Disappointed
The information contained in this book is very general.More thorough and detailed informationcan be found in any basic book on cockatiels.There is only one picture of baby birds in a nest and one picture of a wooden nestbox.All of the other pictures are of adult birds. The books also lacks any pictures or diagrams on the proper technique for hand feeding babies. Information is rather vague in most areas. None of the illnesses or problems associated with hand-feeding are even mentioned. The only merit this book has is its low price.

A nice little book to get you started.
This book takes the novice to the very beginning,how TO get started.It covers everything from breeding and chicks,handfeeding and possible health problems,to breeding for profit.Concise,easy to read,with beautiful colourpictures.I would recommend this book to a beginning breeder. ... Read more

Encyclopedia of Cockatiels
Very good book. Lots of color pictures.I recommend adding it to your library.

Out of Date
This book is out of date- just look at some of the pictures- and not a good book for a novice cockatiel owner keeping one bird as a companion.I suppose it is a good book for breeding, but I only want a pet.Many of the much thinner books on cockatiels available in pet stores have superior and more up to date material.

Outdated "encyclopedia" not a good source for avian info
The information in this book is out of date and in many cases, harmful to your pet if you practice any of it. This book advocates clipping only one wing to tame a bird which is dangerous in practice- it makes a bird more prone to injury when it takes flight. It also encourages misinformation about bird health; the book asserts that healthy cockatiels look healthy. In reality, sick birds do their best to hide their sicknesses because they are naturally prey animals. Other practices akin to phrenology in this book are simply invalid today. I would not recommend this for a new owner or anyone in need of practical advice for raising or caring for a cockatiel. While some of the information is correct, there is also enough misinformation to make an inexperienced owner a danger to their pets.

At least the pictures are cute, so it's not a total loss.

Informative, clear
It was easy to understand and everthing covered in this book was stated mater-of-factly. It had info on colors, maintenance, breeding, basic genetics, problems, courting and mating behaviours, some health issues, babies, and the cockatiel in general. This book was strongest on the subject of breeding but it lacked info on newer, more rare mutations. Over all this book is perfect for novice and experienced breeders as a sorce to refer to when questions arise. It would make a great companion to a cockatiel book that stresses more of the do's and don'ts of first time bird owning for the first time cockatiel owner.

Step By Step Book on Training Cockatiels
Received book and it helped with some of the basics...My Cockatiel is still in training.....

it did not help at all on training my bird
only a person who does not know a lot about their bird would need this

Not a detailed "how-to" training book
I was really hoping for a book that would provide me with insights into training cockatiels in particular.I was sorely disappointed.Though the book does provide a lot of good, solid, but very general information, amuch better book on training parrots is "The New Parrot TrainingHandbook" by Jennifer Hubbard

Best book I have read that acually helped me with my problem

good book to get you started
this is a good general information book.It will help you get started with your cockateils.It has been very helpful to me.

Don't listen to the "EXPERTS"
I read with interest the review from the "professional"cockatiel person. What seems to be a 'one star' for them happens to be veryuseful to all of us "non-professionals".

This book has helpedbeginners and that is what counts. Sometimes, the "experts" aredead wrong when it comes to the simpleness of a book helping the beginningcockatiel owner. This isn't bad, because most of us could give a hoot aboutgenetics and showing your cockatiel at contests.

An archaic collection of cockatiel information.
Having bred and raised cockatiels for 13 years, I can unequivocally statethat this book contains little or no helpful information about cockatiels. In fact, there is a great deal of misinformation. For example, the geneticssection contains incorrect information regarding the breeding of albinocockatiels, treating albino as if it were one gene instead of a combinationof lutino and whiteface.Another good example of Mr. Vriend's use ofarchaic information is that he recommends peat moss in the nestbox, whichcan cause fungal growth leading to aspergillosis, which is a serious lungdisease.

My recommendation:read a book written by someone who hasrecently bred cockatiels.

A WASTE OF TIME/MONEY! Look elsewhere for guidence
This book offers little to no insight in to having/caring/training/managing a companion bird. It spends more time telling the reader all the difficulties of owning a bird, but never advises on how to actually avoid or manage the behaviors. I blasts you with how much a bird might scream or be messy and then say "but with a caring owner and the right situation the bird could be a great pet"!?!?!?! huh??? THAT IS REALLY HELPFUL...NOT! I found the information(lack of information)pointless for anyone that already owns a bird and sorely lacking for anyone that is thinking of purchasing or adopting one. Look elsewhere for any guidence!

