The volume summarizes the results of interdisciplinaryarchaeological investigations at Aetokremnos which present theearliest well-supported evidence of humans in Cyprus and demonstratethe association of cultural remains with extinct endemic Pleistocenefauna. Alan Simmons shows that Aetokremnos is one of the fewarchaeological sites where a convincing argument can be made for humaninvolvement in Pleistocene extinctions. Highlights of FaunalExtinction in an Island Society are chapters that+ place the Aetokremnos site within a broader context + include specialist's reports that demonstrating the need forinterdisciplinary contributions+ describe the chipped stoneassemblage of a new culture+ delineate the huge faunal assemblagerecovered, and+ detail how the site was dated.Giventhe controversial nature of the subject matter, the volume will appealto a wide readership including nonanthropological archaeologiststrained in anthropological methods. Product Description
Neocolonialism is a manifestation of the ongoing nature of imperialism, suggesting an indirect form of control through economic and cultural dependence where formal methods of control like the implementation of administrative structures, the stationing of military forces, and most importantly, the incorporation of the natives of subjects of the metropolitan government are still in use. This deliberate and intentional importation of administrative structures, military force and culture has lead towards an enforced change of the Turkish speaking Cypriot community. This form of dogmatic and imposed thought meant that certain words and concepts became taboo while cultural and social values were altered to suit the needs of a colonizing state. The enforced acceptance of this has slowly but surely led to a resistive and revolutionary form of poetry stemming out ofNorthern Cyprus... ... Read more

Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The İstiklâl Mar (Independence March) is the Turkish National Anthem, officially adopted on 12 March 1921 - two and a half years before the 29 October 1923 establishment of the Republic of Turkey, both as a motivational musical saga for the troops fighting in the Turkish War of Independence, and as an anthem for a Republic that was yet to be established. Penned by Mehmet Âkif Ersoy and ultimately composed by Osman Zeki Üngör, the theme is one of affection for the Turkish homeland, freedom, and faith, of sacrifice for liberty, and of hope and devotion, explored through visual, tactile and kinesthetic imagery as they relate to the flag, the human spirit and the soil of the homeland. The manuscript by Ersoy, between the title line İstiklâl Mar and the first text line, carries the dedication Kahraman Ordumuza "To our Heroic Army", the army that won the Independence War. The lyrics reflect on the sacrifice of the soldiers during the War. The Anthem is regularly heard during state and military events, as well as during national festivals, bayrams, sporting events, and school ceremonies. Of the ten-stanza anthem, only the first two quatrains are typically sung with an upright, immobile and solemn composure. A framed version of the national anthem typically occupies the wall above the blackboard in the classrooms of every public as well as almost every private school in Turkey (accompanied by a Turkish flag, a photograph of the country's founding father Atatürk, and a copy of Atatürk's famous inspirational speech to the nation's youth). The composition has also been adopted ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=176176 ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Postwar changes greatly affected Greek Cypriot women's place in society, especially changes which gave them expanded access to education and increased participation in the work force. At the beginning of the century, the proportion of girls to boys enrolled in primary education was one to three. By 1943, some 80 percent of girls attended primary school. When, in 1960, elementary education was made compulsory, the two sexes were equally enrolled. By the 1980s, girls made up 45 percent of those receiving secondary education. Only after the mid-1960s did women commonly leave Cyprus to receive higher education. In the 1980s, women made up about 32 percent of those studying abroad. ... Read more
