From the author: Using the 2001 Survey of Consumer Finances, this study investigates the effect of the college financial aid rules on household portfolio choices. The federal algorithm used to compute financial aid does not take into consideration assets accumulated in retirement accounts or as home equity, and households can reduce their implicit marginal financial aid tax rates by moving funds into retirement accounts or by increasing their home equity. Our results show that households who have higher marginal financial aid tax rates have a larger fraction of their portfolios invested in retirement assets and home equity, relative to taxable assets.

From the supplier: Accountants could help their clients maximize college financial aid by having a clear picture of what constitutes need. The concept is defined as the total yearly educational expense, which includes such matters as tuition, books, transportation and meals, minus the required family contribution. Necessary reductions could be made to increase the financial need through a thorough understanding of the required family contribution concept. This does not, of course, entail any sort of manipulation of information but a presentation of the case in the most favorable manner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good guidebook for the FAFSA form
This guidebook to the FAFSA form provides valuable insights into filling out the FAFSA form itself as well as how to position your finances BEFORE it's time for the FAFSA form.
It is written on a very elementary level so that it is easy to follow, however it has an unprofessional "feel", not helped by several typos and certain passages inadvertently repeated.
Even though the book is outdated (it was written specifically for the 2007 FAFSA), it is still applicable and useful for 2009.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Book On College Financial Aid
This book was written by a certified public accountant who obviously has done a lot of research to produce the definitive book on maximizing college financial aid. It is incredibly informative and tells you about all forms, sources and qualifications for financial aid.It also walks you through every step to filling out the FAFSA form correctly. This section alone is worth the price of the book as one small mistake on this form could cost you thousands of dollars in aid. The author also gives many helpful tips in each chapter that will save you time and money and help you avoid making costly mistakes. It is up to date (just published in 2007) and includes information on the 529 plans. This book is a must have for any parent who will soon be sending a child off to college. My suggestion, buy this book when your child is a sophomore or junior in high school so you can start planning early on how you will finance your child's college education. Well done, Ms Orzechowski. ... Read more
