Product Description
It is essential for anyone involved in the investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases to be aware of the often hidden and subtle warning signs of Munchausen by Proxy. Munchausen syndrome, classified as a mental illness, occurs when a person inflicts or fabricates illness upon themselves, often as an attention-getting device. Munchausen by Proxy (MBP) is an even more insidious disorder in that such illness or injury is inflicted upon a victim-usually a child. Awareness can stop the vicious cycle of abusePractical Aspects of Munchausen by Proxy and Munchausen Syndrome Investigation is the most comprehensive law enforcement handbook written on MBP, which is now considered an index factor in child abuse investigations and as a suspicion factor in the deaths of young children. This book offers detailed insight into the dynamics of MBP abuse and the Munchausen offender. The text chronicles real cases of MBP and Munchausen in the dominion of law enforcement and relates them to general principles of criminal investigations. With this practical guide, readers will be able to readily identify Munchausen-related behavior, apply that recognition in all types of investigations, improve the ability to detect covert or falsified crimes, have the basic knowledge to effectively combat MBP child victimization, or to successfully proscecute MBP cases. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful law enforcement field guide
Obviously the author of the one star review has had some negative experience with regards to the subject matter of this book. To call the information "outdated" is ludicrous in that so little information has been available for so long. Those that have participated in the web of deceit referred to as Munchausen's Syndrome find it difficult to accept the truth and are often on the offensive with anyone that possesses the knowledge of this disorder and its existance. Their anger and resentment is further exacerbated when this information is conveyed in any logical, fact based manner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Over-priced and Out Dated!
This witch-hunt is over. The creator of MSBP (Roy Meadow) has been exposed and discredited for his "fanciful tales" and courts all over the UK are overturning convictions. Courts in the US are recognizing that this is not a diagnosis accepted by any medical establishment.

Child abuse can not be diagnosied by warning signs and attention-seeking behavior can only be diagnosed by a qualified professional once a crime has been established by medical fact.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important work from an acknowledged expert in the field.
Detective Artingstall is well-known for her body of writings and her experience in Munchausen syndrome and Munchausen by proxy cases. In this authoritative work, she provides insights and practical assistance missingfrom most other books on the subject.Legal forms, lists of pertinentquestions to ask as cases are examined, and summaries of chapter highlightsare among the useful elements of the book. The book is also liberallydotted with case studies, including legal outcomes.Although thecopy-editing is not as thorough as I would have liked, the content of thebook is outstanding.Detective Artingstall's book will be an often-citedresource for practitioners of multiple disciplines--social work, lawenforcement, nursing, medicine, child protection, and more.Whilefactitious disorder and Munchausen syndrome have been long-acknowledged inthe professional literature, the type of abuse called Munchausen by proxyhas been recognized and studied only within the last 2 decades.Works suchas this one--based on a mastery of the literature, a wealth of personalexperience, and an abiding desire to uncover the truth (no matter howdisturbing)--will be invaluable in irrefutably establishing Munchausen byproxy as a public health and criminal-justice issue that requires ourcareful attention. ... Product Description
Less than half of all rapes believed to occur are reported to law enforcement, and of those assailants arrested even fewer are convicted of rape. This problem is now being addressed by all professions whose work brings them into contact with the victim or the offender. This Third Edition of Practical Aspects of Rape Investigation: A Multidisciplinary Approach is just that: a multidisciplinary approach. It brings into focus the five different principals involved in rape investigation: the police investigator, the examining nurse, the forensic scientist, the crisis counselor, and the prosecutor. It demonstrates how each must work together for more effective handling of all kinds of sexual assault crimes.Extensive reorganization of this new edition divides the book into four sections: oThe victim. Look at rape and the contemporary issues of rape through the victim's perspective. This section also discusses Victim Care Services and the Comprehensive Sexual Assault Assessment Tool (CSAAT).oThe investigation. Examine situations you might encounter during an investigation such as types of offenders, motivations, false allegations and false confessions, profiling the offender, child molestation, and the maligned investigator.oForensics and court. Learn what constitutes physical evidence and how to recover it, trial preparation and trial tactic issues, and the forensic examination of sexual assault victims. Everything you need to prosecute a rape case successfully is presented in this section.oSpecial populations. The world of rape has its special offenders. Focus on some of them -- juvenile sexual offenders, female sexual offenders, gerophiles, serial rapists and sexual sadists. This section also includes information on sexual predators in nursing homes.New areas of interest also include delayed reporting and mental retardation. Like both earlier editions, this third edition represents a major commitment by its authors to present the most current knowledge for the investigation and prosecution of rape cases. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars unique information about logon scripts
I have reviewed most 2008r2 books on the topic of logon scripts. I'm talking about Windows Server 2000 script style. For small 2008r2 networks they are very handy and can complement Policy based drive mapping. New Minasi's book is the best information source about implementing logon scripts and of course much more. The book is very sketchy on one crucial subject: directaccess ipv6 new "vpn" technology. Other than that it is a very useful tool for IT professionals.

