Product Description
The leading interview and interrogation approach used throughout the world today, the Reid Technique® was initially described in the first edition of Criminal Interrogation and Confessions by Fred E. Inbau. Considered the "Bible" for interviewing and interrogation techniques, the book is currently in its fourth edition and hundreds of thousands of investigators have received training in the Reid Technique. Now for the first time, an abridged and more affordable version of this best-selling book is available from the experts at John E. Reid and Associates, Inc. It makes an ideal supplement in Criminal Investigation courses.

Essentials of the Reid Technique teaches readers how to spot and interpret verbal and nonverbal behaviors of deceptive (or truthful) people – and how to move toward solid confessions from guilty persons. The book includes real-life scenarios and examples to help readers understand the effective and proper way that a suspect should be interrogated and the safeguards that should be in place to ensure the integrity of the confession. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How to interrogate in the 'nice guy' fashion
This book provides all the necessary information on one of the most common forms of interview and interrogation used by law enforcement agencies.I bought it, I have read it thoroughly and also used it to write a final paper in a law enforcement class I was taking.

The course, which is a necessity for having the qualifications needed to utilize this technique, is expensive.I have not and do not plan on taking the course.I promise all the necessary information is right here in this book.

Law enforcement as a rule does not like to see this type of manual out in the public simply because a suspect, armed with the knowledge of what is coming during an interview, can easily outwit them.

I say buy it and use it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read for Detective work
Even though this is a watered down version of the Reid Technique program it is still well worth the money. The subjects that are covered are very well done considering the length of the chapters. If you are entertaining the idea of paying to go to the full blown class but your not quite sure than buy this book to build up your appetite.

3-0 out of 5 stars Scary manipulative tactics
After reading this book I can see why a lot of people in prison are uneducated with mental issues. At first I used to think it was police racism but now I can see these tactics easily work on the mentally challenged. There is a brief section in the book on page 235 about false confessions. The author says in the experience of most professional interrogators the frequency of false confessions is rare and the four factors that appear with some regularity in false confession cases are: 1 suspect is a juvenile and/or 2 suspect suffers some mental or psychological impairment 3 interrogation took place over and inordinate amount of time and 4 interrogators engaged in illegal tactics and techniques. So I'm thinking of how many people in prison suffer from some mental or psychological impairment? I'm also thinking what is considered a inordinate amount of time for an interrogation? Time is a personal experience, a second can seem forever if you're holding your hand over a hot flame or time can speed by on fun days off. The book makes allot of statements that are one sided which is ironic since an investigator should know all factors that could cause a suspect to say or act a certain way...I feel a better book for investigators with tips to use with a flip side view point would be the book....Beat the Heat:How to handle encounters with law enforcement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read for anyone in law enforcement!
Great book on interviewing.I'll be referring to it for a long time in my line of work!

5-0 out of 5 stars A true essential.
For most seasoned investigators, the book provides a confirmation of "street wise" tactics. For the less experienced, the book is a very good guide, but real-life practice is key.

This is a must as a basic or go for the full version if you have time to read the "brick". ... Read more

Product Description
Few things should go together better than psychology and law - and few things are getting together less successfully. Edited by four psychologists and a lawyer, and drawing on contributions from Europe, the USA and Australia, Applying Psychology to Criminal Justice argues that psychology should be applied more widely within the criminal justice system. Contributors develop the case for successfully applying psychology to justice by providing a rich range of applicable examples for development now and in the future. Readers are encouraged to challenge the limited ambition and imagination of psychology and law by examining how insights in areas such as offender cognition and decision-making under pressure might inform future investigation and analysis. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best basic CSI book I have read
I picked this book up on a lark while my husband and I honeymooned in Hawai'i. I work as a CSI in Colorado, and this book is wonderful!I won't say I agree with everything Mr. Dias has to say, however, most of his information is dead on.

Also, he has experiments you can do at home, to get a feel for CSI.

If you are looking for a primer on the wonderful world of Crime Scene Investigations, this is the book to pick up -- good information and fun to read.

