I was looking for info. with vintage photos, etc.on "One Room" school houses.I found this book on my local library shelf, and sat at the library one rainy afternoon, EnThRaLLeD!! I now want to own it - that is why I'm here! Best book ever to bring back the "atmosphere" in your mind--or if you've never been to a country school, to fantasize!

Product Description
This study compares two urban schools based on their ability to provide an effective education for Hispanic students.Broderick High School began as an elite, Anglo-dominated institution and evolved into a school whose student body was 82% Hispanic. It is large, public and with a history of sporadic racial tension, walkouts, and a high dropout rate for Hispanic students. Escuela Tlatelolco is small, private, and Chicanocentric.Founded in 1970 by Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales, a leader of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, it was designed to provide Chicano students the opportunity to reinforce pride in their language, culture, and identity.

Through interviews of administrators, teachers, graduates, and students at both schools as well as personal observations, a significant difference was discovered between the experiences and attitudes of those who attended the public school in the 1960s through 1980s and those who graduated in the 1990s.As the public school increased Hispanic administration, teaching and operating staff, and changed its curriculum to include Hispanic history, Hispanic students expressed a greater degree of satisfaction and fulfillment. ... Product Description
On the morning of March 26, 1931, Carl Miller embarked on his usual school bus run through the vastness of Colorado's southeastern plains. Miller's routine was to pick up some 20 young people and deliver them to a pair of forlorn one-room schoolhouses. Then in the late afternoon, Miller would climb back into his wooden school bus and return his young charges to their farm homes. This would not be a usual day for Miller and his young passengers, however. By late afternoon their little school bus was marooned in the worst blizzard to strike Colorado in nearly 50 years. Before rescuers arrived 33 hours later, driver Miller and 5 of the young people-including his daughter-were dead or soon would die. News of the so-called "Pleasant Hill School Bus Tragedy" soon flashed around the world. Culled from newspaper accounts, archives, and interviews with 6 survivors, now in their eighties, a moving story emerges. This is a true tale of the will to survive, of media exploitation, false heroism, lifelong heartbreak, and lessons learned by people too young to fully understand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Children of the Storm: The True Story of the Pleasant Hill School Bus Tragedy
This is a true storm about a group of school kids and what they experienced during a freak snow storm. The author starts the book by giving you some background information about the area and the families involved. Then they go to the early morning hours on the day the storm hits.Even thought the bus made it to the school just as the storm started it was decided that the kids should be returned to their homes, instead of waiting out the storm.CHILDREN OF THE STORM tells you what the kids went through while being trapped in a blizzard on a bus for 30 plus hours as well as what happened afterwards. It tells you how it affected their lives and where they are today.Even though it was a true story as well as a tragedy I enjoyed reading this book.I thought it was an excellent read.Children of the Storm: The True Story of the Pleasant Hill School Bus Tragedy

5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping true story
For anyone interested in Colorado or prairie history, this is a must read. Using many sources, including interviews from the few remaining survivors, the writers detailed account of the thirty-three harrowing hours trapped in a bus with cardboard back windows and no heat, the resulting deaths and the aftermath, are a chilling account of a forgotten history. Included are the medical details, how the press exploited the ordeal, those who came to help and finally, what became of all 'The Children of the Storm'. Anyone who reads this book should also try 'The Children's Blizzard' by Laskin. Both clearly show what danger prairie children lived in on a daily basis, even into the early twentieth century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to put down.
The only reason I didn't read this book in one sitting was because my eyes grew tired. This story besides being true is fascinating - well researched and well written. The book even has an update on the survivors of the snowbound bus tragedy in Colorado.Highly inspiring read.

Children of the Storm:The True Story of the Pleasant Hill School Bus Tragedy
Ariana Harner and Clark Secrest
On a clear, sunny spring day in 1931 the bus driver, Carl Miller, made his route to bring the twenty children to the Pleasant Hill school house, a one room building located on the plains of Kiowa County, Colorado.Upon arriving, a terrible storm cloud came up from the north.Carl Miller and the teachers decided they should send the children home, instead of keeping them at the one room school house without food or water. The bus started out in what was then a blinding blizzard. It was not long before he was lost, finally ran off the road, and the bus was stranded.
Finally, Mr. Miller thought that it would be best for him to try to find help.He asked the oldest child on the bus, Bryan Untiedt, to make sure the other children do not go to sleep.Do whatever he could to keep them from freezing to death. Some of the children had very little for coats.Mr. Miller was soon lost and later found frozen to death. There were no phones and the only help was from families and friends, who were unable to find them until the second day. They found three children had already frozen to death and seventeen were still alive. They were all taken to the hospital for treatment of frostbite on their hands, feet, etc...
The Denver Post interviewed the children and families.Bryan Untiedt was promoted as a "hero" by the Post.Other newspapers were interviewing and photographing the survivors, as well.
Nineteen days after the tragedy, all the survivors and their families were invited to Denver for one week to see different sites.Mr. Bonfils, the owner of the Denver Post, presented all the survivors with some cash and a gold-plated heroism medal.Bryan Untiedt was also invited to Washington, D.C. by President Herbert Hoover.
This story was very informative about what can happen in a short time with spring storms and how dangerous they can be on the plains of Colorado.I did not like how the media made Bryan Untiedt a hero more than the other survivors.I feel that you should read this book called Children of the Storm.Ages 8 to Adult.Talli, Eads Middle School, 6th Grade

