5-0 out of 5 stars FOR EVERYONE'S FIRST CHRISTMAS FEAST!
If this is the first Christmas you have actually had to prepare the festive feast, this book is for you.It even tells you what to do with that odd-shaped turkey, like which side is up and which side is down, how to truss the critter up and where the stuffing goes.My son-in-law, who loves to cook but is lacking a lot in patience and aptitude, shocked the heck out of our entire family the first year he married my daughter, by coming to the dining room table with chain saw in hand and commenced to carve the Christmas turkey!Considering my children were raised in a rather conservative, refined environment, this event certainly left many mouths hanging open at the dining room table! How I wish this book had been published about ten years ago. (He is still cooking and basting, by the way, but has traded the chain saw for less ominous utensils.)

Like all the "Dummy" books, this one will bring a chuckle or two but at the same time save the reader from making some drastic mistakes when preparing the Christmas feast. For all novices to the Christmas kitchen, this book is for you and worth a five-star rating. ... Read more

The ADVENTure of Christmas
is a guide for moms concerned that their children are losing sight of Jesus in the midst of the distractions the holiday season brings. Lisa Whelchel was such a mom, but instead of abandoning the traditions of Christmas she rediscovered their original meanings, which were intended to remind people of God’s unfathomable gift. Hanging lights on the house, wrapping gifts, and decorating the tree have become opportunities to teach her children about how they relate to Jesus’ birth. With The ADVENTure of Christmas, mothers can redeem what’s been lost from the very symbols that are gentle reminders of the true meaning of Christmas.

Have you discovered that Jesus sometimes gets lost in the middle of the hustle and bustle of His birthday party? Would you like to be able to keep your children's focus on Jesus and also join them in the wonder of the celebration?

For each of the twenty-four days preceding Christmas, The ADVENTure of Christmas serves as a fun and handy guide that describes the significance behind your favorite traditions. Hanging lights on the house, wrapping gifts, and decorating the tree will become opportunities to share how these customs relate to Jesus' birth. The ADVENTure of Christmas recaptures the true meaning of this beloved season, giving reasons to celebrate for years to come.

Story Behind the Book

Feeling like Jesus had gotten lost in the frenzy of the holiday season, I asked the Lord to show me what I could do to teach my children the true meaning of Christmas. I was caught off-guard when He simply replied, "Don’t do anything differently. Look in the middle of the celebration and you will find Me." He was right. There was no need to orchestrate moments to pontificate about "the commercialization of Christmas." Instead, Jesus is beckoning us to come to the party and bring the kids. In doing so, we run into Him at the mall, the movies, even at school. He hides in the lights, the carols, and the cards. He is there when we dress the evergreen tree, when Dad dresses up in a red suit, and even when we eat turkey and dressing! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is incredible
I love this book.First it's beautiful to look at.Great colors.Second it explains where all the Christmas traditions come from. Why they started in the first place. For example, why do we put lights on the trees, or why we have candy canes it tells you why. Then it also has an application of how to break it down for little ones and explain it to them. This is set up as an advent book so you can do one page a day until Christmas comes.

Martha Stewart's fans look to her to provide a sense of what'spossible with unlimited taste and plenty of decorating funds, andcertainly no one else does Christmas with such flair.Martha'sChristmas feast may seem a bit over the top, with silver-leaved fruitat each place setting, crystal decanters of French dessert wines, andcake stands holding more decorations, but it photographs nicely--and,of course, the food looks great. There's also an easier New Year's Dayparty suggestion that will appeal to more casualparty-givers. 2-0 out of 5 stars What's with the pastels?
I am a Martha Stewart fan, but this book disturbed me with its creepy pastels and white motif that pervaded the book. This sucked the Christmas spirit right out of me.I do yearn for the deep rich colors and and oldmoney feel that were the Martha of yore. Now everything is post-divorcebright minimalist.