The only draw back is the self-promotion for his other books, which I have added to my wishlist :) ... Read more

Product Description
This book provides the most comprehensive and authoritative book yet published on the subject of criminal investigation, a rapidly developing area within the police and other law enforcement agencies, and an important sub discipline within police studies. The subject is rarely out of the headlines, and there is widespread media interest in criminal investigation. Within the police rapid strides are being made in the direction of professionalising the criminal investigation process, and it has been a particular focus as a means of improving police performance. A number of important reports have been published in the last few years, highlighting the importance of the criminal investigation process not only to the work of the police but to public confidence in this. Each of these reports has identified shortcomings in the way criminal investigations have been conducted, and has made recommendations for improvement. "Handbook of Criminal Investigation" provides a rigorous and critical approach to not only the process of criminal investigation but also the context in which this takes place, the theory underlying it, and the variety of factors which influence approaches to it.It will be an indispensable source of reference for anybody with an interest in, and needing to know about, criminal investigation. Contributors to the book are drawn from both practitioners in the field and academics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Pleased!
I received the Criminal Investigations book for $45.I assumed because the book sold on my campus for $85, that the $45 book would be in used condition. To my surprise when I opened the box, it was brand spanking new! Never opened and not a scratch in or on it.

I am using the book for a intro to criminal investigation course. The book breaks down every single detail from what is a criminal investigation to criminal investigations in the 21st century, and everything in between. Its the perfect book for a person new to the area of criminal justice or administration of justice. It gets into detail on each area, but its not too much to where the reader loosed interest.Perfect size and weight to carry in a tote or backpack!

Great Job Michael F. Brown

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Important Book
Paul J. Ciolino is the investigator who saved Anthony Porter from the death penalty by securing a confession from the real killer. It follows that a book written by Mr. Ciolino and Grace Elting Castle would beexcellent It is.

This important book belongs in everyinvestigator's office and in the libary of every courthouse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn from the best investigators
The primary reason I took the time to read Advanced Forensic Criminal Investigations was because I am familiar with all of the authors, and felt an obligation to do so. I was also curious about what this book couldpossibly offer that hasn't been covered time and again in countless books,"hot-to" guides, articles and conferences.

From start tofinish, this book makes you feel as if each author is talking directly toyou, educating you, taking you under his or her wing, so to speak. Imagineif you could have a mentor, the opportunity to pick their brain, the chanceto shadow an investigator who has an absolute understanding of the methodsand techniques, and the ability to answer all of your questions.

So manybooks, manuals and articles are chock full of "how-tos" andhelpful hints, but the real heart of the matter is not explored. Theauthors provide the secrets, the insights, the total package from A to Z.This book does not gloss over the subjects. It deals with all the aspectsof the investigative steps, and provides relevant examples.

This bookalso makes you think. I found myself contemplating the many options Ishould have explored in the past which were so clearly explained in eachand every chapter. I recalled techniques I had forgotten, and learned somany more new ones. I got an insight into the way that other fellowprofessional investigators handle their investigations. I may never becomean expert in the areas covered in the book, but I now have an understandingof the methods and sciences covered in this publication, an understandingthat can only make me a better educated, and knowledgeable, professionalinvestigator.

This book is broken down into fifteen (15) chapters, written by some of the best investigators in the country. All of thechapters are very well written, concise, informative and jam packed withthe techniques, and insights of hundreds of years of investigativeexperience. I consider each and every chapter an individual tool in myinvestigator's bag of tools. This book is not overwhelming, or a hard read, but draws you in from start to finish, like a good novel.

This is not abook that is once read and then used as a paper weight, or dust collector.Mine is on my desk, and I have and shall continue to refer to it often. There's a feeling you sometimes get when you finish a good novel, you wantto tell your friends and share the experience with others. Few textbooksevoke that feeling. This one does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Against Great Odds
Paul J. Ciolino & Grace E. Castle have dedicated thenselves to working for those who are unfortunate, wrongly convicted and incarcerated. Usually they are poor as well and unable to hire people to help them. As criminaldefense investigators, they are not in the most popular of occupations.Against great odds they have enjoyed, or rather improperly convicteddefendants have enjoyed, great successes.

Thier most recentcontribution, Advanced Forensic Criminal Defense Investigations, is awonderful work, one both investigators and criminal defense lawyers willwant in thier libary. The topics covered are important and the contributingauthors have all done well.

Terence F. MacCarthy, Director, FederalDefender Program, Chicago, IL.

Product Description
U.S. Justice Department statistics indicate that only 26 percent of all rapes or attempted rapes are reported to law enforcement officials, and only slightly more than half of these result in the arrest of a suspect. Part of the problem lies in the public’s lack of faith in the criminal justice system’s ability to effectively deal with rape, victims, and the offenders.