5-0 out of 5 stars A POIGNANT STORY, FINELY RESEARCHED, FINELY TOLD.
I am the author of "Rivers of Wind: A Western Boyhood Remembered," another story of life on the Colorado High Plains in an earlier time. While growing up in southeastern Colorado, even as a child I remember hearing about the Pleasant Hill school bus tragedy. Knowing that a definitive account of this historic event had never been written, when this book came out I was pleased to see what a fine job Ariana Harner and Clark Secrest had done. "Children of the Storm" is a finely-researched and well-written account of this tragedy. Along with telling the story of the unfortunate victims of a devastating High Plains blizzard which trapped them for thirty-three hours in a dilapidated school bus with pieces of cardboard lodged into the frames of its broken-out windows, the book tells of the subsequent exploitation of the survivors by a greedy media mogul and a United States President seeking reelection. "Children of the Storm" tells, at long last, the true story of the twenty children and one adult who were trapped in the school bus, the tragic deaths of six of them, and both the short-term and long-term effects the event had on the lives of the survivors. ... This second edition of Colorado Mathematical Olympiad: the First Twenty Years and Further Explorations gives the interesting history of the competition as well as an outline of all the problems and solutions that have been created for the contest over the years. Many of the essay problems were inspired by Russian mathematical folklore and written to suit the young audience; for example, the 1989 Sugar problem was written in a pleasant Lewis Carroll-like story. Some other entertaining problems involve olde Victorian map colourings, King Authur and the knights of the round table, rooks in space, Santa Claus and his elves painting planes, football for 23, and even the Colorado Springs subway system.

Product Description
A colorful look at rural America's rebound--and at the tensions created when urban expatriates meet old-time country values--centered on a Colorado community and its one-room school house.

In the 1990s, rural America increased in population three times faster than it did in the 1980s, as people left cities searching for a slower pace, new opportunities, and better schools. Battle Rock is the examination of one such rural community tucked into McElmo Canyon in the remote southwest corner of Colorado. From 1999-2000, Bill Celis lived in the community and attended Battle Rock school, which sits in the middle of the canyon, providing both a real and figurative divider between the longtime farmers and ranchers from the newer urban expatriates. As Celis warmly describes the daily lives of the canyon residents, the children, and their teacher, he carefully paints the portrait of a community under pressure resulting from conflicting viewpoints, goals and values. Along the way, he encounters bull snakes and loaded revolvers, Anasazi ruins and majestic vistas, poverty, stubbornness, ghosts, a cattle drive, and the daily struggles on the playground and in school board meetings. In Battle Rock, Celis puts to rest the common misperception that smaller communities offer simpler lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book
"Battle Rock" is a marvelous book that is not only about the history of a one-room school and the life and times of one particular one-room school, but also a marvelous look at a way of life most of us didn't even know existed in the 21st century. Celis brings a sharp reporter's eye and a delightful easy-to-read writing style that makes this one of the best reads of the year. He has taken a very serious subject, has researched it thoroughly, and presents it in a personal, moving work. It is as if Celis is sitting next to you gently telling you what he has seen and heard and why it is important. He is a remarkable story-teller. Don't miss this wonderful reading experience.

A compelling read. The author takes the reader to a part of America that I never knew existed. This isn't like Mayberry, it's the new real west.
Celis takes you into the hearts and homes of the residents of Cortez. You really care what happens to the people in this story and get to see all sides of the conflict. A wonderful year-in-the-life look at the rural west and the folks that choose to live there. ... Read more

Product Description
On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 fellow students and one teacher at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Two of the victims of the Columbine massacre, Cassie Bernall and Rachel Scott, reportedly were asked by the gunmen if they believed in God. Both allegedly answered “Yes” and were killed. Within days of their death, Cassie and Rachel were hailed as modern-day Christian martyrs, and became useful symbols for those seeking to advance a conservative political agenda. According to police investigators, however, Cassie and Rachel may never have been asked by their killers about God; they simply may have been victims of a senseless crime rather than martyrs to a cause. As the religious and political use of Cassie and Rachel continues, The Martyrs of Columbine provides a careful examination of the available evidence and attempts to discover what really occurred.