2-0 out of 5 stars A rehash of past magazines
If you subscribe to the magazine you will be very disappointed. Most ofthe projects are articles directly out of the past couple years' Winterissues. If you don't subscribe, you will enjoy the book. It's a scam fortrue Martha devotees.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why is the cover so ugly?
ALl I have to say about this book is one thing:It's a shame an art-driven publisher like Clarkson Potter would allow an ugly cover like this to bear their logo.Obvious last-minute slap job of magazine scrap pieces. What a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't imagine the holidays without it!
What would Christmas be without Martha Stewart?I can't imagine. This book covers Christmas in every stage from planning a month before to enjoying the big day. Everything is mapped out in accessible detail. The finished products look so "Martha Stewart," yet they are so simple to make, especially the folded paper stars, boxes of Swiss meringue,(which are spectacular) and the felt bags.My book is well worn and I find myself reaching for it almost monthly. The Lime Meringue Tartrecipe alone is worth the price of the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Christmas how to,elegant and easy!

Amazon.com Review
With more than 80 projects and nearly 80 recipes, The Spirit of Christmas: Creative Holiday Ideas overflows with ideas for bringing the excitement of the season into your home. Organized by style, the decorating section of this lavishly illustrated volume offers a nice choice of varied looks for wreaths, garlands, ornaments, mantelpiece toppers, and more. "Noble Estate," for instance, evokes the genteel splendor of a grand country home; "Dreamy White Christmas" focuses on snowy and silvery shades; and "Reindeer Games" fills the room with charming renditions of Santa's herd.

The gift chapter includes a lovely decoupaged clock and etched goblets. The extensive food section features a Yuletide feast, breakfast with Santa, a progressive dinner, a cookie swap, and many other delectable recipes. Directions are good, although their placement at book's end, far from the finished photographs, means frequent flipping back and forth. Most projects are relatively easy, and all relevant patterns are included. Whatever your style or skill level, you'll find Christmas inspiration aplenty here. --Amy Handy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Spirit Of ChristmasVol #15 by Leisure Arts
This book was gracefully presented. It illustrated several styles of the Christmas Spirit along with EASY to follow instructions at the back of the book.

Each project was very basic in ideas but the way in which each were presented made you stop & think how you could incorporate it in your own home.

I found the perfect gift to make for the neighbors this year. It's called a Festive Floral Topper made with red silk poinsettia, greenery and red, hard candy in an ivy bowl with the floral arranged as a topper.Add a festive Christmas bow and anyone would feel Special!

A friend of mine bought this book and was kind enough to let me "borrow" it.Now I need to buy one of my own.

Thanks Leisure Arts for more great crafts ideas!! Sincerely, Debbie Statham ... Read more

Product Description
Christmas beers, also known as Winter Warmers, are a tradition dating back at least 2,000 years, with the ancients making highly intoxicating brews to celebrate winter’s Saturnalia. This brewmaking evolved into a holiday celebration when medieval monks, the world’s first professional brewers, pulled out their finest ingredients to produce soul-warming styles for the occasion. Today brewers continue the custom, either with centuries-old recipes or newfangled concoctions with spices and herbs, enabling thirsty beer fans to put aside their everyday favorites each winter and deck the halls with the world’s most flavorful ales and lagers, brewed especially for the holidays.Beer expert Don Russell taps into holiday cheer with a look at the world’s best—unusual, exotic, rich, one-of-a-kind brews—detailing the styles and flavors that will leave beer lovers in a froth. From Smuttynose Winter Ale to Santa’s Butt to Troegs Mad Elf to Left Hand XXXmas, there’s a beer for everyone, even a Hanukkah beer, He’Brew Jewbelation. Including funny tales and trivia behind the beers, homebrew recipes and food recipes with Christmas beer as an ingredient, and instructions for building and cellaring your own vintage holiday brews so you can enjoy Christmas 365 days a year, Christmas Beer will put even the most curmudgeonly beer drinker in the holiday spirit. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book that could use a few more recipes
Good book portraying many of the both traditional and non-traditional holiday beers from around the world.Could use a few more recipes for brewing clones or types of holiday beer.Overall, an enjoyable read for any beer enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book about Christmas Beer --- Awesome!
There is no better time of year than Christmas because of all the wonderful beer that becomes available. The book reviews the top 50 best beers and then includes reviews of a number of other Christmas/Winter beers as well.

