Excerpt: Ture Nerman (18 May 1886, Norrköping 7 October 1969) was a Swedish socialist. As a journalist and author, he was a well-known political activist in his time. He also wrote poems and songs. Nerman was a vegetarian and a strict teetotaler. Alcoholism was a major social problem in Sweden in the early 20th century, and Nerman considered alcohol being a drug that made the working class passive instead of fighting for better conditions. Ture Nerman had younger twin brothers, the artist Einar Nerman and the archeologist Birger Nerman. Nerman grew up in a middle class family in the working-class, industrial city of Norrköping. His father owned a bookstore in the city and had married an employee who was many years younger: she became the mother of Ture and his two younger brothers. As a boy, Ture Nerman loved reading the books at his fathers store, especially western books about cowboys and Indians. Nerman graduated from the Norrköping gymnasium (secondary school) in 1903 at the age of 17. On the graduation day he took his school bible and tossed it in the Motala ström river. In his autobiography, Nerman describes this as his first revolutionary action. Some years later when he was asked by the Swedish Social Democratic Party's leader Hjalmar Branting what had made him a socialist, Nerman answered that it had been the questioning of religion. After graduation he moved to study at Uppsala University. The year 1905 saw both a revolution in Russia and revolutionary development in Scandinavia as Norway declared itself independent from the rule of the Swedish crown. These changes radicalized Ture Nerman politically to the left...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2173813 ... Read more

Excerpt: Medieval16th century 17th century18th century 19th century20th century Contemporary André Malraux DSO (3 November 1901 23 November 1976) was a French author, adventurer and statesman. Malraux was born in Paris during 1901, the son of Fernand-Georges Malraux and Berthe Lamy (Malraux). His parents separated during 1905 and eventually divorced. He was raised by his mother and maternal grandmother, Berthe and Adrienne Lamy in the small town of Bondy. His father, a stockbroker, committed suicide in 1930. Andre had Tourette's Syndrome during his childhood, resulting in motor and vocal tics. He wrote for the magazine Action. He made money editing with publisher Simon Kra, limited edition books, that were popular as an investment against inflation. Some of these books included Marquis de Sade's Les Amis de crime, and Le Bordel de Venise. At the age of 21, Malraux left for Cambodia with his new wife Clara Goldschmidt. In Cambodia, he undertook an exploratory expedition into the Cambodian jungle. On his return he was arrested by French colonial authorities for removing bas-reliefs from Banteay Srei, a Khmer temple that had been discovered 9 years earlier by a French archeologist. Malraux later incorporated the episode into his second novel La Voie Royale. Malraux became very critical of the French colonial authorities in Indochina, and during 1925, helped to organize the Young Annam League and founded a newspaper L'Indochine. On his return to France, he published The Temptation of the West (1926), which had the forma...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=42691 ... Read more

Excerpt: Charles I (19 November 1600 30 January 1649) was the second son of James VI of Scots and I of England. He was King of England, King of Scotland and King of Ireland from 27 March 1625 until his execution. Charles engaged in a struggle for power with the Parliament of England, attempting to obtain royal revenue whilst Parliament sought to curb his Royal prerogative which Charles believed was divinely ordained. Many of his English subjects opposed his actions, in particular his interference in the English and Scottish Churches and the levying of taxes without parliamentary consent which grew to be seen as those of a tyrannical absolute monarch. Religious conflicts permeated Charles' reign. His failure to successfully aid Protestant forces during the Thirty Years' War, coupled with such actions as marrying a Catholic princess, generated deep mistrust concerning the king's dogma. Charles further allied himself with controversial religious figures, such as the ecclesiastic Richard Montagu, and William Laud, whom Charles appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. Many of Charles' subjects felt this brought the Church of England too close to the Catholic Church. Charles' later attempts to force religious reforms upon Scotland led to the Bishops' Wars, strengthened the position of the English Parliament and helped precipitate the king's downfall. Charles' last years were marked by the English Civil War, in which he fought the forces...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7426 ... Read more