1-0 out of 5 stars disrespectful to the parents of the victims...
I can not comprehend Mr. Watson's intentions in writing this book.Although I disagree with the parents of the Columbine victims who believe that more gun laws will prevent further school violence, I respect their opinion and would not dare insult them in a way that this author insults those parents with Christian beliefs.

Not once does this author offer solid evidence that the Rachel and Cassie accounts never happened. He even goes so far as to quote law that a jury must follow in defining "proof" because it is so lacking in this book that the author can only be too aware of it.He insults the victims and their families by calling into question their stories, essentially calling them liars, based only on his own speculation. With the mass of confusion in the library that day, the Cassie story will always be debated, yet again, Mr. Watson offers no new evidence. As for Rachel Scott's story: the following text is an excerpt from page 151 ofNo Easy Answers, The Truth Behind Death At Columbineby Brooks Brown and Rob Merritt."After he got the breathing tube out, he (Castaldo) was crying and upset, telling me through sobs how they taunted her (Rachel Scott) and teased her about God," Castaldo's mother Connie Michalek, told the Denver Rocky Mountain News on April 21, 2000.Mr. Watsonactually explores the idea that she was being less than truthful with what Richard said in the hospital that day!

It is the opinion of this reader that if an author wishes to make the accusations that he does, he should bring new and compelling evidence to the table. This book offers no new insight into the Columbine tragedy. The information he cites as evidence has been around for years, and is available to anyone with internet access or a library card.

5-0 out of 5 stars Telling Book
I read this book after reading "She Said Yes," by the Bernall family.I simply cannot see how the public will accept much of the information that the Bernall family provides for Cassie's death. What I feel is that a religious community has entangled this issue with a social agenda.Justin Watson flatly disproves or casts doubt on claims that the media takes for granted. For that, you should read his book.

As a book, Martyrs of Columbine is very readable and thorough.Although at times, Justin Watson seems to insert his personal opinion (especially in a chapter about the media's treatment of the event), his commentary is logical and is usually quite revealing of the politics in the American religious movement.

1-0 out of 5 stars Big disapointment
I was very disapointed in the book.Basicly the writer took bits and pieces from books written by others, twisted their words and put his own spin on it.It repeats itself over and over being so repetative I had to put it down. There are good books out there written by people who were there.I suggest you take a look at those.I read many good one's but this book wasnt in that catagory.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thoughtful Examination of the Columbine Martyr Stories
Watson's book belongs in the collection of anyone interested in what happened at Columbine and why it happened. Rather than trying to discuss all of the issues that swirl around this event, the author concentrates on the "Do you believe in God?" stories associated with victims Cassie Bernall and Rachel Scott. More than simply trying to determine whether these stories are true - he doesn't think they are -- he examines how and why these stories took on a wider cultural and political significance. Particularly interesting is how these "martyrs" got used to advance some of the pet causes of the Religious Right, such as getting prayer back in public schools. While those who continue to believe Cassie and Rachel really were martyred will dislike Watson's conclusions, it is hard to see how they could argue with his thorough and thoughtful discussion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book That Looks Into The Controversies Of Columbine
I read this book not too long ago and I think that it's a great book that looks into some of the controversies of Columbine(i.e. whether Rachel Scott was mentioned in the "Basement Tapes" or not, whether Cassie Bernall was asked whether she believed in God or wehther it was another person[who survived]).

From all I've learned about what happened, I'm very skeptical that the Rachel and Cassie stories are true.