The book had opportunities to dig more indepth on the different beers and be more descriptive -- but, I'm hard-pressed to criticize any book devoted to Christmas beer.

If you love this type of beer and look forward to this season, I highly recommend this book -- it is a fun read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Decadent Christmas Recipes
This is a really great book of recipes, many of which are so extravagant that you could only get away with making them at Christmastime. (But isn't extravagance what Christmas is all about?) Many other reviewers have complained about the complexity of the recipes or the fact that the recipes did not turn out well. It is important to realize that this is a somewhat advanced cookbook which assumes a certain level of knowledge about cooking. It does not spell out every single step. (One review mentioned that Emeril neglected to explain how to extract vanilla paste from a vanilla bean or temper egg when you add it to a hot mixture). Details such as these, which may seem to be second nature to the experienced cook, are left out of Emeril's explanations, so make sure you feel relatively confident in your cooking technique before embarking on some of the recipes.

I have made a number of recipes in this book, all of which have turned out marvelously. Some of the recipes are so delicious (as well as visually appealing) it really is a pleasure to put them on the table for my family at holiday time. Another nice feature of this book is that it is divided into occasions and menus, so that when you are busy during the holidays you don't have to put too much thought into coming up with a menu of your own. Emeril even includes a shopping list of ingredients at the beginning of each section.

If you are looking for a classic, basic Christmas cookbook this is certainly not it. However, if you are a somewhat experienced cook with a desire to put something a bit unusual and decadent on your Christmas table this year, this book is the one for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it love it love it, Not for everyone.
I absolutly love to cook, have been to culinary school, also not afraid of new things. I have tried most of these recipies and many have become regulars. The smoked salmon terrine although is expensive we normally make on every holiday now. Sugarcane Baked Ham with Spiced Apples and Pears is super. Beef Tenderloin with Fresh Horseradish and Black Pepper Crust was suprizing ly good, I ont like horseradish at all, but it was paired so beautifully in this recipie it was sublime. Jiffy Pop Firecracker Shrimp we make everytime we have shrimp in the house. the Chocolate Chocolate Pudding Cake with Chocolate Ganache, Creole Christmas Trifle, Creole Christmas Fruitcake with Whiskey Sauce and the Banana Cream Pie with Caramel Drizzle and Chocolate Sauces is to die for, however this recipie is written with the assumption you have made custards b4 and know you need to temper it beford adding the hot milk mixture. I have not made the Lobster Cheesecake with Christmas Caviar Sauce but hope to soon. the big boy cookies and the spiced pecans...Ummm yummy, I am soo happy to have bought this book. If you are open to try new things, If you like to occasionally like to indulge and eat like something so decatend and pretend that it is a common thing, this book is definatly for you. Emmeril, you are my hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart--but worth it!
If you're only familiar with Emeril from his TV appearances, this book may surprise you. It lacks the flamboyance and loud flashiness, replacing them with a certain elegance and gourmet style. It includes a Christmas Eve dinner for ten, Emeril's Christmas Day brunch buffet, New Orleans New Year's Eve dinner, a New Year's Day supper family style, the Chef's holiday favorites, and Emeril's "stocking stuffers."

The book is filledwith gorgeous photographs of lavish decorations and settings. They artfully set the mood in this book--one of no expense spared in the interest of fabulous holiday memories. Each section of the book is done as a menu, so that you can make the menu whole or steal individual recipes. None of these menus are quick things, and this book isn't designed for the cook who doesn't like to spend more than a half-hour in the kitchen. Shopping lists are included, as well as wine pairings.

This is not the cookbook for someone on a budget: it calls for such expensive ingredients as caviar, truffles, and huge amounts of fresh raspberries, some of which can be tough to find depending on where you live. The book also assumes at least a little experience with basic cooking techniques--novices shouldn't be starting with a gourmet cookbook using expensive ingredients. Not all of the recipes cost so much, however, and they aren't all complicated; for example, the spiced pecans are extremely inexpensive and easy, and they're so good that we've made them more than 15 times at least (and we don't often repeat recipes). They're so good, in fact, that people request them specially when they come to visit at holidays.

