Product Description
The Tudor era (1485-1603) was one of the most culturally significant periods in history. Under three generations of Tudor rulers, the era witnessed the advent of humanism, the birth of the Reformation, and the rise of the British Empire. The literature of the period is marked by complexity of thought and form and reflects the political, religious, and cultural changes of the era. This reference book surveys the literature of Tudor England. Included are alphabetically arranged entries for nearly 100 authors who wrote between 1485 and 1603. Some figures covered are widely taught, such as Shakespeare, Donne, and Spenser. Others are less well known, such as Edward Fairfax and Abraham Fraunce. The work includes entries for notable women writers of the period, many of whom have been neglected until recent years. Also included are entries for continental writers such as Ariosto, Tasso, Calvin, and Erasmus, whose writings were influential in England. Entries are written by expert contributors and contain valuable bibliographies of primary and secondary sources. ... Read more

Product Description
Blending a flair for textual nuance with theoretical engagement, Theaters of Desire not only contributes to our understanding of the most influential form of early Chinese song-drama in local and international cultural contexts, but adds a Chinese perspective to the scholarship on print culture, authorship, and the regulatory discourses of desire. The book argues that, particularly between 1550 and 1680, Chinese elite editors rewrote and printed early plays and songs, so-called Yuan-dynasty zaju and sanqu, to imagine and embody new concepts of authorship, readership and desire, an interpretation that contrasts starkly with the national and racially-oriented reception of song-drama developed by European critics after 1735 and subsequently modified by Japanese and Chinese critics after 1897. By analyzing the critical and material facets of the early song and play tradition across different historical periods and cultural settings, Theaters of Desire presents a compelling case study of literary canon formation.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction To Classical Comedy
Robert W. Corrigan has complied a wonderful balance of Greek and Roman comedies. The collection is ideal for anyone interested in an overview of classical comedy or wishing to explore the roots of modern comedy.

Aristophanes' "Lysistrata" and "The Birds," andMenander's "The Grouch" represent the Greek plays."TheMenaechmi" (sometimes called 'The Brother's Menaechmi') and"Mostellaria" (sometimes called 'The Haunted House' or 'TheGhost')" by Plautus and "The Self Tormentor" by Terencerepresent the Roman plays.

The plays themselves are a wonderful study ofcomedy from it's dramatic origins to the Roman's translations of Greek"New Comedy."Students of Shakespeare and renaissance drama willfind this book especially useful as "The Menaechmi" is the sourceof Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors" and plays like "TheGrouch" and "The Self Tormentor" greatly influenced theFrench comic playwright, Jean-Baptiste Moliere.

The introductions scribedby Corrigan are outstanding.A master of ancient drama, he has a passionthat creeps into all his essays.Unfortunately, the introductions by thetranslators sometimes fail to relate to the boarder subject of comedy andleave a little to be desired.

Regarding the translations themselves, fourdifferent authors have translated the six plays and some are better thanothers.Walter Kerr's translation of "The Birds" is the best ofthe collection.Palmer Bovie's translations of the three Roman plays aresolid and reflect Plautus' word-play well (which also influencedShakespeare).

My only criticism of the book is that some of theintroductions are now dated by references to several Hollywood comedies andBroadway plays that might be obscure unless you have a background in thesesubjects. However, the book is for the plays themselves and the playsthemselves are delightful.Overall, I recommend this collection asintroduction to ancient comedy. ... In this rich collection of Sanskrit verse, the late Daniel Ingalls provides English readers with a wide variety of poetry from the vast anthology of an eleventh-century Buddhist scholar.Although the style of poetry presented here originated at the royal courts, Ingalls shows how it was adapted to all aspects of life, and came to address issues as diverse as love, sex, heroes, nature, and peace.More than thirty years after its original publication, Sanskrit Poetry continues to be the main resource for all interested in this multifaceted and elegant tradition. ... I am compelled to respond to the previous review suggesting a zero rating.Let's start with a few facts.Daniel H.H. Ingalls may very well have been the greatest Sanskritist of the 20th century.Harvard's Wales Professor for more than thirty oddyears, he mentored more than he wrote but his fine scholarship in Indology is considered among the greatest efforts of our age, including this beautiful collection from the Subhasitaratnakosa.I would recommend you ignore the maglinantly ignorant, impenetrably stupid review above and read this as one of the most authentic and valuable contributions to Sanskrit literature in translation currently available. ... Product Description
In the Shadows of Divine Perfection provides an examination of Derek Walcott's Omeros(1990)- the St. Lucian poet's longest work, and the piece that secured his Nobel Laureate-that reveals the deep-seated bond between the root narratives of ancient Greece to the cultural products and practices of the contemporary Caribbean. This book presents the first detailed reading of Walcott's highly controversial attempt to craft a Caribbean master narrative. This book also presents an overview of the poem's ideological orientation and a far-reaching critique of current postcolonial theory. Lance Callahan engages some of the most vexing problems of authenticity by reading Walcott's work alongside ancient Greek literature and culture. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The Price is Wrong!
$52.00 for a Kindle version of this book is just WRONG.There is no paper. There is no stocking fee. There is no handling.I will not pay $52.00 for someones opinion of a book and if you do not have a Kindle and are paying over $100.00 you are out of your mind!