The Parrot Companion: Caring for Parrots, Macaws, Budgies, Cockatiels and More
This was the first book I had bought on this subject and it was to help me make a decision on what type of bird I was going to get as a pet/companion (I had taken expert advice from a well established aviary and had whittled it down to either a Senegal or an Amazon).Whilst I found this book had a few good tips in various chapters the overall impression I was left with was very negative. I found the author sort of negative towards nearly every breed of bird featured (negative towards keeping one as a companion bird).I completely appreciate that prospective buyers need to understand the huge amount of time, patience and commitment needed to keep both bird & owner happy and I understand that was likely the author's goal but I felt that the book was nearly written to turn people off the idea of getting a bird.Fortunately it has not turned me off and I will still refer to the book for some of the advice on training/caging, etc which I do think will be useful to me.

Not only is the book up to date, informative and forward thinking, it is full of information on many species it has accompanying stunning colour photo's throughout and beautiful photo's relevant to the information provided.
For people yet to choose their companion and for those of us who already have our companions the book is a beautiful asset to your library!

Great for the Breeder
First, let me say that I am not a breeder.I just have a little cockie friend as a pet.I found the book to be informative, but weighing very strongly to the breeder and less to the new owner.If I ever do decide to breed, then this book will be a great reference.However, I found that it didn't offer as much basic information in detail that a newer owner would like to have as other books that are less geared to breeders.

Excellant!
Ms. Reed's book is a wonderful reference.While some may say it is dry or technical I find that to be untrue.I have had the book in my personal library for a number of years.I have several copies due to the wear andtear from use.My first copy is highlighted, underlined, and filled withmy personal notes.I raise a considerable number of handfed babycockatiels every year.I advise everyone who buys a bird from me to pickup a copy of Ms. Reed's book.What I really like about the book isthe range of topics covered.This book is not a simple introduction tocockatiels that is quickly outgrown by the cockatiel owner.This is a bookthat will be useful for years to come. There is expert information to takethe reader from pet owner to breeder and on to showing.

While someof the information may have become dated (mutations), the overwhelmingmajority of the information in this book remains relevant and accurate.Ithas been a lifesaver many times over the past years.I look forward to therevised edition!

Very informative for beginning breeders
While I've had companion parrots for a number of years, breeding was something new....after talking to several breeders, my husband and I decided to try our hand at cockatiels.Prior to actually purchasingbreeder stock, I visited a local pet store and purchased this book----itwas the best thing I could have done at that point.The book is very goodat explaining all the different aspects of breeding---I highly recommend itfor anyone who is thinking about breeding.This book may not be for acompanion cockatiel owner, with a lot of technical information that is notexactly an exciting read, but as far as knowing what you are getting intobefore taking the step of actually setting up an aviary it is a must have.

Informative Book
This book is informative and well set out. Looking up a paticular part is easy. It has good pictures and is easy to read. It needs to expand a little more in the illness section as when my bird was ill, the symptons did not match any in the book. It is a good book for kids to start with as it goes through care of a cockatiel, diet and general day to day concerns. If you have a sick bird, another book on the shelf is recommended.

If you're a new owner, get this book.
This book is not just for owners of cockatiels.

When I first bought mypet tiel, this book was very helpful in discussing all the elements ofowning a new cockatiel.

Ms. Rach does a very nice job of outlining allthe necessary steps in making sure your tile is healthy andhappy.

Various chapters in the book include nutrition, training, taming,purchasing, health, diagnosing sickness, cockatiel behavior and otherhelpful chapters.

The book is enjoyable to read as Ms.Rach draws from herlove and experience in raising these wonderful birds.

What isdistinguishing about her book and other books is her style of writing. Youcan really tell that she really loves these particular birds.

The bookdoes not delve into the subjects of breeding or other heavy duty bird typetopics such as formulating your own bird seed diet, etc. But if you are anew cockatiel owner who needs a good basic book about how to take care ofyour bird, I would recommend this book to you.

Not much help for one who is contemplating a cockatiel as a pet.Day-to-day maintenance is not detailed.It says to clean the cage - but no idea of how often.I wonder about droppings - not a word on the subject.Are they a problem?Doesn't mention that they can be VERY noisy pets,serious screamers.I don't want to purchase a cockatiel and 3 days laterbe wishing that I had not! ...