Excerpt: Franz Borkenau (December 15, 1900 May 22, 1957) was an Austrian writer. Borkenau was born in Vienna, Austria, the son of a civil servant. As a university student in Leipzig, his main interests were Marxism and psychoanalysis. Borkenau is known as one of the pioneers of the totalitarianism theory. In 1921, Borkenau joined the Communist Party of Germany and was active as a Comintern agent until 1929. After graduating from the University of Leipzig in 1924, Borkenau moved to Berlin. In the 1920s, Borkenau was described by Richard Löwenthal as a "sincere Marxist" who very much wanted a world revolution. At the end of 1929, Borkenau resigned from both the Comintern and the KPD owing to his personal repulsion and disgust over the way the Communists operated, combined with an increasing horror over Stalinism. Despite his break with Communism, Borkenau remained on the Left and worked as a researcher for the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt, Germany. During his time at the Frankfurt Institute, Borkenau was a protégé of Carl Grünberg and his main interest was the relationship between capitalism and ideology. In 1933, the half-Jewish Borkenau fled from Germany and lived at various times in Vienna, Paris and Panama City. In the 1930s, Borkenau was involved in organizing support from abroad for the Neu Beginnen (New Beginnings) underground group, which was working for the overthrow of the Nazi regime. Excerpt: Egon Erwin Kisch (April 29, 1885, Prague March 31, 1948, Prague) was a Czechoslovak writer and journalist, who wrote in German. He was noted for his development of literary reportage and his opposition to Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime. Kisch was born into a wealthy Sephardic German-speaking Jewish family in Prague, at that time part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and began his journalistic career as a reporter for the Bohemia, a Prague German language newspaper, in 1906. His early work is characterised by an interest in crime and the lives of the poor of Prague, taking Jan Neruda, Emile Zola and Charles Dickens's Sketches by Boz as his models. His most notable story of this period was his uncovering of the spy scandal involving Alfred Redl. At the outbreak of World War I, Kisch was called up for military service in the Austrian army. He fought on the front-line in Serbia and the Carpathians and his war-time experiences were later recorded in Schreib das auf, Kisch! (1929). He was briefly imprisoned in 1916 for publishing reports from the front that criticised the Austrian military's conduct of the war, but nonetheless later served in the army's press quarters along with fellow writers Franz Werfel and Robert Musil. The war radicalised Kisch. He deserted in October 1918 as the war came to an end and played a leading role in the abortive left-wing revolution in Vienna in November of that year. Werfel's novel Barbara oder die Frömmigkeit (1929) portrays the events of this period and Kisch was the inspiration for one of the novel's characters. Although the revolution failed, in 1919, Kisch became a founding member of the Austrian Communist Party and remained ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=976525 ... Read more

Excerpt:Bill Gannon (died 1965) was a well-known militant of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and later a leading member of the Communist Party of Ireland . IRA career and the O'Higgins Assassination Gannon had fought in the Irish War of Independence . In the Irish Civil War he took the anti-treaty side and was among the force which seized the Four Courts in Dublin - the act which set off the civil war. After the defeat of his side he spent a considerable time under internment, together with numerous others. He was completely unreconciled to the victory of the "Free Staters ", and together with two fellow-detainees - Archie Doyle and Timothy Coughlin - took part in forming a secret "venegeance grouping". The three vowed that once free of imprisonment they would take revenge on their opponents, whom they considered traitors to the Irish cause. Most such private revenge pacts were broken up by the IRA leadership when it reorganised following 1924, but Gannon and his two fellow conspirators persisted and carried through their deadly aim. The act which first made Gannon (and the two others) well-known was the assassination of Justice Minister Kevin O'Higgins . On July 10, 1927, the three surprised O'Higgins on the Booterstown Avenue side of Cross Avenue in Blackrock , County Dublin and shot him down. O'Higgins was especially hated by IRA members for having ordered the executions of seventy-seven of their fellows during the Civil War, an act for which he outspokenly took responsibility and refused to express any remorse. Moreover... ... Read more