I think that it's a rush to judgement to say that certain stroies are true(especially when there is evidence that suggest otherwise)and I think that the main lesson of this book is that "don't take things at face value". ... Read more

In the years that have passed since the Columbine High School massacre of April 1999, almost everyone seems to have heard of Cassie Bernall, the student who, after affirming her belief in God, was shot and killed by two crazed classmates. She answered with a Yes - and that single word echoed around the globe. Still, Cassie's parents knew only too well that behind the image of the picture-perfect saint portrayed by the news media was a teenager who worried about her weight, her grades, and her chances of finding a boyfriend. It's a story that her mother, Misty Bernall, tells with alarming honesty and compelling devotion - a story that everyone who cares about teens needs to read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars form the darkness to the light of God
She said yes is an interesting and real story about a girl who was living the worst moment of her life...trying to grow up, in a way which was no the correct one. she was a punker, and more than that, she gave her soul to satan; but after all, her parents noticed how whe was changing, in the right moment to stop her get her daugther back.although everyone was thinking Cassie was a lost girl already, she made it and start been a religious, educate, lovely and normal person again, as everyone else.what her parents did to change herm was the imposible and with the help of God she rebirth. since then, she tried to live her life in the best way, always thinking in God and trying to be better than herself, and better than the day before.
she was always thinking about her mission in her life, what did God had prepared for her, and it was something really special, she died for what she believe on, and she died saying yes, i believe in God.

Irecommend this book to everyone, because it show you that nothing is imposible to God's power and if you really want to chang you can make it true.
Like in the chapter title "home front" there is a quote which could help every mother or dad to understand they're sons and daugther:"...stop trying so hard to be Cassie's friend. You're the adult; you're her mother; you call the shots.you don't have to have Cassies's approval for everything you do. She just end up thinking the world revolves around her, and that she can do whatever she wants, because you'll still love her."This is a story about someone who answer one of the most commom but hardest question: Do you believe in God? before she was murdered, and with the gun in her head, she just said the true, she said yes; and right after that Yes, she was death.
Read this book that is going to teach you so much things; this book is also about a mother who lost her daugther and all of her dreams with her, she couldn't even say bye to her, and she didn't really spent time with her in her last moment, but she did everything possible to made the best for her daugther. like in the last chapter, the writter (Cassie's mom) says: "since she died, I've tried to be more like she was. I went through my CD"s and got rid of the ones that didn't have a possitive message. I've tried not to be negative and tried not to judge others by how they look or what they said. I'm also trying to be kinder and more giving. I guess that poem just shows how you can hurt someone without even knowing it"
this book tells you every single moment: seek untli you find, and don't give up. Pray, believe in god, live the life day to day, because you don't know what can happen tomorrow or in an hour.

3-0 out of 5 stars She Said Yes
"She Said Yes" is a good book.It is about an unusual experience with a normal person who thinks nothing can happen to her daughter. Then the unthinkable to her happens. This is an inspirational book and it tells you to do what you feel is right. If you do this you should have no regrets. This book was a very interesting experience because the author is a normal person. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars personal religious experience, but no depth
the book is about the author's conversion experience. But, it has little context to the rich texture of the high school Columbine or the massacre or who she knew before, how she saw that all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Intresting Book
I read this book recently and I think that it's a very facinating story of a survivor of the Columbine shootings, of how she went on with her life and found faith and of how she is reaching out to others in the years since the shootings. The only weakness in the book is that she doesn't talk about the aftermath of Columbine in much detail and what she thought of it, especially regarding that a lot of the people who may read this book has been following what happened for an extended period of time and this may disappoint those who would read the book for that reason.

Overall, I think that this is a very good book and that people who are intrested in matters of faith even during the most trying of times should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marked for Life
Crystal Woodman Miller is a brave young woman who took tragdey and turned it into hope, she took pain and turned it into a passion, a passion fo God, and life, and her book is an inspiration to everyone who reads it, and her life and presence is a testament to everyone who is blessed to read this. This book is so honest and true, that it is amazing, and it is a true example of love and strength.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional and full of Faith!
Crystal has created an excellent teaching tool. She identifies personal experiences and links them to a growing faith. She demonstrates how we can grow in faith even under tradgic situations as long as we have hope and belief in God.I will read this book a number of times because it brings one back to reality and the nead for God in our lives. Thanks Crystal for a great book.God gave you a tremendous gift.Mike Fielding

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!
I was absolutely moved by this simple, yet profound story of a young woman who chose hope after such tremendous trauma in her life.Crystal tells a beautiful story of suffering, confusion, hurt and then perserverance and ultimately, hope. Her journey illustrates so well that God brings "beauty from ashes."I highly recommend this book to anyone - whether currently struggling or coasting comfortably through life.... this is truly a wonderful book! ... Product Description
Lives of Passion, School of Hope tells how a progressive public school in Colorado has transformed the lives of its alumni. It is about what happens to children and adults when they are encouraged to follow their bliss. It is also about personal empowerment and the development of confidence, curiosity, and compassion in our public schools.

This book offers stories and reflections from the alumni of a school where the students hired the teachers, ran their own government, evaluated their own progress, and designed their own curriculum. It's the story of an extended family of students, staff, and parents who have formed their own community of learners over the course of thirty-eight years.

