1-0 out of 5 stars 100 Greatest Songs in Christian Music
I was so disappointed with this book simply because I bought it thinking it was an actual song book with music in it so I would be able to play the songs it listed as being in it.Instead, it's a book that talks about each song.No music anywhere.I had even emailed the seller to ask where my songbook was because it took about three weeks to receive it and in the response, it wasn't mentioned that this was not a songbook.I thumbed through it when I finally received it but it will go to Goodwill and a lesson learned by me. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Insight for the Role of Music in Worship
As a Lutheran church musician, I found this book fascinating and informative. Many of us have favorite hymns, and love singing in worship, but I think we may have forgotten that for Luther music was a means to teach and reinforce Christians' understanding of Scripture.

I don't think that one need be Lutheran to appreciate this book, however some references will be unfamiliar to those who have not studied music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
This is an absolutely excellent study of Luther's philosophy and theology of music and its use to proclaim the Gospel of Christ. It is extremely well researched, engagingly presented, and filled with wonderful insights. The title might be a bit misleading since this is not merely a study of Luther's use of liturgical music, but rather a comprehensive overview of the role of music in Martin Luther's theology and pastoral practice. The book is packed with information. This book will rightly take its place as one of the most definitive treatments of this subject, more or less neglected in much of Luther studies in English. Put this book together with the Lutheran Confessions and you have a very well rounded vision for church life and confession in the Lutheran Reformation tradition. They are drawn from a wide variety of sources including letters, diaries, periodicals, hymnal and tunebook prefaces, theological treatises, certain controversial books and pamphlets, and deliberations of church councils. The material ranges in date from the beginning of the second century to the 1960s. Product Description
Christian Wolff is a composer who has followed a distinctive path often at the centre of avant-garde activity working alongside figures such as John Cage, Merce Cunningham, and Cornelius Cardew. In a career spanning sixty years, he has produced a significant and influential body of work that has aimed to address, in a searching and provocative manner, what it means to be an experimental and socially aware artist. This book provides a wide-ranging introduction to a composer often overlooked despite his influence upon many of the major figures in new music since the 1950s from Cage to John Zorn to the new wave of experimentalists across the globe. As the first detailed analysis of the music of this prolific and highly individual composer, "Changing the System: The Music of Christian Wolff" contains contributions from leading experts in the field of new and experimental music, as well as from performers and composers who have worked with Wolff. The reception of Wolff's music is discussed in relation to the European avant-garde and also within the context of Wolff's association with Cage and Feldman.Music from his earliest compositions of the 1950s, the highly indeterminate scores, the politically-inspired pieces up to the most recent works are discussed in detail, both in relation to their compositional techniques, general aesthetic development, and matters of performance. The particular challenges and aesthetic issues arising from Wolff's idiosyncratic notations and the implications for performers are a central theme. Likewise, the ways in which Wolff's political persuasions - which arguably account for some of the notational methods he chooses - have been worked out through his music, are examined. With a foreword by his close associate Michael Parsons, this is a valuable addition to experimental music literature. ... Read more

Product Description

Don Cusic presents gospel music as part of the history of contemporary Christianity. From the psalms of the early Puritans through the hymns of Isaac Watts and the social activism of the Wesleys, gospel music was established in eighteenth-century America. With the camp meetings songs of the Kentucky Revival and the spirituals and hymns that stemmed from the Civil War and beyond, gospel music grew through the nineteenth century and expanded through new technologies in the twentieth century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Researched
Dr. Cusic is to be commended for doing an excellent job of tracing the chronology of Gospel music all the way from its beginnings in the Bible to the present day. The documentation is thorough. His writing style is easy to follow. Fans of Gospel music are indebted to him for compiling the pieces of the puzzle in this volume.

In the introduction he defines Gospel music. He breaks it down into various subcategories and describes the differences between them. In the first chapter he goes on to talk about the musical heritage found in the Bible.

Chapter two contains a history of early church music. He says church music moved away from the use of instruments for a time because of the association of instruments with pagan rites, the theatre, and the circus.

John Calvin and Martin Luther are two sixteenth century figures in the spotlight in chapter 3. Their theology that an individual could communicate with God had ramifications for Christian music. Chapter four discusses Luther as a songwriter. In chapter five we arrive on American soil and the story continues as we're told of the first seeds of Gospel music in this country.

This book is full of anecdotes of well-known personalities and the audiences they sought to reach. It provides coverage of a niche that has frequently been overlooked. Thanks to Dr. Cusic and other researchers it is now gaining attention. ... Read more

Product Description
This book began as an attempt to carry out a suggestion made in 1929 by Carl Engle in his "Views and reviews"—to fulfill his wish for "a living record of musical personalities, events, conditions, tastes... a history of music faithfully and entirely carved from contemporary accounts."In The Early Christian Period and the Latin Middle Ages, we witness the merger of musica, then an abstract academic enterprise, and cantus, or practical music. The volume spans a millennium of writings, ranging from scriptural commentaries by St. Jerome and other fourth-century Church Fathers to an excerpt from Speculum musicae, an extensive fourteenth-century treatise by Jacques of Liège. Along the way we read from the works of St. Augustine, Boethius, Hildegard of Bingen, Guido of Arezzo, Franco of Cologne, and a score of others, all in impeccable English translations prepared or revised by James McKinnon. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Rebirth
I searched high and low for this book and was only able to find it here. I am so grateful for Amazon!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Unique, but Definitely not Biblical.
On the back of this book you will find the words, "A unique view of the real meaning and purpose of music". Well, I'll give it that much. This book certainly does present a unique view of the real meaning and purpose of music, but it's a far cry from being biblical.

