5-0 out of 5 stars BETTER HOMES & GARDENS DOES HOLIDAYS BEST!
The BGH "Creative Ideas" cooking special editions are an important part of our holiday cookbook shelf. Although it's listed here as a "paperback" (because it is not one of the regular BGH magazine issues), the format is basically a heavier than usual magazine, with better quality glazed paper and great photographs.

This particular issue is possibly their best Winter holidays edition - it takes you through the entire task of holiday entertaining, from the cooking to the settings. The recipes are OUTSTANDING. Even outside of holiday times we return to the appetizer and desserts sections, and the more non-holiday specific types of meat preparations. Our copy has gotten quite tattered and just underwent scanning and reprinting on our printer - it was worth the effort because it will keep us going for years (or until we can't stand up in the kitchen any more...).

We're surprised to see a few copies available here on Amazon. Whetever the condition, it's worth getting because it will really make your holiday cuisine spectacular.
ENJOY! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have not made a bad recipe from this book yet! Especially recommending the spinach & artichoke dip, but honestly, anything you might choose from this collection should be incredible. Great pictures for so many recipes, advice on cooking & hosting the perfect holiday get together, pre-planned menus...

3-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, organized a little funny
I love Cooking Light and I subscribe to the magazine, so liking the food in the cookbook was not the question.I was a little surprised how it was organized though.I prefer cookbooks to be organized in a per type of recipe fashion (i.e. separated by cookies, meats, side dishes, appetizers, etc.).Instead, they organized by different menus.Yes, the tips were handy, but hard to find if you are looking for a cookie recipe and need a tip on cookies, for example.I had to go through page by page (and eventually, just turned to the index) to find all of the dessert recipes.*sigh*They could have made this a lot more convenient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
Excellent book. I've had it a few weeks and tried about ten recipes and they've all been delicious. This is definately a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just a holiday cookbook!
This is a GREAT book! It has many, many different and interesting recipes that are not the same-old, same-old holiday fare. The suggested menus and wine pairings make it simple and undaunting to throw together a small or large party. And I love that a lot of the recipes list make-ahead components. The recipes included in this book are ones you can enjoy all year round. Don't wait for a holiday to try them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Many Wonderful Recipes
This book has many different takes on traditional holiday food plus many unique recipes that one might not usually consider when preparing their holiday feast. There is even a section that includes ideas for edible holiday gifts. I am a subscriber to Cooking Light magazine and own many of their other books, and the recipes never dissapoint. Everything I have made has been delicious. There are so many good recipes I had trouble narrowing down what recipes to make for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

One of my favorite recipes from this book is the Marbled-Chocolate Banana Bread. I plan on using this book year-round. ... Read more

