The philosophy behind his points is mostly common sense, but still valid.My problem with the book was that I couldn't put much faith in someone who is writing an education book, but whose spelling and grammar is atrocious.Nearly every page had an in correct use of there, their or they're, your or you're, hear or here.I started to think the last lesson was going to be to teach the kids not to rely on spellcheck, but that didn't happen. ... Wisdom for new (and not-so-new) teachers
A wonderful thought provoking look at all of the intricacies of teaching. Denis Hayes has used his many years of experience to create a great resource for all of those involved in teaching.Whilst he focusses on the new teacher embarking on a career in teaching in the UK, his explanations, suggestions and examples make it just as relevant to teachers everywhere. He poses questions to be considered and gives actions to be followed, to help ensure that teaching is a positive and successful experience for all concerned. The art of teaching is based primarily upon the science of psychology. In this book the authors have sought to make clear the principles of psychology which are involved in teaching, and to show definitely their application in the work of the classroom. The book has been written in language as free from technical terms as is possible.

In a discussion of the methods of teaching it is necessary to consider the ends or aims involved, as well as the process. The authors have, on this account, included a chapter on the work of the teacher, in which is discussed the aims of education.

The success or failure of the work of a teacher is determined by the changes which are brought to pass in the children who are being taught. This book, therefore, includes a chapter on the measurement of the achievements of children.

Throughout the book the discussion of the art of teaching is always modified by an acceptance upon the part of the writers of the social purpose of education.

The treatment of each topic will be found to be based upon investigations and researches in the fields of psychology and education which involve the measurement of the achievements of children and of adults under varying conditions.

Wherever possible, the relation between the principle of teaching laid down and the scientific inquiry upon which it is based is indicated.

Any careful study of the mental life and development of children reveals at the same time the unity and the diversity of the process involved.

Teachers of Special Eduction Students with SEVERE BEHAVIOR NEEDS, GET THIS BOOK!
I would highly recommend this book to all teachers who work with students with emotional disturbances/behavior improvement/emotionally handicapped/severely emotionally disturbed/but not students with Asperger's, High Functioning Autism, or Autism.The author actually gives true life-experiences what she has endured as a special education teacher of children with emotional problems.It's a great resource for these teachers, and even secondary teachers of these students will get some ideas on how to set up the classroom for instruction too.If you are a teacher of students with defiant and violent behavior (not including autistic spectrum disorders), this is the best book i've read.I highly recommend this book.