I was convinced early on that this book would prove to be another unbiblical rant against rock music. This was proved after reading the book in its entirety. Just the first chapter of `The Rebirth of Music' presents numerous examples of the philosophical nature of the arguments used throughout the book. Many scripture references are given, but readings of all sorts which are just not there are inserted into the texts . As an example I'll quote a section from the very first chapter of `The Rebirth of Music' where Ezekiel 28:13-14, 16 and Isaiah 14:11 are the subjects of such treatment.

Pages 13-14
"Music was given or created to minister to God the Father. Music was born and birthed in Lucifer to bring worship to the Almighty God. Music in the beginning was created to worship God. Any other use of music other than worship to God is a violation of purpose for which God created music. God did not create music for any secular purpose. He did not even create music for evangelism. God created music for worship. Music can be used to reach the unsaved, but if that is all we use music for we are living beneath our privilege and are not reaching a total spiritual fulfillment in music."

Now many things can be said about these statements,

(i) The idea that music was born and birthed in Lucifer is utterly foreign to the scriptures.

(ii) The idea that music was created solely to minister to God is also foreign to the scriptures.

(iii) The scriptures don't give any one exclusive use for music. They do list worship as one of the uses of music, but it nowhere states that using music for other reasons is a violation of the purpose for which God created it. I have consistently seen a lack of biblical support in the promotion of anti-rock music Christianity. `The Rebirth of Music' suffers from this as well, and shows it in its need to employ eisegesis in order to claim scriptural support.

Another idea presented in `The Rebirth of Music' is that Lucifer carried his "ministry of music" down with him and is now using music as a tool to war against God. It's interesting to note that page 16 says, "However, the Bible doesn`t say that when God cast Lucifer out of His presence that He took away his ministry of music," Well, most of the ideas in `The Rebirth of Music', including the idea that Lucifer even HAD a ministry of music, are likewise never declared in scripture, and yet they are emphasized over and over and over again with no support whatsoever.

Of course, rock music is indicated as the genre used by the devil to incite people to perform sinful actions, and the arguments about rock stars being involved in drug abuse, alcoholism, Satanism, and other immoral behavior are employed to show a direct link between them and the supposed harmful effects of rock music. `The Rebirth of Music' and another book entitled `The Truth About Rock Music' by Dr. Hugh Pyle both fail in this regard as neither show how things like drug use and alcoholism are a link to rock music instead of one from the other, or just a general wish to feel intoxicated. Nor is it explained how other immoral behavior exhibited by rock stars couldn't have its roots in the mind destroying activities just previously mentioned.

But even `The Truth About Rock Music' is at least more consistent with its teachings. On page 58 of 'The Rebirth of Music' it is stated, "There may be nothing wrong with a love song about a girl," How can this statement be consistent with the argument that any non-worship music is a violation of God's purpose for creating it? Why shouldn't that kind of music get the same rap that rock music is given? It indicated clearly to me that this book isn't much more than another weak attempt to condemn rock music as some ungodly form of entertainment.

There are more errors I could address, but I think I'll stop here. It's because of such numerous problems that this book failed to convince me that rock music was evil. I've strongly believed that rock music is a powerful genre of music that can improve people's moods and health, and thus their spirituality. I'm happy to say that after reading this book I still stand firm in my convictions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and should be required reading
The Rebirth of Music by LaMar Boschman is excellent and should be required reading for anyone who is in music ministry and thinking about music artistry (performance).

This book changed my life and I am in the process of creating the Workbook and Discussion Guide to accompany the book for The Abundant Life School of Ministry and Music, here in Birmingham, Alabama.

This is a book you can't go wrong with. The listing of 989 scriptures of music in the Bible alone is worth the price of the book. Thank God for this great gem written by LaMar Boschman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really blessed
It's a wonderful book. Really the Anointing ofGod was upon the Author while he was writing this book. It explain simply but deeply what music is and the purpouse it was created for and how the enemy corrupted it and is using it to steal souls from God's Kingdom. And, finally, it makes you know how you are supposed to use music to bring praise and worship to the Almighty God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good fake book
Good selection of songs written up to about 2000 (any fake book is unlikely to have the latest). Although some hits are missing and there are some more obscure songs in there, it's very useful. (But if you don't know how to play from a fake book, look elsewhere for full scores.)

As I remember, songs are laid out such that it is unnecessary to turn pages in the midst of a song.

Comb binding is large enough that pages turn easily. It should be rather durable. (I own other fake books with similar bindings that have been too tight (skimping?): one has lost it's back cover, pages don't turn well in another so I hate to use it.)
