A joyful look at a serious topic
At first I thought that this will be another book with lame storyline and character, which will look at the relationship between gay people and their parents from a pesimistic point of view. However, to my delight this book really touches me with the positive attitude of a gay father who isencouraging his son to find true love.The book is not abouthomosexuality. Most of previous studies have not been successful in finding significant currency exposure. One possible explanation for this failure is that these studies ignore the asymmetric relationship between the value of a firm and exchange rate. Consequently, in this paper, I explore the possibility of asymmetric currency exposure using US bank stocks. The empirical results show that more than 80% of the sample are significantly exposed to exchange rate changes in a asymmetric way based on the tests of multi-factor model with multivariate GARCH parameterization. This empirical finding is robust to whether contemporaneous or lagged exchange rates changes are used to estimate the model. The strong evidence of asymmetric currency exposure suggests that both asymmetry and conditional heteroskedasticity play important roles in estimating currency exposure. ... Read more

In this paper we study the evolution of the US dollar real exchange rate vis-a-vis the European Union currencies in the floating post-Bretton-Woods era, both before and after the birth of the Euro. In the first period we find that most of the persistence shown by this rate is due to the movements of the US dollar during the mid-1980s. Once these effects are isolated, we can conclude that the US dollar real exchange rate exhibits stationarity with those currencies that are closely linked to the German Mark. In this paper, we investigate responses of East Asian currencies to the US dollar depreciation in the near future. First, we show that a significant depreciation of the US dollar will be necessary in order to reduce the current account deficits. Second, we show that the responses of the East Asian currencies to a sudden and sharp depreciation of the US dollar will differ with countries because of the different degree of linkages of the East Asian currencies to the US dollar. Early constructions of a single crisis index known as the exchange market pressure (EMP) index have largely been based on the fluctuations of the real or nominal exchange rate of a currency against the US dollar-the most commonly accepted anchor currency in the global market. Hardly any studies have however tested the sensitivity of this crisis index to the choice of different ''anchor'' currencies. To address this pertinent issue, our study considers the EMP indices of the Indonesian rupiah, Malaysian ringgit and Thailand baht constructed by adopting three different exchange rates-the real effective rate, the local currency against the US dollar, and the local currency against the Japanese yen for the period of 1985-2003. This study examines the change in foreign currency exposure of US-based multinational corporations (MNCs) upon implementation of SFAS 133-Disclosure of Derivative Instruments. We attempt to answer the question of whether this accounting requirement, which seeks to eliminate earnings surprises associated with derivatives, actually impacts earnings volatility and hedging strategies of exporting firms. Our results indicate that firms who were hedged prior to SFAS 133, i.e., those which managed their exposure using operational hedges, derivatives, or both, were able to decrease exposure to exchange rates following SFAS 133. However, those that were hedged prior to SFAS 133 and remained hedged following SFAS 133 did so without significantly changing their imbalances, i.e., without using operational hedges. These firms also experienced an increase in earnings volatility and a decrease in earnings predictability, as predicted by critics of the regulation. However, market value does not change following SFAS 133, implying that investors do not equate accounting regulation changes and EPS volatility with changes in cash flow. ... Read more
