3-0 out of 5 stars Not Quite As Described, But Made Right
The book was described as new, but came damaged; the binding was coming undone. When speaking with the seller about it, they said it was fine when they sent it and that they had "only used it for one semester" at school... which doesn't really scream "new" to me. The seller gave back a good portion of our money to make the sell right, though, so I would be willing to use this seller again. They were quick to fix the issue and very kind about it.

1-0 out of 5 stars A parent's review
My son was assigned this book in college. I was surprised that a professor would actually assign a book by such an infamous and unrepentant terrorist (especially one so well-known in the news lately for his connection with Barack Obama) and not feel that this choice of sole assigned text was at least questionable. (Is this really the best example to be found of a good, inspiring, introductory teaching book? Or did it just reflect the instructor's political agenda?) I was curious as to what my son's reaction would be, and was interested to discover that when the class was over, my son was disgusted by the entire experience. He said the class, while rife with an air of political correctness inhibiting honest discussion, was ridiculously simplistic; the assignments were on a par with his middle school courses, and a waste of time. He had gotten the impression that prospective teachers must enter an educational path where the curriculum is definitely "dumbed down" and definitely politicized. As for Ayres' book, he said he was sorry he had had to spend $18 on it and was looking forward to burning it.

I reminded him that Americans don't burn books, they read them and write reviews, which I then volunteered to do. However, I could not bring myself to finish the book, not even to complete a dutiful review. So take my remaining comments as you will:

This book does nothing to hide the fact that it is a polemical screed, obsessed with the author's odd notions of the politics of race and a painfully studied multiculturalism. It is riddled with airy maunderings intended to be intimate and poetic (I suppose), but succeeding only in being squishily written and poorly organized. It is painful to read this book for many reasons, but mostly because it is, right from the get-go, bald-faced in its aims to brainwash and to subvert the educational process and profession. The author does not intend to truly educate children, or their teachers, but to indoctrinate them all into becoming activists for the political ends approved of by William Ayers--and evidently some unknown number of other college professors as well.

Two other much more helpful and inspiring books for beginning student teachers which might better have been assigned are Jay Mathews' _Work Hard. Be Nice._ and Doug Lemov's _Teach Like a Champion_. See also _The Schools We Need and Why We Don't Have Them_ by E.D. Hirsch, Jr. and _Real Education_ by Charles Murray.

5-0 out of 5 stars Glorifies teaching
This book is surprisingly personal as it explores Ayers' own transformations and decisions as an educator.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what Mr. Ayres should be famous for.
This book is an inspiration. Mr. Ayres has an understanding of children and teaching that is inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for Vets and Newbies
I picked up this book because when Mr. Ayers was being called a "known terrorist" during the presidential campaign, I wanted to see if all the fuss was justified, or merely trumped up by the opposing team. When I found out he was an educator like myself, I had to dig deeper. Reading this book makes whatever he did 40 years ago seem irrelevant (especially in light of the passions of the times) compared to the dedicated, compassionate teacher he has been for most of his life. This book reminded me over and over again of the reasons I became a teacher in the first place, and renewed my commitment to always place the nurturing of growing intellects and emotions before the increasingly dehumanizing requirements of federal, state, and district guidelines that squeeze the spirit out of energetic and creative teachers and students. It should be required reading for aspiring and beginning teachers, and for those of us with more experience, I recommend it as a much needed shot in the arm to keep us teaching with the same hope and vitality with which we all stepped off into this honorable profession. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Opened my eyes
There were things in this book that had never crossed our minds.A great book to have in your collection and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
As the wife of a husband with ADHD and mother of a son with ADHD, I have struggled for years like many other reviewers to do what is right for "my boys". Sandra Reif offers some very encouraging and helpful strategies in this books. I think the key point that all books on ADHD need to make is that each person with ADHD is an individual with unique talents and gifts, and we need to view these in a positive light. Anyone who has struggled with this needs to read a book called GIFTED by Kirk Martin. It's actually a novel about a young man with ADD who comes to understand that the "disorder" parents and teachers had considered negative all his life actually turns out to be a gift. I think you can read a summary at kirkmartinbooks.com, it presents an entirely new way to view the ones you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough strategies for teaching ADHD children
I bought this book after I heard Sandra speak at an ADHD convention... A very thorough book on how to teach ADHD children. If you are going to buy just one book that says it all this is it...

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Reference for School, or Real Life
This book made me wish that ALL reference books were written this clearly. Whether your looking to use this book to do a presentation in school, a teacher looking for help on teaching ADHD students, or have an ADHD child of your own, this is for you. It's a no non sense, straight forward guide to ADHD. It includes the causes, symptoms, treatment suggestions, and more. It even goes into specific strategies that teachers can use in the classroom.

The best part about it is that its broken down into detailed chapters and sections, making it easy for yout to find EXACTLY what your looking for. It's also written in VERY understandable terms. This is not a medical book, it's a for the average person. This book is an unbeleiveably well written guide to one of the most common learning disabilities of today. If your looking for a great reference, look no further, you've found the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite Theoretically Sound
This 'manual' presents a technical and philosophical overview of the complex array of variables that factor into effective teaching of the ADHD child. The author has compassion as well as insight into the children, who often face rejection and failure. The co-occuring low self esteem can carry over a lifetime.A variety of methodologies specific to learning domains are very helpful for diagnostic purposes and lesson planning. As a principal and mental health administrator, I have this book well-placed on my shelf. I refer to it often and occasionally lend it to my staff who are searching for help with a specific child.

