Excerpt: Henry Norman Bethune (March 3, 1890 November 12, 1939; Chinese name: ; pinyin: Bái Qiún) was a Canadian physician and medical innovator. Bethune is best known for his service in war time medical units during the Spanish Civil War and with the People's Liberation Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. He developed the first mobile blood-transfusion service in Spain in 1936. A Communist, he wrote that wars were motivated by profits, not principles. Norman Bethune's birth place, now Bethune Memorial HouseDr. Norman Bethune came from a prominent Scottish Canadian family. His great great grandfather, the Reverend John Bethune (17511815), was the family patriarch and established the first Presbyterian Church in Montreal. Norman Bethunes great grandfather, Angus Bethune (17831858), joined the North West Company at an early age and traveled extensively throughout the north western territories, exploring and trading for furs. He eventually reached the Pacific at Fort Astoria, Oregon. He became chief factor of the Lake Huron district for the Hudson's Bay Company after the merger of the rival companies. Upon retirement from the HBC in 1839 he successfully ran for Alderman of Toronto City Council. Normans grandfather, also named Norman (182292), was educated as a doctor at King's College, University of Toronto, and in London, England at Guy's Hospital, graduating in 1848 as a member of the Royal College of Physicians. Upon his return to Canada, he became one of the founders of the Upper Canada School of Medicine, which was incorporated into Trinity College, Toronto and eventually the University of Toronto. Normans father, the Rev. Malcolm Nicolson Bethune, led an uneven...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=89452 ... Read more

Chapters: Franz Borkenau, Julius Deutsch. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 18. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Franz Borkenau (December 15, 1900 May 22, 1957) was an Austrian writer. Borkenau was born in Vienna, Austria, the son of a civil servant. As a university student in Leipzig, his main interests were Marxism and psychoanalysis. Borkenau is known as one of the pioneers of the totalitarianism theory. In 1921, Borkenau joined the Communist Party of Germany and was active as a Comintern agent until 1929. After graduating from the University of Leipzig in 1924, Borkenau moved to Berlin. In the 1920s, Borkenau was described by Richard Löwenthal as a "sincere Marxist" who very much wanted a world revolution. At the end of 1929, Borkenau resigned from both the Comintern and the KPD owing to his personal repulsion and disgust over the way the Communists operated, combined with an increasing horror over Stalinism. Despite his break with Communism, Borkenau remained on the Left and worked as a researcher for the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, Germany. During his time at the Frankfurt Institute, Borkenau was a protégé of Carl Grünberg and his main interest was the relationship between capitalism and ideology. In 1933, the half-Jewish Borkenau fled from Germany and lived at various times in Vienna, Paris and Panama City. In the 1930s, Borkenau was involved in organizing support from abroad for the Neu Beginnen (New Beginnings) underground group, which was working for the overthrow of the Nazi regime. In a series of articles published in 1933-34 in the left-wing German language émigré press, Borkenau defended the Neu Beginnen group as the superior alternative to both the SPD and the KPD. In his 1936 biography of the Italian sociologist Vilfredo Pareto, Borkenau offered up a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=6140353 ... Read more

Excerpt: Pablo Neruda (July 12, 1904 September 23, 1973) was the pen name and, later, legal name of the Chilean writer and politician Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. With his works translated into many languages, Pablo Neruda is considered one of the greatest and most influential poets of the 20th century. He chose his pen name in honour of the famous Czech poet Jan Neruda. Neruda was accomplished in a variety of styles ranging from erotically charged love poems like his collection Twenty Poems of Love and a Song of Despair, surrealist poems, historical epics, and overtly political manifestos. In 1971 Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once called him "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language." On July 15, 1945, at Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, Brazil, he read to 100,000 people in honor of Communist revolutionary leader Luís Carlos Prestes. During his lifetime, Neruda occupied many diplomatic posts and served a stint as a senator for the Chilean Communist Party. When Conservative Chilean President González Videla outlawed communism in Chile in 1948, a warrant was issued for Neruda's arrest. Friends hid him for months in a house basement in the Chilean port of Valparaíso. Later, Neruda escaped into exile through a mountain pass near Maihue Lake into Argentina. Years later, Neruda was a close collaborator to socialist President Salvador Allende. When...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7673195 ... Read more

Excerpt: Eric Arthur Blair (25 June 1903 21 January 1950), better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English author and journalist. His work is marked by keen intelligence and wit, a profound awareness of social injustice, an intense, revolutionary opposition to totalitarianism, a passion for clarity in language and a belief in democratic socialism. Considered perhaps the 20th century's best chronicler of English culture, as well as fiction and polemical journalism, Orwell wrote literary criticism and poetry. He is best known for the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) and the satirical novella Animal Farm (1945). His Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences as a volunteer on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War, and his numerous essays are also widely acclaimed. Orwell's influence on culture, popular and political, continues. Several of his neologisms, along with the term Orwellian, now a byword for any draconian or manipulative social phenomenon or concept inimical to a free society, have entered th...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=11891 ... Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Konstantin "Koa" Popovi ( ) (14 March 1908 - 20 October 1992) was a communist volunteer in the Spanish Civil War, 1937-1939 and Divisional Commander of the First Proletarian Division in Josip Broz Tito's Partisan army. Sometimes he was known as "the man who saved YPA" because he broke trough the German lines during the crucial Battle of Sutjeska and saved Tito and Yugoslav People's Army. Popovi came from a prosperous Belgrade family and at university studied philosophy. After university he moved to Paris where he mixed with the Left Bank world of poets, writers, artists and intellectuals. From this youthful indulgence he moved to involvement with the then illegal Yugoslav Communist Party. In Paris there was a center run by Comintern and headed by Tito which was used to feed volunteers from the Balkans to the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. Popovi was drafted through this center along with a select group of Party members. Popovi fought with Spanish Republican forces and not the International Brigades, holding the rank of artillery captain. At the close of the Spanish Civil War Popovi escaped through France and made his way back to Yugoslavia. In 1940, as a reserve officer in the Royal Yugoslav Army he was mobilised and told by his Colonel to watch out for subversive activities within the regiment. After the surrender of the Royal Yugoslav Army to the German Army in April 1941, Popovi organised the Kosmaj detachment during the rising in Serbia. On the formation of the first Proletarian Brigade, Popovi became its commander, and subsequently commanding the First Proletarian Division. During ...http://booksllc.net/?id=1681907 ... Read more
