5-0 out of 5 stars Short and easy to read
The book was nice and short, easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Financial Literacy 101
This book is an engaging reference tool.It is more than information on how to pay for college. It is a beginning step to understanding financial literacy and preparing for your financial future.

Chapter One sets the framework for the book and begins expanding the readers world view on money in general.Understanding the basic difference between income and wealth is the first step towards financial literacy.

The insight that is given in terms of how you negotiate and relate for preparing for college and working with financial aid officer can easily be transferred to relating to the bank or any other financial institution.

There is more to this book than is obvious to naked eye.

Dr. LaVeist is using college entrance preparation as an opportunity to introduce his reader to wider concepts on money and basic finances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining
I enjoyed this book. The authors are two brothers who weaved a story about getting their sons ready for college into a book about college financial aid, which is usually a very boring topic. Very creative! They managed to entertain AND educate.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Been A long time comming
I am so thankful to these two brothers. Who have work hard in bring all of this information together.Look forward to here about more in the near future. Again, thank you, my son will benefit from this greally.

This is just the type of book on financial aid that I was looking for. It makes the whole confusing process easy to understand. It's a quick read, intelligent and entertaining. It speaks to black folks. After reading it, I have a better understanding of how the whole thing works. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every College Bound student needs this book!!!
I Love this book!
As a high school counselor, I recommended this to many of my seniors. Their parents where very thankful. It is a thorough treatment of the college admissions process. My favorite part is in the financial aid section, where they discuss good award letters, vs poor award letters.
Each chapter ends with a to do list, as well as many online resources. The workbook style gives students a much needed organizational piece to keep track of everything in one location.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
One of the most complete books on the subject I've found yet. Very complete and detailed information, especially on financial aid, written with common sense and information I could understand and use. By following the financial aid information, we ended up with an excellent financial aid package. ... Read more

Product Description
"An excellent, interesting, well-written book.... It is a significant contribution to the history of higher education, and in particular, to the history of liberal arts colleges."--David W. Breneman, University of VirginiaAdmissions and financial aid policies at liberal arts colleges have changed dramatically since 1955. Through the 1950s, most colleges in the United States enrolled fewer than 1000 students, nearly all of whom were white. Few colleges were truly selective in their admissions; they accepted most students who applied. In the 1960s, as the children of the baby boom reached college age and both federal and institutional financial aid programs expanded, many more students began to apply to college. For the first time, liberal arts colleges were faced with an abundance of applicants, which raised new questions. What criteria would they use to select students? How would they award financial aid? The answers to these questions were shaped by financial and educational considerations as well as by the struggles for civil rights and gender equality that swept across the nation. The colleges' answers also proved crucial to their futures, as the years since the mid-1970s have shown. When the influx of baby boom students slowed, colleges began to recruit aggressively in order to maintain their class sizes. In the past decade, financial aid has become another tool that colleges use to compete for the best students.By tracing the development of competitive admission and financial aid policies at a selected group of liberal arts colleges, ^ICrafting a Class^N explores how institutional decisions reflect and respond to broad demographic, economic, political, and social forces. Elizabeth Duffy and Idana Goldberg closely studied sixteen liberal arts colleges in Massachusetts and Ohio. At each college, they not only collected empirical data on admissions, enrollment, and financial aid trends, but they also examined archival materials and interviewed current and former administrators. Duffy and Goldberg have produced an authoritative and highly readable account of some of the most important changes that have taken place in American higher education during the tumultuous decades since the mid-1950s^I. Crafting a Class^N will interest all readers who are concerned with the past and future directions of higher education in the United States. ... Read more

Did you notice that Jennifer Smith has written reviews for several of the scholarship books atamazon.Apparently she is a fake. She probably works for amazon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, but the book didn't quite pay for itself
This book had quite a number of scholarships listed, but some of them were of no use to 99.9% of the population of college students. If I was interested in attending Generic College, USA, and I wanted to know what scholarships they offered, I would go to that college and ask them.I wouldn't look it up in a general college scholarship book. Thus it was frustrating when college-specific scholarships were listed for some schools, but not all. Some of the listings were outdated, and I felt like I had to read through the whole book to make sure I didn't miss any scholarships I was eligible for.I sent out about ten letters to different scholarship opportunities, and not all of them were responded to, and of those that replied and to whom I submitted applications to, no money was won. Thus I was not very happy with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarship abilities
I bought this book hoping it would be really succesful in helping to find several scholarships that would help me to find some money for college.I was very suprised how easy it was and how much money I earned.I got the book payed for at least 100 times in my first scholarship.I am very thankful for this book and I think the author should be highly praised.
