4-0 out of 5 stars Great fun...harkens back to an earlier age
"The Computer Virus Desk Reference" is a deeply serious computer book. Written by a Lt. Colonel in the army, it presents an at-time-sobering account of the threat posed to your standard computer user by viruses, logic bombs, trojan horses, and the like.It concludes with a jaw-droppingly detailed listing of (what appears to be) *every computer virus known to man*.

Well, as of 1992.

Remember computer books like this? Before the For Dummies revolution proved that you could sell computer books to the masses? The "Desk Reference" is your standard insider guide, but it's incredibly fun to read. It is, of course, horribly out of date, but that's the point: it addresses a still-pressing problem in an unpatronizing fashion, from a position 15 years in our past. I mean, c'mon: what modern desk reference would include a floppy-cleaning bit of C code in the appendix? Heck, in what modern computer book would the "Internet" actually merit an index entry, which reveals its presence on a mere four pages?

The "Desk Reference" is a glimpse, in other words, into the way things used to be; the comprehensive virus listing alone (so *that's* what Michelangelo did!) justifies the small expense that goes into purchasing this. ... Read more

Product Description
Astronomy on the Personal Computer provides the reader with a thorough introduction to the computation of celestial mechanics, which is of particular significance for carrying out astronomical observations. Covering everything from astronomical and computational theory to the construction of rapid and accurate applications programs, this book supplies the necessary knowledge and software solutions for determining and predicting positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, minor planets and comets, solar eclipses, stellar occultations by the Moon, phases of the Moon and much more. This completely revised edition makes use of the widely implemented programming language C++, and individual applications may be efficiently realized through the use of a powerful module library. The accompanying CD-ROM contains, in addition to the complete, fully documented and commented source codes, the executable programs for Windows 95/98/NT and Linux operating systems. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Astronomy (Pascal Style)
I was a little disappointed with the book's programming code in Pascal.I was hoping at least it was in a more modern language such as C++ or Java, however, the algorithms work well on the generic Pascal compiler. There are too many programs for the average person just to type in, so I suggest getting the book with the media included.Mine came with a 3 1/2" floppy disk (can you tell this was from the 90's).Most machines don't even have floppy disks any more.I had to put this in my older laptop with my floppy to transfer the programs to my jump drive.

Overall, I like the book, and I suppose for a few more dollars I can get these programs in the "modern languages".Thank you for reading this review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good C++ book for astromical calc
This book does not use c-like/c++ but true c++.It begins with Vec3D class hiding private menbers.I learn many things of objective astronomical calc from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional value for money
What I appreciate about this book is that details of many aspects of astronomical computations are clearly explained together with extensively documented full C++ source code and references for further information. As a bonus, extensive star catalogues are supplied, for use with, for example, astrometry.

C++ is *not* my language of choice, but the authors seem to have done a masterful job of using C++ features well, while avoiding obfuscation. Initially at least, I am translating things as I go into Mathematica, as a check that I am understanding what I am reading.

All in all, for getting under the hood, I think Montenbruck and Pfleger provide exceptional value for money.

Product Description
This book/CD-ROM package uses the Mathematica programming language to demonstrate the use of computer simulation as a research tool in all of the sciences, providing materials for students and professionals in such fields as physics, biology, chemistry, ecology, materials science and urban planning. The use of MathLink and "C" programs allow readers to run the most time and memory intensive algorithms through a C-compiler on a local machine. Only a minimal background in Mathematica programming is assumed. Self-contained explanations of the Mathematica and the use of MathLink are given in the Appendices. Equal emphasis is placed on the development of efficient Mathematica programs and on the visualization and numerical analysis of computer simulation results. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Book To Buy When Modeling Cellular Automata
This is the book to buy if you want to build and run the Cellular Automata pioneered by Stephen Wolfram (inventor of "Mathematica" the absolute best math software and more).Like most of us who have been waiting for more than a decade for Wolfram to finish his opus magnum "A New Kind of Science" (available for pre-ordering here on Amazon.com), one can get a little tired of waiting and want to run some of the sterling images sneak pre-viewed on his WEB site to gain some of the same insights he has been gathering since first discovering this phenomenon in the early '80's.I first bought Gaylord's later book; "Modeling Nature",(also available here on Amazon.com)thinking that would be the definitive guide to actually programming and running the simulations on "Mathematica."It's a great book and has many good examples of other kinds of modeling software but not the kind we are interested in, his "ElementaryRules" for these [very] particular 1-Dimensional Cellular Automata.Buy it, program them, run them, view them, and forever have the way you view the world change!

5-0 out of 5 stars {short, nonsense-free, systematic, self-contained}->ELEGANT
How does the algorithmic approach work diffently from the equationalapproach?Gaylord/Wellin's neat book demostrates that.In cases of thepresence of technical difficulties and the absence of the representabilityin terms of equations, thealgorithmic approach is gainning more and moresignificance and enjoys a promising future. The book covers both theprobabilistic systems and cellular automata. Wide-reaching 14 physical andbiological systems are presented to suit various readers' tastes. [It wouldbe a plus if in 2nd edition, the economic systems are EXPLICITLY included, although the authors did put some, say, the random walk model, in thebook.]Each chapter is short [thus, time-saving for self-study],nonsense-free,systematic, and self-contained.It starts from step-by-stepcode fragments, to theintegration of parts into a elegant program. Then,it was wrapped up with the numerical analysis and visualization both togive a feel of the performance of the model and to blow in a strand ofbreeze in our sometimes dry computer programming work. [Hopefully in nextedition the sample solutions to the end-of-chapter computer projects willbe added.] Appendix A and B on MATHEMATICA programming and random numbergenerators concentrate on a few essential points [rather than oneverything] and the authors delivered them effectively. In a nutshell,if you're interested in simulation and if you'd like to use MATHEMATICA, Irecommend this superb book by Gaylord/Wellin. ...