Product Description
The annual Fredericksburg Christmas parade marks the beginning of the Hill Country's holiday season, which means the Pastry Queen is kicking into high gear at her Rather Sweet Bakery and Café. As party invitations pile up in the mailbox, Rebecca Rather is up to her elbows in sticky meringue, gooey chocolate, and a sleigh's worth of savory indulgences to meet the Texas-sized entertaining-to-go orders of her neighbors. In THE PASTRY QUEEN CHRISTMAS, Rebecca shares nearly a hundred traditional recipes reflecting her made-with-love-from-scratch philosophy and the tastes of small-town Texas. Tree-trimming, open houses, cookie decorating, and Santas running down Main Street . . . Christmas time is here. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One big glitch
I've been successfully baking for years and years and years...and this book is beautiful. For this year'sChristmas, I made the Caramel Merangue pie. While looking absolutely beautiful, it was an OVERLY sweet pie, that did not set up properly. The caramel was too loose to cut in slices, and ended up as a sloppy mess.I would never make it again. While I would never judge a cookbook solely on the merits of one recipe, I gave it 4 stars because I'm hoping the other recipes will be much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Try the Eggnog Cheesecake recipe
There is a recipe for eggnog cheesecake in this book that is incredible. The preparation seems involved but if you follow the steps it will come out great. My guests cleaned their plates before I served the last piece....It was to die for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful book from Rebecca Rather
Can Rebecca Rather write a bad cookbook?Never! This book is geared toward Christmas, but I use the recipes all year long. When I want to bake, my first books to choose from my library are Rebecca's books.I can always find something that tweaks my interest. The Christmas book is like her first in the way that I have the ingredients in my pantry. The photos are great and the stories about herself, her daughter, employees and customers make me feel as if I know her on a personal basis. Now I can't wait for her next book on entertaining to be published. It should be available in October and I'm counting the days until I receive my copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars YUM!
The photos and stories are excellent. The chicken lasagna was great, my dad said it was the best ever! It had kind of a Tex Mex flair.I even left out a few of her ingredients like substituting evaporated milk for the heavy cream and roasting my own chicken instead of buying a rotisserie chicken. The ingredient list looks long but the ingredients were already in my cabinet. She also gives alternative options to make the same dish.I'm a beginning cook and it was easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Gift for Yourself
This cookbook is both a visual feast and an interesting read....I'm so glad Amazon made it more affordable than many of the retail stores at which I've seen it for sale.I can't wait to try some of the recipes, particularly the Apple-Spice Layer Cake with Caramel Swirl Icing and the Cranberry Walnut Scones. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Start of A Good Gift
I got my "Boss" as my Secret Santa recipient at work this past Christmas. Luckly, I had already purchased this pretty book with great photos. After reviewing the recipes, I prepared a couple of simple food items from the book that would keep (thyme croutons and salad dressing). Place them in a basket with the book, a note andbottle of my favorite wine, Le Crema, and "Wha-La" a great personal gift, The book is a show case of ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The seller is the best; but wished I could have seen a page before buying

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas
These Williams-Sonoma books have always been good but the newer editions are better because in addition to the menu, they also provide a work plan. I made the entire Italian Christmas dinner almost without a hitch (had trouble finding squid and had to improvise with octopus). But wow - it was amazing. ... Read more

Excellent choice for the coming holiday season. I am especially excited about the huge section towards the back with ideas for gifts. Very creative things like fudge, candy-making, powdered drink mixes, life-saver ornaments, etc. Additionally, there's a section on crafts, like making your own garland with real dried apples as well as centerpieces with pine cones and candles. All this paired with dinner recipes, appetizers, desserts and best of all, alcoholic drinks - cran-tinis, homemade eggnog, the works. The talented staff of a favorite American magazine has condensed everything they know about Christmas into one handy book to help make the holidays extra special for families everywhere. A comprehensive guide to creating your own fabulous Christmas, the Big Book of Christmas contains over 100 craft, gifting, and decorating projects as well as more than 80 tested, proven, and scrumptious holiday recipes. With clear and concise instructions, it`s easy for readers to create the stunning patchwork star tree topper as well as king-sized candlesticks to set the mood. Handmade gifts help them send the love of the season to family and friends, while table treats like the Rocky Road Clusters make the holidays extra sweet. Organized in carefully planned sections such as `Red White and True Christmas,` `Merry Mini-Trees,` and `Gifts Galore,` this is the one book to get and to give for those who hold the holidays dear.Amazon.com Review
Ornaments, edibles, and gifts fill the pages of Family Circle Big Book of Christmas, some in fairly traditional style with Victorian flavor, others with a bit more of a country orientation. Projects include a mantel full of elegant stockings, a wreath heavily encrusted with buttons, folk-art treasure boxes adorned with felt hearts, and a pair of host and hostess vests boasting sporty red and gold stripes.

Directions are somewhat brief but generally adequate; the materials sections, however, are hard to decipher at a glance because all the items are run together in a paragraph instead of separated into a list. Although not terribly inspired, the photos are reasonably clear, and most projects are relatively easy. The bulk of the book is devoted to recipes, such as a full brunch, a complete Christmas dinner, a round-robin dinner party, and lots and lots of desserts. --Amy Handy ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Cookbook
I bought this cookbook for my daughter for Christmas and am now going to buy one for myself.Unfortunately, I am not an avid cook so I enjoy pictures. This cookbook has plenty of good recipes with great pictures!