Practical Aspects of Rape Investigation: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Fourth Edition presents several new research findings and forensic techniques which enable agencies to overcome past impediments to successful intervention and prosecution. This revision of the perennial bestseller adds several new chapters and expertly advances the state of knowledge for police, health professionals, rape crisis staffs, and other criminal justice professionals.

The book begins with a focus on the victim and reviews contemporary issues in the field of sexual violence, discusses the impact of sexual assault on the victim, and outlines victim care services. Then, from an investigative perspective, the book examines the relevance of fantasy, impulsive and ritualistic behavior, the personality of the offender, victim and offender interviews, geographic profiling, false allegations, and false confessions.

A discussion of forensics and the court includes topics on collection of evidence, medical examinations and treatment, and trial preparation issues. Lastly, the book examines special populations with sections on pedophiles, female and juvenile offenders, drug-facilitated rape, sexual sadism, abuse of the elderly, and the timely topic of educator misconduct.

This work was compiled by former FBI Agent Robert R. “Roy” Hazelwood and Ann Wolbert Burgess, Professor of Psychiatric Nursing at Boston College. The comprehensive text they have assembled is the definitive resource for those who must contend with the crimes of rape and other sexual assaults. ... Read more

Product Description
The vast majority of modern criminal investigations involve some element of digital evidence, from mobile phones, computers, CCTV and other devices. Digital Forensics: Digital Evidence in Criminal Investigations provides the reader with a better understanding of how digital evidence complements “traditional” scientific evidence and examines how it can be used more effectively and efficiently in a range of investigations.

Taking a new approach to the topic, this book presents digital evidence as an adjunct to other types of evidence and discusses how it can be deployed effectively in support of investigations. The book provides investigators/SSMs/other managers with sufficient contextual and technical information to be able to make more effective use of digital evidence sources in support of a range of investigations. In particular, it considers the roles played by digital devices in society and hence in criminal activities. From this, it examines the role and nature of evidential data which may be recoverable from a range of devices, considering issues relating to reliability and usefulness of those data.

  • Includes worked case examples, test questions and review quizzes to enhance student understanding
  • Solutions provided in an accompanying website
  • Includes numerous case studies throughout to highlight how digital evidence is handled at the crime scene and what can happen when procedures are carried out incorrectly
  • Considers digital evidence in a broader context alongside other scientific evidence
  • Discusses the role of digital devices in criminal activities and provides methods for the evaluation and prioritizing of evidence sources
  • Includes discussion of the issues surrounding modern digital evidence examinations, for example; volume of material and its complexity
  • Clear overview of all types of digital evidence

Digital Forensics: Digital Evidence in Criminal Investigations is an invaluable text for undergraduate students taking either general forensic science courses where digital forensics may be a module or a dedicated computer/digital forensics degree course. The book is also a useful overview of the subject for postgraduate students and forensic practitioners. ... Read more

Product Description
Informants are an invaluable, often instrumental, aspect of criminal investigations, but they do present certain management issues. In the necessarily clandestine world they inhabit, the imposition of institutional control presents unique challenges. Lack of training and communication among law enforcement professionals tend to condemn the same errors to be repeated time and again.
Informants and Undercover Investigations: A Practical Guide to Law, Policy, and Procedure is the most comprehensive examination of informant related issues in a single volume. Designed as a sourcebook with clear explanations of applicable laws, department policies, and time-tested procedures, each chapter addresses a distinct topic allowing the reader to quickly locate a particular subject. Using pertinent Supreme Court, federal, and state cases; statutory law; federal, state, and local law enforcement guidelines; and field-tested training materials; this book provides relevant information to all levels of investigation from basic search warrant cases to complex criminal investigations.
The author provides the most current and verified information regarding informant motivation, including mitigated sentencing and monetary compensation; recruiting; documentation; corroboration; electronic surveillance; and the witness security program. He addresses the pitfalls and management challenges of handling an informant and recommends strategies for avoiding them. Extensively researched appendices cover the Attorney General’s guidelines for use of informants, FBI undercover operations, IRS informants, DEA policy for cooperating sources, as well as examples of local policy.
Shedding light on the shadowy world of informants and undercover investigations, this book provides law enforcement officials, legal professionals, and criminal justice training institutions a single source reference to understand and streamline the use of this indispensable yet notoriously unpredictable investigative tool. ...
