management of  the most common conditions seen in the holistic practice of integrative medicine.  With several thousand citations to the biomedical literature and about 600 pages of clinically-oriented protocols, this book provides enough information to manage a wide range of conditions successfully with evidence-based protocols. Students at chiropractic/naturopathic/osteopathic/allopathic medical colleges will find Chiropractic and Naturopathic Mastery of Common Clinical Disorders to provide a needed blend of concepts as well as the practical how to information on patient management that is often neglected in other textbooks or which can only be obtained after years of clinical experience.  This book will help you synthesize your courses in physical examination, manipulation, physiotherapy, nutrition, botanical medicine, neurology and therapeutic exercise into a cohesive set of skills that enables you to effectively help your patients overcome their acute/chronic health problems while you simultaneously promote optimal health--wellness--by looking at the bigger picture of their overall health rather than simply focusing on the problem. Chiropractic and Naturopathic Mastery of Common Clinical Disorders is a compilation of the most popular chapters from Dr Vasquez's previous editions of Integrative Orthopedics and Integrative Rheumatology with brand-new chapters on Asthma, Diabetes Mellitus Type-2 and Metabolic Syndrome, Hypertension, Disorders of Mood and Behavior, and Acute/Chronic Viral Infections. These new chapters help doctors extend their mastery beyond the musculoskeletal specialization detailed in Dr Vasquez's first three textbooks (Integrative Orthopedics, Integrative Rheumatology, and Musculoskeletal Pain: Expanded Clinical Strategies) to treat a much broader range of clinical problems and thus to achieve higher levels of clinical success.  With these new chapters in addition to the time-tested chapters from his previous books, Dr Vasquez offers students and clinicians access to evidence-based protocols written specifically written for the successful private practice of chiropractic and/or naturopathic medicine. ... I agree 100% with Dr. Smith's review of this text.It is a must read for all chiropractors, newbies and veterans alike.Previous texts by Dr. Vasquez is the very reason I decided to focus more on functional medicine in my practice.Following the concepts in his book, you can help people completely change their lives.People get it too. They realize that medicine is not the solution to their issues, but diet, exercise, and ensuring optimal nutrition is the key to good health.

Whatever the current cost of this book is, it is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Integrated Solutions for Common Health Problems
The book "Chiropractic and Naturopathic Mastery of Common Clinical Disorders - Concepts, Perspectives, Algorithms and Protocols" by Dr. Alex Vasquez is the most comprehensive single resource on integrated solutions for common health problems I've ever come across. With regard to content, this book is a monster. It's 622 pages long and is jam packed with ideas which cover lifestyle modification, botanical / nutritional / supplementation solutions and physical medicine (chiropractic & rehab) solutions for a variety of problems.

The book covers orthopedic/rheumatological problems as well as type-O "organic" diseases (including hypertension, diabetes, immunology, allergy, asthma, autoimmune disease, and much more). The content is highly evidence based and each section includes a LOT of reference citations (most of which come from peer reviewed index medicus journals).I totally disagree with the previous review regarding the book's organization.I believe it is extremely well organized. It's very easy to look up any topic and quickly find answers to your questions. At the front of the book is a table of contents and there is a comprehensive index at the back.So I have no idea why the other reviewer had such an issue with the organization.

This book exceeded my expectations with regards to the quantity, quality and organization of it's content. It deserves to be in the library of every clinician who practices functional medicine, chiropractic and naturopathy.I would give it six stars if that were possible.Congratulations to Dr. Vasquez for writing such a magnificent book.I believe it is destined to become a classic.

Excellent material, but it is very poorly organized! I would rate it a 5 based on the material, but the organization is that bad. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This is the revised second edition, edited with the help of Dr Stephen Barrett, and contains much new informative documentation.

Of particular interest is a revealing dialogue- debate on the internet between the author and the chirpractic community.

It is the only such book on chiropractic ever written by a medical doctor from the standpoint of scientific medicine, a viewpoint that every chiropractor and client should read. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Heart Attack?
Heart attack? Stroke? Really now. Run to your chiropractor?

Good luck.

Yeah, chiro has it's place, and so does massage therapy.

Something serious going on? Yeah, we are the medical profession and we're supposed to catch it and treat it, and report it when it's communicable.

I've known chiro's that refer to MDs when it's appropriate, as they should. But really, adjusting a baby's spine? Come on now, you guys. Credibility goes out the window. And dog chiro? You're disrespectful of veterinary.

MD's refer out to phys therapy. Probably the closest thing to chiro that "legit" medicine can offer. An MD referring to chiro is a rarity. But it's got it place in the grand scheme.

Along with prayer. That can work too.

But when it's life or death, yelling out, "Is there a chiropractor in the house?" just doesn't cut it unless you are also an MD, or a Nurse, or a Paramedic, or a layperson with a CPR card.

But I've got to hand it to the chiro's. You've come a long way from the same junk that MD's used to push with their herbs, tonics, leeches, and old style voodoo medicine. Cigarettes used to be good for you too.

Bill em', don't kill em'. There's profit in treatment and follow up care.

And good press too.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a shocker, not.
Wow, what a shocker - the medical community attempting to discredit chiropractic. Why would that be? I mean, golly...studies done have shown actual health improvements after chiropractic care, while...SHOCKER...the medical community so very often just feeds pills to people to manage symptoms. Pill after pill after pill, prescription on top of prescription, until patients are drugged out on 14 different pills because THE DOCTORS ARE NOT HEALING THEM. So, yeah...threatened by actual HEALING instead of just symptom management, of course they're going to attempt to discredit chiropractic.

Not to say all chiropractors are great and wonderful upright people, but then again, neither are doctors. When's the last time YOU read a news story about some doctor being thrown out of their profession for unethical actions?

1-0 out of 5 stars Allergy Treatment
My asthma indications were progressing steadily each year limiting the quality of life and I was scared for my future.I have great respect for my family physician and my allergist. However, in this instance, albuterol, steroids, antihistamines and allergy shots did not effectively treat my symptoms and certainly were not getting to the root cause.I have been treated successfully through acupunture, nutrition, chiropractic and massage therapy.I really do not care which therapy did the most good.I can breath!I gladly pay out of pocket for care that does not include unnecessary powerful drugs and works.

1-0 out of 5 stars What an idiot.
It never ceases to amaze me.Medical care, by their own statistics,is at least the 3rd, and possibly the second or first leading cause of death in this country ("Is US Health Really the Best in the World"; Barbara Starfield, MD, MPH; JAMA, July 26, 2000--Vol 284, No. 4), and calls Chiropractic dangerous and unproven?People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find where the funding for such "propaganda" as this comes from.Amazon needs to add a review rating of zero stars, as one is too many for this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars And meds dont kill over 300 people a day?
There is plenty of research out there to back up chiropractic and the benefits people receive from such. All people have to do is get off there lazy buts and read it. over 300 people a day die from adverse drug reactions and we hardly hear about that. One incident occurs in the media about chiropractic and that streamlines. MD's are SCARED of chiropractors because we offer a way to correct problems instead of covering up symptoms that can only make people worse. This author wanted to make a few bucks and just bad mouth chiropractic. ... Read more