1-0 out of 5 stars Routledge should be ashamed of the price
This appears to be an important book about a fascinating poem. But the price, $75 for a short book, is an insult to people who love poetry. It assumes that only academics or people who have access to a university library should be able to read this book. I am going to avoid buying books from Routledge as much as possible until they rethink their pricing.

I hope the author continues to work and finds a new publisher, one that will price books so that the general public can buy them.

Omeros itself is a wonderfully deep and constantly changing poem, worth rereading. ... Read more

Product Description
Chaucer was a keen observer of the lives of women with a remarkable ability to see beyond his culture's preconceptions concerning their proper roles. Hallissy's lively and literate study traces Chaucer's female characterizations against a background of medieval rules and common assumptions governing women to determine where he adhered to or departed from the behavioral norms. Applying insights from the works of modern social historians of the Middle Ages and ranging widely in sources from the visual arts, civil and canon law, homiletics, theology, architecture, fashion history, and medicine, Hallissy illuminates the preconceptions with which Chaucer's original audience would have encountered his work and brings her findings to bear on a close analysis of the text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Festival of Greek Poetry.
This edition is not a book but a library. It shows us the almost uncountable amount of writers who published in Antiquity but who are unknown by most of the readers. As in all Loeb Editions the original Greek text is included alongside the translations. The notes on the text - both Greek and translations - are conveniently placed at the end of the page.

Of the papyri found in Egypt which have yielded fragments large and small of ancient literary authors, in this volume III is offered Greek poetry. From tragedy, 5th-4th centuries BC, are included fragments of 2 plays (one a satyr play) by Aeschylos , of 5 by Sophocles (two of them satyric including more than 300 lines of the 'Ichneutai', 'Searches'); of 10 by Euripides (including nearly 350 lines of 'Hypsipyle'); of one by Ion. From Old Comedy, 5th century, we have fragments of one play each of Epicharmus, Cratinus, Pherecrates, Eupolis, and Plato, and some fragments of Aristhophanes.

From Middle Comedyand New Comedy, 4th and 3rd centuries, are 26 items including at least 3 by Menander and one each by Philemon, Timocles, and Straton . From mimes there are a fragment of Sophron and 6 anonymous , including 112 lines of clownish doings by the Indian Ocean. Product Description
Carlo Ferdinando Russo's acclaimed work examines Aristophanes' comedies as plays intended for the stage--not the page. Russo's in-depth philological analysis of the plays is founded on an ever present perception of the realities of Greek theatre. He shows how deviations in the text can often be explained with reference to the actual competitions they were written for. He also considers the invention of printing as a cause of root changes in the nature of drama: the modern reader is inclined to see Aristophanes as an author of texts for reading, rather than of fluid libretti for performance. First published in Italy in 1962, it is now finally available in English and much updated. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume investigates various exegetical possibilities in Christian Latin poetry during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. In the Latin West poetry was mainly associated with the powerful pagan tradition of writers like Vergil and Ovid, and by many poetry was considered to tell lies and provide mere entertainment potentially corrupting the soul. Therefore, Christians initially had reservations about this genre and believed it to be incompatible with Christian worship, literacy and intellectual activity. In practice, however, forms of specifically Christian poetry developed from the end of the third century onwards; theoretical reconciliations were developed around 400 A.D. This collection examines specimens of Christian poetry from "Juvencus" (the first biblical epicist shortly after 300) up to the thirteenth century. Its particular usefulness lies in the combination of literary theory and hermeneutics, close readings of the texts and new readings on a sound philological basis. ... Read more

Product Description
The so-called travels of Sir John Mandeville to the Holy Land, India and Cathay were immensely popular throughout Europe during the late medieval period and were translated into nine different languages. This is a detailed study of the audiences of Mandeville's "Book", with particular emphasis on its reception in England and France from the time the Book appeared in the 1350s to the mid-16th century. The multiple ways in which audiences interpreted the work, depending on wider social and cultural contexts, are analysed thematically, under the headings of pilgrimage, geography, romance, history and theology, and contrasted with what can be learned of the author's intentions. The book is illustrated with images taken from both manuscript and early printed editions: in her study of these and the marginal notes, Rosemary Tzanaki shows their importance for seeing what readers found of interest and demonstrates how medieval European citizens viewed the world outside Europe. ...