Glancing back at the chapters as I prepared this review, I was actually astounded at the sophisticated details embedded there. In particular I think the information that supports the "multi-sensory" approach is greatly needed. The amount of times we write "multi-sensory" activities just because it fits in an IEP is amazing. My own experience with teachers is that they basically have a very limited understanding of the neurological underpinings of sensory and perceptual limitations.

My only reservation about the book is that despite its layout, it actually is fairly theoretical. I think that when a teacher reaches for it, he or she may be looking for some more 'lesson planning' ideas and tend to gloss over the more comprehensive information. I definitely recommend the book for special education teachers who are genuinely interested in a more in-depth review, as well asfor purposes of diagnostic and prescriptive planning. I also recommend it for administrators who are involved in staff development or individual supervision.
The only other concern I have is that despite the amount of information about the medication questions, it does not include enough about the tomes of research that is available to support augmenting behavioral programs with psychopharmacology. A teacher should check with his or her supervisor to gain access to this data so that they can respond to questions on this highly charged subject with sophisticated and thus helpful answers. ... Product Description
A volume in Literacy, Language, and LearningSeries Editor Patricia Ruggiano Schmidt,Our goal in writing this book was to validate teachers for strong efforts in their life's work. We often observeteachers' frustrations with what they perceive to be a multitude of different "hot topics" in education that theymust attend to now, but which they expect to come and go, like the last "hot topics." So, we wanted to helpreaders see similarities between many of these "hot topics"-differentiation, multiple intelligences, culturallyresponsive teaching, "brain-friendly" strategies, authentic assessment, and ethical classroom management-which we feel are not "flashes in the pan." And we trust that serious practitioners will not oversimplify thefindings of neuroscientists and their application to education. Reading studies and books by scientists, a numberof which are user-friendly, can help ensure that teachers separate the hype from credible information. We have seen this professionally judiciousapproach in the work of graduate students (Kolinski, 2007) in adopting "brain-friendly" strategies. We have intentionally packed both theoretical/research-based and practical information in this book because professional educators want to know whythey should use certain approaches, models, and strategies. In turn, as professionals, we should be able to explain why we teach the way we do-not tojustify, but to educate others about our knowledge-based, reflective, decision-making processes and the impact on student learning. Thus, it is importantto read Chapter 1 because it lays a foundation. Each succeeding chapter (2-6) has unique and compelling twists and turns-chock full of ideas to use or to adapt. It is possible to gain lots of ideas, processes, and strategies from reading and implementing (or adapting) even one of the unit chapters, or a part of it. While some of the units are explicitlyabout literacy, others focus on content using reading, writing, speaking, and listening as critical in the learning process. Thus, literacy skills arereinforced and strengthened. Additionally, some of our colleagues and public school partners havegiven us feedback that they wanted to implement some of the units and activities themselves. So, feelfree to use this book for self-exploration and professional development. ... Read more

Product Description
This book addresses aspects of substitute teaching that are essential to making your teaching experience a worthwhile one.For some reason, however, many colleges, universities and professors don't teach from this perspective.Sometimes it takes a person looking from the outside in, someone whose mind has not already been filled with opinions and dogmas to offer a fresh perspective on issues that need to be addressed. This book provides a fresh perspective on the potential solutions to problems that substitute teachers face everyday.Renee was probably the least educated, least experienced substitute teacher in the school district. In fact, she had no formal education or experience in the field of education.Yet, she was a highly coveted substitute teacher in the school district she taught for.She handled and taught the students so well that well-educated and experienced teachers asked for her advice on how they could manage their classes. If you ask some of the best substitute teachers (and teachers for that matter) how they are able to effectively manage their classroom and enjoy their teaching experience, many will tell you that they have used the concepts that have been outlined in this book. The author defines what it means to be a substitute teacher and outlines a holistic approach to substitute teaching that requires the teacher to consider his/her responsibility to their students which goes beyond teaching textbook material. In order to teach textbook material, students must understand the significance of being at school first. If this foundation is not laid, then in many situations, teaching textbook material is futile, if not impossible. In order for the student to understand his/her purpose at school, they should understand that they have a purpose in life and these formative years are their opportunity to discover that purpose.Providing this understanding of purpose will empower even the worst of students to go on to be productive members of society. The students can only go as far as teachers themselves have gone.As a result, if the teacher has not discovered his/her purpose for being alive, it is impossible for him/her to empower his/her students to discover theirs. The author therefore challenges teachers everywhere to first discover their purpose and who they were created to be, so that they can challenge their students to do the same. The author also equips substitute teachers with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively manage the best and worst classrooms. She reminds the teacher that teaching textbook material is very important and should be put in proper perspective so that they can lead their students to become successful, not just in school, but in life. The role of the substitute teacher should never be trivialized and when you know your role and operate in that role, you can have a tremendous impact on those you teach, even if you are in contact with them for only less than one day. ...
