I just inherited a young cockatiel from a friend, and I have never owned one before, so I wanted to do some research. This was actually the second book I had bought and thought it was very well written and more helpful than the first.I really enjoyed the layout and information in simple, easy-to-understand format. If you may be considering one of these little rascals, this can really give you a good foundation for the care and love of them. ... Product Description
Why do we put up with our finicky felines? They won't pull a sled, lead the blind, bite burglars, or fetch the paper. But love them we do, and in this collection of feline funnies, New Yorker cartoonist Leo Cullum helps us understand why.

Following on the success of his two previous collections of animal cartoons, Cockatiels for Two investigates the truth beneath the cat's inscrutable exterior. Languid elegance or sheer laziness? Do they return our love, or are they merely seeking easy food and a warm body? Cullum addresses all this and more in 113 delightful cartoons. "I'm expected for dinner around seven," says one cat to another. "Other than that I'm completely free." A political cat declares, "I'm totally bipartisan. I eat as many birds as I do mice." And, getting at perhaps the feline's true essence, Rene Decat philosophizes, "I purr therefore I am." An ideal gift for cat owners, cat lovers, and anyone whose path has been crossed by a black cat, this entertaining volume will leave readers meowing for more.AUTHOR BIO: Leo Cullum, a recently retired commercial airline pilot, has published hundreds of cartoons in The New Yorker, Barron's, the Harvard Business Review, and many other publications. His work has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Cullum lives in Malibu, California. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hysterically funny!Great Gift Book!!!!
Another triumph for beloved NEW YORKER MAGAZINE cartoonist, Leo Cullum.
Each witty, well drawn cartoon is a humorous take on the human condition...not an attack on cockatiels....lighten up people. It's a book of humor!!!
A perfect mate to his previous cartoon books. SCOTCH and TOILET WATER, TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD and COCKATIELS for TWO make the perfect trilogy for gift giving!
Even the titles are so clever.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cocatiel heaven
This book answered almost all of my questions about the behavior of these interesting birds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Groundbreaking
I got this book for my dad for Christmas. It's pretty cute and any cockatiel lover will get a kick out of the illustrations and some of the questions. Some of the stuff is interesting (I didn't know they were afraid of the dark), but a lot of it is just common sense (why does my bird whistle more than it talks?).I'm glad I bought it and most of it is pretty interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for New Bird Owners
New to Cockatiels, this book was funny and informative. Recommend this book for anyone beginning to learn about these fascinating birds

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun Book, forNew owners of Cockatiels
Hi! I totally agree with the person who said something like: a fun little book with not a lot of information in it...that's why I was surprised some people thought it had lots of info.
I think if you have these birds as I do and did for 6 mo. before getting this book, you will pretty much already know at least 75% of this books info.Still a very cute gift to give a new cockatiel owner. Also, after I bought it here,I saw it cheaper at other stores...sorry amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally I understand!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very informative reference book

I've had a pair of cockatiels for the past two years. They are very easy to look after, and like all pets, they crave attention.I bought this book - and others - because I came home one evening to a pair of eggs at the bottom of the cage!!!! I was totally unprepared, and needed some guidance. This book didn't disappoint.

The author is matter-of-fact and to the point, and the advice is easy to follow, even for a novice like me.Thanks to this book, I realise that I am on the right track. Now all I need to do is add more veggies to my angel's diet and they'll continue to be their best at all times

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for cockatiel owners
I am a recent cockatiel owner and this book helped answer many of my questions.I refer to the book often and it has been invaluable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good basic information
Though I have owned three Budgies before, I had never previously owned a Cockatiel,(I recently bought two) so I bought this book to learn a little more about them. It was a good, basic book, but I would not recommend this book to a seasoned owner, as they would almost most certainley not learn anything new. I would, however, recommend this book to a first time bird owner, as they would learn a great deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cockatiels(Complete Pet Owner's Manuals)
I'm a new cockatiel owner my husband got it for me for a birthday present actually early birthday present. I have read and re read the book over and over again. I still enjoy it.Also I look for information on cockatiels on the internet so I feel pretty well set on information I need.I got the bird on August 13,2001 from a breeder in town. He's a emerald cockatiel which is a recessive gene mutation. His name is Tristan Jade and I call him "Jade" for short.I have really enjoyed him tremendously :)Cockatiels are amazing birds! This book has all the things I needed to know.If you miss something then you can look it up in the index at the back of the book or read the pages over. You will see something you missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for beginners
If you've owned cockatiels for a long time, this book is not for you.But if you're just beginning, like me, this book gives a great overview of all the things you need to consider when buying and taking care of a cockatiel. Product Description

When her old friend Karen drops by with her two-year-old son, Meg Langslow reluctantly agrees to mind him for a few hours. The next morning, when Karen is still MIA, Meg retraces her friend’s footsteps and starts to suspect that her disappearance is linked to at least one serious crime. Has Karen been killed or kidnapped? Is she on the run? What’s the story with her ex-husband Jasper? The police don’t seem to care…So now it’s up to Meg to crack the case—no small task when you consider she’s also dealing with a house full of reptilian guests courtesy of Dad and Grandpa, thinking about starting a family of her own with new husband Michael, and chasing after a two-year-old who doesn’t understand that the bad guys might be after him next.

