3-0 out of 5 stars More about the containers than the gardening.
I feel the title is misleading. This book has a huge emphasis on the containers themselves, and not gardening in containers. This would be very valuable for potters who want to know how to make sturdy, frost-resistant pots for gardening.Clay types, combinations of clays, production of the pots- all these are covered in fine detail. The pictures, like all English gardening books I've encountered, are well composed and joyously colorful. However, if you are interested in which plants to plant together in pots, this book is not for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Money well spent
If you're interested in growing conifers, this is definitely a book you need to have in your collection. The photography is simply gorgeous (and inspiring!) and the text is clearly written. Although the author can't possibly cover every cultivar out there, he does a great job in covering many. It's enough to get almost anyone excited and determined to find places in their garden for these wonderful trees and shrubs! (Personal recommendation if you can grow it and almost anyone will be able to...Pinus thunbergii 'Thunderhead'...he's a beauty.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information
This book gives so much information on all types of conifers. From pruning to selection, it's a great source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
This book is wonderful. While it cannot possibly list all the cultivars, it gives nice details about cones, bark and how various evergreens can create a beautiful setting. Gorgeous photos of summer, fall and winter scenes showing the beauty of evergreens over the various seasons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book
This book has lots of beautiful photographs which depict conifers in their mature size and shape. The book is inspiring but has an incomplete plant list. The author lists the most common varieties. A common problem with plant book is that it is hard to keep up with the new stock. I bought four new conifers this year that were not listed in the book. I would have liked to have seen some advise or planting designs on which conifers work well together.Overall it is a very inspirational book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conifer book
This book is a gorgeous, mouth-watering treatise on gardening with conifers. The photography accompanying the garden descriptions is spectacular with conifers shown in all kinds of light as well as different seasons. It makes you want to begin your gardens all over again using nothing but conifers! ... Read more

Planted Junk
Adam Caplin
2001 Ryland Peters 144 pages ISBN 1-84172-159 X

Photographs by Francesca Yorke lift this book out of the "yet another book about containers" rut. She has managed to illustrate the text effectively, providing photographs that are relevant and practical as well as attractive.

Most of the ideas for containers-found around-the-house here are pretty standard stuff, although the writer has presented tin cans and metal containers in an interesting way. Personally, I'd be afraid that plants grown in tin cans, especially the small ones like beer cans, would have their roots cooked in warm weather. Maybe in a shady spot they might be worth a try.

The writer gives some information about planting and watering that may be useful to the novice gardener, but mostly it's the usual drill; filling teapots, baskets boxes drawers and wooden toys with easy to grow plants.

There is a fairly brief plant directory and a U.S. source list for pots and plants (even though the writer is English). The cover blurb says this book is a new approach to container gardening. I can't imagine what the publisher thought was new in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great ideas, and every inspirational.
This book is all about the joy of finding junk and using it to create an interesting and ecclectic container garden. It's my two loves combined, junk hunting and gardening! I really liked how it dealt with different materials, and the pictures gave me more than enough ideas. It had simple steps outlined (including drill bit sizes and other information), and even though I've used a drill once in my life, I think I'd be ready to tackle some of the projects outlined in the book. Overall, it was an excellent book, with lots of inspirational ideas and pictures. If you've ever been at a loss for interesting containers to add to your garden, this is definately the book that will give you tons of inspiration. ... With the wide variety of containers available today, and the ever-increasing range of plants, the possible combinations are excitingly large. The Container Gardening Encyclopedia spans the world of container gardening in the most comprehensive manner possible, not only in terms of the vast array of different plants featured, but also the projects presented. The remaining ten parts each cover a different aspect of container gardening, from window boxes, through to patio pots, and from water gardens to herbs in containers. Throughout, practical advice is offered on selecting the right plants for particular types of container and location, while the essential techniques for planting up, growing and keeping the plants in peak condition are shown in over 1000 colour step-by-step photographs. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is exactly what I was looking for!
I cannot say enough good things about this book.I purchased no less than five books to help me plan my new potting shed, and Teri Dunn's book has by far been the one I have picked up time and again. Her writing style is written for the "normal" gardener, like me, that doesn't garden with her nose in the air. There are plenty of books written for the upper crust gardener, but I like someone to speak to me without constantly reminding me that they were born with a silver spoon in their mouths.Someone with a refreshing and direct style like Teri's is a breath of fresh air.Her ideas are really genuinely helpful, and there are a TON!Lots of special tips I haven't heard of before, and I've been gardening a long time. The pictures in the book are great, and really capture the feel and romance I want my potting shed to have.Gardeners are romantic and ridiculously practical at the same time, reusing and recycling everything, and she speaks to that directly. There are many commonsense ideas to help organize, and fun projects to do.I'm truly motivated, and her book has really helped me prioritize the work I need to do to set up, and I'll be ready by spring.I've written another critique on one of the books I purchased that was a waste of money and huge disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gardener's Delight...
What a beautiful, practical, inspiring book this is!Luckily, I received this book as a gift right at the start of Spring this year and it's helped me tremendously in getting organized for my flower and vegetable gardening. I'm laying claim to half of my husband's storage shed in the back yard to start my own potting area! The photographs of potting sheds, potting spaces and benches are a visual feast.I particularly enjoyed the potting and gardening tips in every chapter. There are also useful tips on gardening tools and supplies, storage and seed starting. Even if I were not a gardener, I'd enjoy this gorgeous book.If you are a gardener, though, it's definitely a MUST HAVE!!! ... Read more

Product Description
Container Gardens are the most popular form of gardening, and it's easy to see why -- they're simple to plant, quick-growing, and perfect for small spaces. it's no wonder containers have become a must-have outdoor decor element from suburban porches to the rooftops of modern high-rise buildings. but too often, containers peak during just one season and are then left to wither for the remaining months of the year.

In Continuous Container Gardens, garden designers Sara Begg Townsend and Roanne Robbins have teamed up to offer an innovative system for creating stylish containers that change with the seasons. Using an unusual array of plants, Townsend and Robbins begin with a main stage plant -- a woody plant garden ornament, or eye-catching perennial. Then they add a secondary player for texture and variety. As the seasons change, they show how easy it is to swap in and out a supporting cast of plants for a dynamic year-round display. This simple approach yeilds endless variations, seasonal bursts of color, and varied textures that echo the ever-changing beauty of natue.

The book features twelve designer containers, each with a unique plan for swapping plants in every season...for a total of 48 looks in all. Each design is supported with stunning photographs of the authors' unique plant palette and the fully realized container garden. Users will learn to develop their own design eye and style alongside their gardening skills. The authors' writing style is fresh, friendly, and encouraging and is sure to appeal to a new generation of homeowners and gardeners. With Continuous Container Gardens, gardeners of every level, in every setting, will be able to ceate a container scene for every season. ... Read more