So try the salad of new potatoes and roasted walnuts with warm bacon vinaigrette, or the truffle risotto with parmesan croutons. Make the andouille cheese bread or the white cheddar truffle eggs. Save this book for an occasion when you really want to pull out all the stops, whether it's Christmas or some other important time in your life. The photos alone will inspire you to do great things in the kitchen!

I was overjoyed with the delivery of the book.I purchased it used, at a fantastic price. There the joy ended. The recipes are ones that only a person looking for the completely abnormal meal would like this book.Only the section of Gifts to Make was worth reading. The recipes called for ingredients that are difficult to obtain and mostly of unusual taste.Would have cried if I had paid full price. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Tricky But With Good Ideas--Quite British Though...
This is a charming book, with a fine British pedigree, that takes decorating cakes quite a few steps above canned frosting.Just the clever use of new colors made the book worth it for me.But some ingredients--like castor sugar--no it's not EXACTLY like powdered sugar!--create some translation problems.Don't let the book overwhelm you--study some of the pictures and techniques and retool to make it a little easier on yourself and you will bowl people over with your fabulous pastry skills.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed. No pics. Very plain book.
You would be better buying from some other author. No much to write home about!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Holiday Treats Year Round!
This recipe book is awesome!! The food during the holiday season is my favorite. I love anything with pumpkin, and warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. I love that with these recipes, I can enjoy my favorite seasonal treats all year round, but in a much healthier and "raw" form. Raw Pumpkin Pie..yes please!!! The Holiday Morning Porridge is one of my favorite recipes from the book. It is so filling, flavorful, and delicious any time of the year! I look forward to making the Creamy Dreamy Eggless Nog, "I Can't Believe It's Raw" Pumpkin Pie, Oktoberfest Raw German Chocolate Brownies, Comfort Time Sweet-Brose, and Hazelnut Chocolate Snowballs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Tips for Anytime of the Year
Obviously the holidays are over, but I got this book anyway because I like all of the other books I've gotten from Kristen and I figured the tips for surviving the holidays would be good for any time of year - and they are!Kristen has lots of great tips about setting goals and expectations, planning ahead, how to handle parties, and gift-giving.These tips are definitely useful all the time.Of course, there's some fabulous recipes in here, too.The German Chocolate are so darn good - I think I need to make a double recipe next time!

5-0 out of 5 stars OH YUM!!!
For sure! There is one recipe (among many) that comes to mind when I think of Kristen's Holiday Recipes... RAW German Chocolate Brownies!!!!!!!! OOHHH man!!! I'm a HUGE German Chocolate lover, so when I came across this recipe, I had to make it. It turned out so incredibly delicious and tasted just like the German Chocolate that I remembered (cooked version). I could not believe it! So during the holidays, I was asked to bring the dessert... guess what I brought? YEP!! RAW German Chocolate Brownies! A HUGE hit! The family LOVED them :) all 48 of them!
Simplest and most fun recipes. Kristen knows how to make the most out of the Holidays!! I count on her to have the best RAW/Vegan recipes and she has NEVER let me down :))

4-0 out of 5 stars Great alternative for the holidays and beyond...
I definitely agree about the Pumpkin Pie - it really is out of this world.I have to say, though, that this recipe is best with a high powered professional blender to really get the right creamy and whipped texture. It's still delicious, though. I've had it made both ways-with and without a high-speed blender. And the Pecan Spice cookies are really, really good. You don't have to wait for the holidays for these recipes, but it would make a nice gift for that time of year especially when people are looking for healthier alternatives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All in favor... I
After having seen this book via my library, I ordered myself a copy of this charming, simple and beautiful book, with its wonderful photos and to die for recipes. There is no filler here, so you will get the maximum amount of recipes/ideas in your holiday baking/cooking throughout these pages. The author(s)walks you through set by step so that each recipes will have the end result of divinity at your table. There are prepared menus with main dishes, side dishes, drinks to accompany the food and a dessert with warm drink, to top off the evening.