5-0 out of 5 stars Less family, more Meg
Cockatiels at Seven was just what I needed.Every Meg Langslow book offers me a new way to connect with the cooky protagonist, whether it's faires, geeks, or head-strong toddlers. In Cockatiels at Seven Andrews scales back her cast of characters, which allows the reader to focus on the plot as opposed to tripping over beasts and relatives and beastly relatives.I like Meg and Michael, and I can't wait to see what shenanigans await them in the next book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cockatiels at Seven
Part of the Meg Langslow Mystery Series.Lots of fun as usual by Donna Andrews

3-0 out of 5 stars Could use a few more 'tiels!
I love Donna Andrews' books. They are light-hearted and fun. This book is actually the first one to catch my attention (as the owner of four cockatiels) but I bought the first books and read them in order. I couldn't wait to read this one, but I was rather disappointed.

It's a cute book and a decent mystery, but the cover/title (as mentioned in other reviews) is really misleading. It barely has anything to do with cockatiels. Cockatiels are one of the most popular pet birds in America, and they're birds with distinct, unique personalities but in "Cockatiels at Seven" they're briefly mentioned in the book but aren't even the main birds in the plot line. I was hoping for something more along the lines of "Murder With Peacocks" or "Murder With Puffins" or "We'll Always Have Parrots" or any of the books that actually revolve around the birds mentioned in the titles.

I still love Donna Andrews' books and will continue to read and recommend them, but this one is not one of my favorites, which was a bit sad, as cockatiels are (in case you hadn't guessed) my favorite birds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cockatiels at Seven
I love Meg Langslow mysteries. They are warm and enduring. I feel that I am part of this huge family. Living in the NW, I feel the warmth and closeness of the East Coast. Can't wait to read her next one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Birds of Paradise
Very rare that a series holds up so well.all the characters in this series continue to grow. Also we didn't have to wait for upteen books before Meg married. And while some of the charagcters are a littl over the top (this is fiction after all), the interactions are so true.Ms Andrews, please keep writing, I will keep buying and reading and enjoying! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a good book for any cockatiel owner and has the right balance of experience, advice, scientific knowledge, and personal anecdotes. However, some of the photos and paintings are of poor quality, giving the book an unprofessional appearance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cockatiel reference
I "inherited" the cockatiel that showed up in my parent's yard and after searching the internet for what I should be feeding Rocky (besides the cockatiel mixes at the pet store) I happened upon this book.I especially enjoy the chapters on cockatiel research at UC Davis and I hope Rocky will live a long and healthy life with what I have learned to feed and not feed him.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for anyone interested in Cockatiels
What a fantastic book!I have read it from cover to cover, and it is my primary resource book. From a discussion of diet, to the different kinds of cockatiels to different behaviors and what they mean as well as some advice on breeding -- wow!

If you have not bought a book about Cockatiels, or even if you have, this book *must* be added to your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Okay... so I haven't read this book.
But Diane Grindol is a genius!!! Her book cockatiels for dummies is excellent, informational, and entertaining. I'm sure this is too.I recommend buying both books before getting your cockatiel! If you already have one/some, get these books anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Taming Cockatiels
Nothing wrong with the book, I just find it hard to tame the bird, which apparently was not hand fed. With soaring ceilings, we are afraid to take him out of the cage as the book suggests...I can just imagine him up there where I can't catch him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cockatiels, A complete pet owners mannual
All i can say is GREAT. I have never owned a bird and this is what i needed to find all the info about buying, raising, and caring for the new member of the family. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good, informative and practical guide about Cockatiels
I just read the only review for this book....come on, it's not that bad at all. Risa Teitler has written some of the finest books on taming and training pet birds. This book is informative and has lots of practical information in it that covers all aspects of taking care of these unique birds. The book is 92 pages long, and the section on breeding starts on page 76 and goes to the end of the book, so that is a lot of breeding information for a beginner, but it says right there in the text that "...breeding birds are not usually tame to their owners once they begin rearing a family....if possible, keep a single pet and buy other cockatiels for breeding." So, forewarned is forearmed in this case. This fact is true of many other pet birds as well. At least she was honest about it.
And, of course the pictures are great, I mean who doesn't think that cockatiels are cute? I have given this book 4 stars because I thought it was a decent read and most people would like it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Insufficient focus and detail.
Absolutely without a doubt the best thing about Teitler's `Taming and Training Cockatiels' is the wonderful color photographs, but aren't most color photographs of cockatiels charming?Decent photographs areinsufficient criteria to distinguish a book on birds. The book is writtenin a boring style that reads like, `look, here are my pets, aren't theygreat?' The book lacks focus and unsuccessfully attempts to cover too muchmaterial. There are promising introductory sections intended for readersthat have never owned a bird before where instructions on making `firstcontact' without terrorizing the cockatiel are given. However, just a fewpages later there is a large section on breeding birds.Surely it's unwisefor a novice who wants a tame, loveable pet bird to delve into breeding atthe same time?If the author had focused on one area, such as a guidebookfor the new bird owner while avoided irrelevant distractions, I might havebeen able to suggest this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
This was just what I needed to help me look after my new cockatiel. It has lots of good info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for any cockatiel owner!
This was a very informative book, it helped me alot when i first brought home my tiel.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Pictures - Inaccurate Information
I bought the book due to its high variety of cocktiel mutation pictures. As for a lot of the information - I agree that it is outdated and therefore may cause a problem. My avian vet agrees and has given me the heads up on what is best for my little guy.So far she has not been wrong and he has become a strong and beautiful bird since being seen by her.The best advice I can give any bird owner is to ALWAYS take your bird to an "Avian Vet" and believe their expertise over any book!Books are helpful but not always correct. The reason I mention an "Avian Vet" is because they specialize in birds. You wouldn't go to a foot doctor if you had a cold, so why would you take your bird to a cat/dog vet? There really is a difference and it shows in how they handle and understand your bird. They are sometimes hard to find, but worth looking for.Good luck and happy bird owning!:)