We all have an important stake in our public schools. In these days of teaching for testing, standardization, school violence, and alienation, readers will want to know about a public school that has not only weathered the political and social storms of nearly four decades, but has done so with integrity and success. The alumni and the author offer their perspectives on how a school without grades, credits, or a set curriculum has affected them as adults. Some say it saved their lives!

Lives of Passion answers questions frequently asked about a school so different from the mainstream: did students succeed in college, what do they do for a living, are they living according to the ideals of the school, are they happy and productive as adults in a democratic society? The answers to these questions are in turn surprising, riveting, and insightful.

It points toward a future that may depend on the injection of heart, hope, and passion into our public schools. It is the story of the place of personal growth in public education, and how we can be inspired to create a better world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A top pick for those considering alternative educational methods
When the kids run the school, unbelievable things can occur. "Lives of Passion, School of Hope: How One Public School Ignites a Life Long Love of Learning" tells the story of a truly unique school where the students run the show. In spite of all pessimistic outlooks, the school under this method has had untold success and Rick Posner does well in telling readers how this unique method works. "Lives of Passion, School of Hope" is a top pick for those considering alternative educational methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great testament of what high school should be for young people
Rick Posner has written an extensive account of the history, structure and success of Jefferson County Open School, which has been in existence for 40 years. In this book, he documents why the environment of a school is more important than the rigid and unrelenting structure of class periods, grades, credits and assignments that have no real connection to a student's own life.Near the beginning of the book, the author refers to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, where it is apparent that someone who is in an unsafe environment is unlikely to be successful because their basic needs have not been met, as is the case for many students in high school. He writes about the structure of the school (Contrary to misconceived beliefs, the school does have a structure - it isn't a free floating unstructured school.#, which includes a proactive advisory system where each instructor serves as an advisor to a group of students and meets with them regularly to do group activities - this allows instructors to really get to know the students and work with them closely through good and bad times, a series of six passages #or projects) where students get to learn about themselves and their interests through learning about the world around them, and a weekly school meeting called governance where ALL students get the opportunity at chairing meetings, taking minutes, and making announcements and presentations. There's more I'd like to mention, such as school trips, which were my key to success, but my review would be too long. The way the school is set up allows all students to have a stake in the learning process.A stake in the learning process something that is mysteriously absent from most public schools, yet is sorely needed for students who could do so much more with their lives than just getting by.Also, the author writes extensively about the success of so many students over the years for which JCOS meant so much to them well into their adult lives. This book should serve as a testament to what school should be for everyone in the 21st century.

When I graduated over 20 years ago from what I called "Mountain Open" (The high school was in Evergreen, Colorado at the time.), there was a real stigma attached to having attended a public school without credits or grades.I thought that when I went on to college, I would do just as poorly if not worse than I did the last time I attended a school with grades. This turned out to be entirely untrue, as my grade point averages for my associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees I received after high school were all higher than the average GPA of JCOS students who went on to college (in a survey that the author of this book did, the average GPA for

5-0 out of 5 stars "Student Friendly"&"Reader Friendly"
I've never read about a more "Child&Adult Friendly" school in my life! This book needs to be read by all those educators who know in their hearts that there must be a better way as well as by every parent considering educational alternatives for their youngsters. Even though Rick's writing is so very "Reader Friendly" as he documents "How One Public School Ignites a Lifelong Love of Learning," I find that I must reread it to fully appreciate its beauty!

5-0 out of 5 stars A true gift!
Dr. Posner speaks through the alumni of the Open School in this engaging and thought-provoking book. While describing the school philosophy and structure, he weaves candid and often inspirational interviews with alumni throughout his narrative. As a former student of this remarkable school I was reminded once again of its continued influence on my life. A true and timely gift to alums, educators, and future students of all schools!

5-0 out of 5 stars I always knew I was getting something special
As an alumna of the Jefferson County Open School, and someone who has watched this book move from an idea to a reality over 8 years of hard work, I am very gratified by the result. It is far too easy to become a bit jaded out in the 'real world,' but this book was a great touchstone for me, bringing me back to my roots in the philosophy of the school and some of the 'why's' behind my decisions as an adult. For those of us who were lucky enough to get a democratic, open education, at the Open School or elsewhere, this is a great read and a profound way to retouch on core values.

Also, this kind of thinking about education is a *real* paradigm shift for most.I'm so glad there is a book that I can pass on to others to share these ideas and values in education. It's a great read, too, so I can recommend it knowing I am not asking friends and acquaintances to plow through a dry text.Enjoy! ...