5-0 out of 5 stars Polish the silver, set out the best china, light the candles
It's Christmas...all through this book. I "borrowed" this book a couple of years ago and finally returned it, but only after buying my own copy!

Southern Living puts out the best cookbooks. The recipes are tried and true, easy to follow and, always, delicious.

In Santa's Bakeshop you'll find Fresh Lemon Muffins, Gumdrop Wreath Bread, and Herb Buttered Crescents. My family loves Cheesy Pretzel Rolls, which fast became a classic when I first found the recipe.

The Cream-filled Chocolate Cake on page 64 became a staple for birthdays in our house, so it gets a workout more than once a year.

Chapter titles are as festive as the season: Merry Munchies, Visions of Sugarplums, Elfin Delights (full of treats for the children like Santa Claus Cupcakes), Frosty Fixings and Making a List, to name a few.

Although there are appetizers and some sandwiches (like Peanut Butter Candy Cane sandwiches for the kids), the emphasis here is on sweets -- drinks, cookies, cakes, breads and candies -- so don't buy this one if you're looking for entrees or vegetable dishes.

The book is gorgeous. Illustrations are Christmasy and colorful photographs that are as appetizing as the recipes. As usual, with a Southern Living Cookbook you can't go wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice recipe book
I've always wanted this book! The Williams-Sonoma recipe books never fail to impress me (this is my 3rd book) with their descriptions, recipes and delicious looking photos. In this particular book it has recipes that are traditional including eggnog, mulled wine, turkey, goose, ham, etc.

There are a number of recipes that I love in theory and usually only like in practice. These recipes involve ingredients and concepts that I find very appealing, but there's just something about the way the individual recipes get executed that leaves something to be desired. Stuffed mushrooms fall into this category. Recipes like this make great test recipes when I'm evaluating a cookbook because usually their quality is highly dependent on a careful balance of flavors, good technique, and adequate kitchen-testing. So, naturally, one of the recipes we made from this cookbook was the stuffed mushroom recipe. It turned out to be the best stuffed mushroom recipe I've ever had--everything that I've always felt stuffed mushrooms ought to be but rarely were. They were buttery, slightly crispy, flavorful, easy-to-make, and absolutely delightful.

My only reservation, and it's a tiny one, is that the cookbook sometimes sticks with older, stodgier techniques when newer, faster ones do the job just as well. I'm sure it would stick in many chefs' throats to suggest that you could spray the mushrooms with olive oil cooking spray instead of painstakingly brushing them with olive oil using a pastry brush, but I did half of the mushrooms one way and half the other and honestly couldn't tell which mushrooms were which--there were no identifiable differences in the finished product.

The full-color photographs that go with the recipes are simple, elegant and lovely. The layout is easy to understand, with the different elements of the recipes set off visually from one another and the instructions broken into bite-sized chunks. The recipes are surprisingly uncomplicated, although as mentioned in some places they could be even simpler; certainly for elegant holiday fare this is easy cooking.

The point is, no matter what I pulled from this cookbook--new, old, doubtful, sure thing--it rose to the occasion. Every single recipe delighted us. Each one left us sighing with happiness. So whether you want to make crab bisque this Christmas (or Thanksgiving, or Easter, or New Year's, or other holiday of your choice), butternut squash and apple soup, rack of lamb with cranberry-chile relish, brisket braised in red wine, wild rice pilaf with dried cranberries and pecans, chocolate mousse cake, chicken hash, panettone French toast, gougeres, eggnog, or even chocolate truffles, I highly recommend picking up a copy of this cookbook. It's definitely worthy of any special occasion you might wish to celebrate. ... Read more