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated Information
In Matthew M. Vriends book "The Cockatiel Handbook" you will find a lot of outdated information. Following this outdated information can have a devastating result for your cockatiel, and recommend that any new cockatiel owner purchase a book about the basic care of cockatiels that is published AFTER December 1999. Follow up-to-date information from local bird clubs and organzations, as well as having annual visits to your local avian vet. If you have any questions about basic care of your cockatiel, don't hesitate to ask your vet, pet store, or local breeder. ... Read more

Hi! I liked the book. I have another I prefer but...I think you need to have a few books regarding cockatiels, just to filter out some things. And this is a good one. And Yes! is the answer to the one reviewer who mentioned, Do birds really get caught in the frig and stove?
Cockatiels are so quiet and quick People need to know this. A friend told me a friend of hers killed her Cockatiel by not knowing it was by the frig when she opened it and she close it on the poor thing. So its good to re remind and make people aware of all the hazards that can and will happen if you don't watch them closely. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Psittacosis and its transmission to humans barely noted
When I bought my cockatiel, I also bought several books. This book has nice pictures, and mentions care of the birds, but misses the entire point of diseases in cockatiels. Its explainations of the bird disease and its transmission to humans is so limited and glossed over as to make it appear silly to worry about any possible trasmission. The book should have explained that ANYONE who owns a bird should be aware that the disease psittacosis (ornithosis) is very contagious, carried air born by dried fecal material,"bird dust", and through saliva (such as kissing and sharing crackers).Keeping a new bird in a romm that might serve as a guest room is dangerous if the bird has the disease.Transmission to humans results in a "sudden high fever" 103+ degrees and usually no other symptoms evident at first.A few days later a cough may develop and pneumonia will develop which can and did cause systemic failure rapidly. How do I know?Well, my father died of a pneumonia diagnosed as caused by psittacosis after a short illness after staying in my guest room/family room. This book, which I bought shortly after I bought the bird does little to mention the symptoms or the DANGER or even suggest that if YOU or ANYONE in your family becomes ill after purchasing a new bird/cockatiel to tell your doctor that you have a newly purchased bird. The bird does not need to show any symptoms to carry the disease and any bird can carry it.The bacteria, if contracted, always results in pneumonia but is easily cured IF RECOGNIZED. I read the book cover to cover.IF the book had mentioned this disease and its affect on people, I would have had the information to report to his doctors and perhaps, he would have survived. The book, in my opinion, failed to provide me with necessary and important information. Finally, I would recommend reading a book called, "Cockatiels A Complete Pet Owner's Manual" which does at least carry a warning to pet owners. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Cockatiel Book Stands Out!
I decided to buy this book so I could have a cockatiel book of my own and toread something new, and I am glad I did! This book has many unique photos of cockatiels that I haven't seen in other books. Such as a couple of close up shots of a cockatiel in midflight, a cockatiel hanging upside down on a perch, and two pictures of flocks of cockatiels in Australia. Then there are also beautiful pencil drawings throughout the book also. The reading was fresh and interesting too, with facts I haven't found in other books, for example, why cockatiels yawn a lot, the sensory capabilities of cockatiels, what their life is like in the wild (I have been waiting for a book to mention this!) and how to make a play tree for your cockatiel(s). I think this little book has a lot to offer and I highly recommend it to cockatiel fans!
