    Extractions: Most people use sound to communicate in their everyday life, but a dancer on stage uses his limbs and body to do the same thing. Just like the Chinese language, Chinese dance has its own unique vocabulary, semantics, and syntactic structure that enable a dancer on stage to fully express his thoughts and feelings with ease and grace. The art of Chinese dance traces its origins to even before the appearance of the first written Chinese characters. Ceramic pots have been unearthed in the Sun Chia Chai excavation site in Ta-tung County of the western Chinese province of Chinghai that depict colorful dancing figures. A study of these archaeological artifacts reveals that people of the Neolithic Yang-shao culture of around the fourth millennium B.C. already had choreo graphed group dances in which the participants locked arms and stamped their feet while singing to instrumental accompaniment. Chinese dance was divided into two types, civilian and military, during the Shang and Chou periods of the first millennium B.C. In civilian dance, dancers held feather banners in their hands, symbolizing the distribution of the fruits of the day's hunting or fishing. This gradually developed into the dance used in the emperor's periodic sacrificial rituals held outside the city, and other religious rituals.

People of all ages are returning to partner dances such as swing, waltz, tango and many others. Not only are they returning to these dances they are adding their own twists and steps, making the dances of their own time period and are breaking down rules and barriers that have prohibited change in the competitive ballroom world. There are many theories concerning why ballroom dance has returned to the popular masses. I believe this resurgence has to do with reevaluating relationships and courtships at the end of the millennium. The joys and fears of a society are always expressed through their social dance. During the Roaring Twenties in America, we see the emergence of feminism and the influence of African Americans in the Charleston, through the separation of partners and the use of isolations and poly rhythmic movements. In the 1940's, the energy and desperation of the young G.I. going of to war explodes in his one last Lindy Hop at the U.S.O. canteen. The 1960's and early 70's partners separate again, as America's youth questions authority, explores free love and practices communal living. Today, partners are coming back together on the dance floor. After decades of free love and living with the consequences Americans are making a new commitment to monogamy. The transmission of sexually transmitted diseases proliferated during the 1970's and 80's. We now live in an age where unprotected sexual contact can threaten an individual's life. As a result, people are taking more time to get to know their potential partner's history and background. The resurgence of social ballroom dance reflects an attempt by today's youth to practice Grandma and Grandpa's courtship rituals, in hopes of getting to know their partner better and avoid meaningless liaisons.

    Extractions: The political and social upheavals that coincided with the polka craze also launched thousands of European villagers on their hazardous migration to the American Midwest. They became farmers, miners, lumberjacks, factory workers, and entrepreneurs and continued to enjoy the music and dance traditions of their homelands, passing them on to the American-born generations. Concurrent with the emergence of the polka was the booming popularity of brass bands and the invention of a variety of squeeze boxes - accordions and concertinas. Innovative tinkerers in France, England, and Germany developed a new family of instruments based on the principles of the sheng (a Chinese free reed instrument) but using the levers and springs of the Machine Age. Like the electronic keyboard in the late 20th century, the squeeze box was the 19th-century's most popular mechanical instrumental innovation. A single musician could replace a small ensemble, playing melodies and harmonies with the right hand while producing rhythmic chords and bass notes with the left. The prized possession in many an immigrant's pack was a button accordion or concertina, and that musician undoubtedly played a lot of polkas.
