Product Description
Scholars in various disciplines are recommending comprehensive measures to solve multiple societal as well as individual problems. The philosophy of "community education" has been overlooked but is a workable, comprehensive approach to addressing crime. As used in this book, community education is a philosophy, process, and program comprised of three overriding and interrelated elements: community empowerment, community problem-solving, and the effort to involve all community members in the pursuit of lifelong learning. The Hyde Park neighborhood in St. Louis has one of the highest rates of reported drug sales and high rates of homicide, robbery, aggravated assault, arson, and burglary. The community lays claim to several crime-inducing variables including population loss, a high percentage of population shift resulting in a higher percentage of black population and boarded-up housing units, a high rate of unemployment, a very low per capita income and a high percentage of citizens living below the poverty line, and a high percentage of female-headed households. Nevertheless, the people of Hyde Park are participating in a crime prevention approach that is applicable to all communities. Insights to urban life and problem solving are provided by community members, covering such topics as policing and how it can be improved. These insights and others offered by the author are supported by theories and philosophies found in the literature. In the process of solving their own problems, community members involve themselves in lifelong learning activities and leadership development. Written in a style that is appealing to the general public as well as academics, it is of special interest to educators, community leaders, criminologists, academics in urban affairs and sociology, social workers, law enforcement agents, and politicians. ... Product Description
Crime and justice are no longer simply local or national issues; they are global concerns which require careful study and concerted international action. Meeting this demand, the Global Report on Crime and Justice is a synthesis of research and data gathered by the United Nations Centre for International Crime Prevention. In addressing the nature of crime, the operations of national criminal justice systems, and the state of crime prevention from a cross-national perspective, it brings together in published form for the first time a wealth of information about crime and justice from the Member States of the United Nations. It presents crime trends and operations of criminal justice systems on a comparitive basis. Drawing on numerous sources from within the United Nations and beyond, it examines emerging developments in crime and justice around the world. The report reveals a great diversity of experiences. Special emphasis is placed on comparing both the different ways countries approach crime problems and the shared perspectives that exist between countries and regions. Product Description
So long as there are weaknesses that can be exploited for gain, companies, other organizations and private individuals will be taken advantage of. This theoretically-based but hugely practical book focuses on what is generally seen as financial or economic crime: theft, fraud, manipulation, and corruption. Petter Gottschalk considers how, in some competitive environments, goals can 'legitimise' all kinds of means, and how culture can exert a role in relation to what is seen as acceptable or unacceptable behaviour by individuals. In "Investigation and Prevention of Financial Crime", he addresses important topics including organized crime, money laundering, cyber crime, corruption in law enforcement agencies, and whistleblowing, and provides expert advice about strategies for the use of intelligence to combat financial crime. The uniqueness of his approach to the subject lies in the way he is able to explain intelligence and intelligence processes in the wider context of knowledge and knowledge management. The numerous case studies throughout the book illustrate the 'policing' of financial crime from an intelligence, knowledge management and systems perspective.Law enforcers, lawyers, security personnel, consultants and investigators, as well as those in auditing and accountancy and with responsibilities for containing risk in banks, other financial institutions and in businesses generally, will find this an invaluable source of practical guidance. The book will also be of interest to advanced students and researchers in criminology and police science. ... Read more

Product Description
Evaluation has been a driving force in the recent worldwide growth of problem-oriented policing and situational crime prevention, two related approaches whose primary goal is to reduce opportunities for crimes. Nevertheless, in their introduction the co-editors report a growing consensus that evaluations of many of these programs have been unsatisfactory. Debates about how best to improve evaluations, what types of assessments will be most useful to policymakers and practitioners, and what has been learned from past evaluations, form the starting points for the chapters in this volume. Chapter topics addressed in this volume include: Is the standard of evaluations in problem-oriented policing projects good enough?by Johannes Knutsson; An appraisal of 37 years of situational crime prevention evaluationsby Rob Guerette; Using signatures of opportunity structures to examine mechanisms in crime prevention evaluationsby John Eck and Tamara Madensen; Conducting interviews in small areas to evaluate community perceptions of crime reduction strategiesby Anthony Braga and Brenda Bond; Whats the what in what works? in health, policing and crime preventionby Nick Tilley; Estimating and extrapolating causal effects for crime prevention policy and program evaluationby Gary T. Henry; and, Potential uses of computational methods in the evaluation of crime reduction activityby Shane D. Johnson. This book shows that the task of conducting qualified evaluations is complicated. It represents a challenge both to the police and to the researchersexcerpt from the Foreword by Ingelin Killengreen, National Police Commissioner of Norway. ... Read more