Your holiday guests may not want to leave you -- That's a good thing.

Happy Holidays

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Holiday Recipe Book
I have had this recipe book for about 5 years, but love it so much that I ordered another one for my son so that he can cook the holiday favorites too. The different types of situations, like Caroler's Buffet, etc with the suggested menus is very helpful. I plan to serve pork crown roast for Christmas day and the presentation is very stunning, with all the side dishes.. I recommend also getting the newer edition of this book also as it has some great ideas on table settings, name tags, gifts, etc

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiration!
This is one of the best cookbooks I own. My husband is a very picky eater and usually I can use just a few recipes from the whole cookbook, but this one clearly stands out. When just browsing through it for the first time, it made my mouth water and I just couldn't wait to make all these goodies.

The recipes are not intimidating and they do not require lots of hard-to-find expensive gourmet products. Some recipes are accompanied by step-by-step instructions, which I especially like.

This book is out of print, so hurry and buy one on Amazon Marketplace. Mine was listed as used, but it was in a perfect condition and at just 3$ it's a steal! Did I mention it is beautifully printed too?

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely& Practical Large Format Holiday Cookbook
This is a really lovely large format book for holiday baking, entertaining, and gifts from the kitchen. It has little, or perhaps no, redundancy from Bon Appetit magazine, so there is plenty for subscribers and non-subscribers to enjoy. The book has 17 chapters. Four chapters address one entire holiday feast each, with each meal in a different style. Fivechapters provide recipes especially suited for other holiday season festivities such as a tree-trimming supper, a dessert buffet, a cocktail party, and an open house. Other chapters are dedicated to specific types of food, rather than entire meals. These include chapters on: breads, cookies and cranberry sauces as well as Christmas puddings, a buche de noel, an elaborate chocolate cake, and a croquembouche, whose chapters include step-by-step illustrated instructions on how to construct these holiday masterpieces. The "Gifts from the Kitchen" chapter offers an array of 22 recipes for cookies, candies, sauces, jams, breads and more that are easy to make and sure to impress. Every recipe isn't accompanied by a photograph, but there are many large color photos throughout the book. The paper is also of very nice quality. "Bon Appetit Christmas" is a worthy addition to the library of any cook and makes a lovely gift for those who like to bake or entertain.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest Holiday book ever published

America's most talented designers and expert needleworkers are busy creating for "The Vanessa-Ann Collection". Selections here include the classic Christmas story, "The Night Before Christmas", which are artistically interpreted in cross-stitch along with sixty-five other original projects for Christmas decorating and gift-giving.

There are cross-stitch stockings and garlands to hang by the chimney with care. Visions of sugarplums to cross-stich the little ones. Pillows, picture frames, and other gift items for St Nicholas's pack, and Christmas wishes to stitch for everyone on your list.

Large easy-to-read graphs make stitching these designs simple enough for a beginner. Measurements are given for the finished size of the stitched pieces in a variety of fabrics, to help you quickly figure the amount of fabric needed.

Beautiful full-color photographs illustrate the innovative color sense for which "The Vanessa-Ann Collection" is well known. To enable you to capture these same colors in your own creations, both DMC and Susan Bates color charts are included.

Full-size patterns, step-by-step instructions, and precise diagrams help you to complete each project exactly as it appears in the photograph. Vanessa-Ann projects are so easy and so quick, you will want to begin cross-stitching now in preparation for this year's visit from St. Nick.

The Vanessa-Ann Collection was started by Jo Packham Buehler and Terrece Beesley Woodruff. In a short time, Vanessa-Ann, with its creative and often whimsical designs, has become a standard in the competitive field of needlework.

Jo Buehler's keen sense of marketing and sense of color have been a lucky combination of talents for the Vanessa-Ann Collection since the very beginning.

Terrece Woodruff is an exceptional artist, who enjoys the challenge of changing her style. Previous experience as adesigner for a major kit company has resulted in her expert ability to implement subtle shadings and to use the textures in floss and fabric to their best advantage.