Product Description
In 1984, when he was Deputy Chief Constable of Manchester, John Stalker was asked to go to Northern Ireland to investigate the alleged "shoot to kill" policy by RUC policemen of suspect terrorists. With a team of six experienced policemen he spent two years conducting three murder enquiries. He came to some very startling conclusions. Just as he was about to complete his inquiry he was called back to Manchester, suspended from duty and subjected to an intense investigation for alleged improprieties. This book reveals what Stalker found out about the RUC, the links between what he was finding and the allegations against him and the extraordinary nature of the investigation into his own career. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The RUC shoot to kill
In northern Ireland in late 1982 over a one month period six unarmed IRA suspects were shot dead. John Stalker then the deputy chief of the Greater Manchester police was brought in as an independent arbiter to investigate accusations of a "shoot to kill policy." He discovered a host of illegal activities perpetrated by the Special Branch officers of northern Ireland's police force, the Royal Ulster Constabulary. He strongly suspected that the suspects were shot as revenge due to the fact that four of them were linked by intelligence to the murder of four policeman just three weeks before their own deaths. Ultimately, he stated that the RUC Special Branch operated like a 'Central American assassination squad--truly a police force out of control'.

5-0 out of 5 stars True Story - Give the man a medal
Every professional police investigator becomes a writer, but rarely an author.Mr. Stalker does a fine job in his first, and probably only, book documenting the case that ended his career. The last thing a corrupt leader needs or wants is an honest, competent investigation of the leader's deeds. The leadership that sent John Stalker to Ireland hoped to pacify the public.Instead they got an honest investigation.Read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest Cop Framed For Uncovering Death Squads.
John Stalker; one of Britain's highest-ranking policemen, was sent to Occupied Ireland to investigate allegations that the Royal Ulster Constabulary includes Death Squads. The day before his scheduled interrogation, under caution, of Occupied Ireland's ranking RUC officer, John Hermon (now "Sir John"), he himself was falsely charged with "associating with criminals" and removed from the investigation. Though completely exonerated, Stalker still pays the price for his statement; "I'm a loyal British subject but I draw the line at murder." His 16-volume official report remains suppressed, he was ruined and his landmark book is still smeared (see accompanying review). Stalker heroically attempted in 1986 what McPhilemy's "The Committee" accomplishes in 1998. Read both books - they complement and confirm each another; also "An Index of Deaths From the Conflict in Ireland" by Malcolm Sutton. The officially-vilified John Stalker is about to be publicly vindicated along with the many decent British army officers and men who, since then, have paid horrible prices for refusing to commit war crimes in Ireland. Read Stalker! He, an honest Englishman, tried to end Britain's centuries-long genocide in Ireland in 1986. He will help to end it now if enough people discover his riveting "The Stalker Affair."

1-0 out of 5 stars drawn out
A true story that sounds like a great tale.It has everything, cover-up, government conspiracy, hero gets too close to the truth, assassinations etc.Why the low score? It goes on and on without end.His investigation come abruptly to a halt midway through the book and there are four chapters in a row of the author saying "I was doing nothing." in many unintersting ways. The narrative is painfully slow and uninteresting."A crackling good yarn" it isn't.Maybe a good yawn.Highly recommended to insomniacs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A well written volume on a very broad subject
Coyle has put together a very concise and comprehensive introductory work to a timely subject. While some background in science or forensics is useful before diving into this book, being an expert is by no means necessary. While I won't go so far as to call this volume an "easy read", it is far more understandable to the layperson then some other materials I have read on this subject.

Chapter by chapter, the authors build on the basics of plant science, physiology, and genetics to bring the reader up to a working understanding of the world of forensic botany. This is book is an excellent primer for folks who have a basic knowledge of plant science or forensic science and are interested in how the two tie together.

The example cases do so much to make the rest of the material understandable.I only wish that there were more of these cases.

To the authors - bravo and thank you! ... Read more

Product Description
This is the first volume that directly compares the practices of adversarial and inquisitorial systems of law from a psychological perspective. It aims at understanding why American and European continental systems differ so much, while both systems entertain much support in their communities. In the chapters it is demonstrated how the different systems chose different solutions for many of the same problems and how the solutions are related to the typical characteristics of the adversarial and the inquisitorial systems of criminal law. Particular emphasis is placed on problems addressed by psychological researchers and practitioners in the two systems. Chapters cover topics including: police investigative techniques, risk assessment, the death penalty, recovered memories, child witnesses, line-up practices, expert witnesses, trial procedures, and lay versus judge decision making.
