Editorial Review Product Description Imagine you have the chance to spend an hour or so alone with a couple of well-published writers. Imagine they share with you secrets of their art, and reveal how their art relates to their faith. This is the experience awaiting you with the twenty-two authors of this book. In A Syllable of Water, some of today's leading writers of faith reflect on all aspects of the writing vocation and process in ways that will inform and inspire. Philip Yancey, Richard Foster, Luci Shaw, and others discuss everything from the tools of a writer to the ways that they spend their time when they are not writing. Editors such as John Wilson (Books & Culture) and American Book Award-winning Cherokee poet, Diane Glancy, reflect on the value of the editor-writer conversation, as well as the power of revision. And other writers of stature including Doris Betts, John Leax, Erin McGraw, Harold Fickett, Virginia Stem Owens, Jeanne Murray Walker, Scott Cairns, and Eugene H. Peterson offer sage advice on how to approach nearly every imaginable genre from fiction and nonfiction to memoir, poetry, and translation. Customer Reviews (4)

Editorial Review Product Description How should we understand the stories of the Babylonian Talmud? Where do they come from? Why are they in the Talmud? How do they relate to Talmudic law? In Talmudic Stories, Jeffrey Rubenstein deepens our appreciation for the complexity of these texts by drawing attention to the literary aspects and cultural contexts that are essential to understanding their narrative art, meanings, and importance. Focusing on six famous stories of the Babylonian Talmud and discussing many others in relation to these, Rubenstein's analysis illuminates the ways in which the rabbis used narratives to grapple with fundamental tensions of their culture. The book also features an appendix including the original Hebrew/Aramaic texts for the reader's reference. Customer Reviews (1)

Editorial Review Product Description From A Walk Between Heaven and Earth Unlike any other guide to journal writing, A Walk Between Heaven and Earth is itself written as a personal journal and as a meditation on the flow of creation. Burghild Nina Holzer demonstrates that the creative process is in fact a large, ongoing movement in our lives and that we may gradually discover the pattern and direction of it by trusting whatever it is we choose to confide to the page. She helps would-be writers recognize the power and importance of opening themselves to the present moment and recording whatever they find there. Holzer's book is both inspiration and model. It will appeal not only to those who wish to explore the creative process as a mystical path, but to all who desire to express themselves through writing. "Like Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, this journal is both a useful guide and wonderful to read in its own right. It took only a few pages for me to feel as if I was walking in well-loved familiar places, hearing the voice of an old friend." Joseph Bruchac, author of Dawn Land Burghild Nina Holzer teaches us to write by teaching us living process. She is marvelous at following herself for the benefit of teaching others how to do so. I loved her book." Arnold Mindell, author of Working on Yourself Alone Customer Reviews (4)

An Inside Glimpse into Christian Novelists
Some interesting Bios; disturbing ecumenical cross-section
Fresh, but Filtered, Air The good: I appreciated the variety and sheer number of Christian authors represented in this volume. Each had a tale of struggle and triumph on the road to publication.I found worthy lessons in each chapter.Randy Alcorn's financial sacrifices, Dee Henderson's steady planning, Bodie Thoene's physical limitations...all of these, and more, were uplifiting and challenging to any would-be authors such as myself. The bad: The editor decided to underline the evident lessons with spiritual platitudes and trite endings. The stories--as should be, from any fiction writers--spoke for themselves.Unfortunately, the mini-sermons wore on my patience. In addition, I got the feeling at a number of points that the authors' true struggles had been tidied up a bit for the Christian audience. Thankfully, the authors who do attempt full disclosure manage to breathe fresh air into this book, even if we can't fully appreciate it.Still, any fresh air is worth it in the lonely world of a writer.
Appeals to a certain audience Each author's story is told in its own chapter, and the chapters are grouped into sections according to how the authors perceived and/or answered "God's call" for them to write Christian novels and stories, although they could all be lumped into a single category: "God calls, the author resists the call, God encourages them to persevere, author becomes and continues to be successful." A common thread of humility runs through all the stories-none of the authors included seems to have known they were talented at writing fiction until God showed them through their successes that it's what they were meant to do (and sometimes not even then.) The book seems aimed at a Christian audience, and at the end of each author's personal story is a mini-sermon interjected by the author to encourage readers to answer God's call for their own lives, whatever it may be-writing, cooking, keeping house, or simply maximizing the opportunity to witness for God in their current line of work and daily life. Behind the Stories will appeal to fans of Christian fiction, and generally anyone who embraces the philosophy of living according to a higher spiritual plan and purpose for their life. Biblical and doctrinal references keep the book from being accessible to a more general audience, who may be put off by the heavy-handed spiritual message.
