It is not inclusive of all content you may need to know for the state competition. Web sites provided are for reference only and may not be exactly what students are tested on. Introduction: Because Maryland has five distinct physiographic provinces from the Coastal Plain to the Allegheny Plateau, our state features a great diversity of tree species, which makes the tree identification station of the Envirothon a challenge! During the competition, your team must identify 10 or 15 species of trees by their correct common name. Professional foresters have completed college courses in dendrology , or the science of tree identification, and have to identify literally hundreds of species of trees and shrubs by both their common and scientific names. When identifying trees, nearly all of your senses may be utilized (except hearing!), to examine the entire tree. Here are several characteristics to look for when identifying tree species: Leaf shape Are they simple or compound? Are the margins (edges) of the leaf smooth or toothed? Are the undersides of the leaves fuzzy? If the tree has needles, how many of them are in a bundle? Are the leaves scales like?
Extractions: Identifying and Classifying organisms is fundamental to Biological Sciences. All living things are divided up into groups. Each individual in the group has similar characteristics. The broadest group is the Kingdom and the most specific group is the species. Extractions: davisl@vt.edu VIRGINIA TECH'S FORESTRY CLUB PLACES IN REGIONAL COMPETITION BLACKSBURG, April 10, 1998 Virginia Tech's Forestry Club placed second in technical events and fourth overall in the recent 41st Annual Association of Southern Forestry Clubs Conclave. The technical events test what the students have learned in actual forestry classes, while the "physical" events lend some fun to the occasion. Hosted this year by Virginia Tech's College of Forestry and Wildlife Resources , the competition took place at the Holiday Lake 4-H Center in Appomattox, Va. According to faculty sponsor, Shep Zedaker, 350 students and advisors from 13 different colleges attended the three-day event. Last time the college hosted the conclave was 1991.The competition, while designed for fun and learning, has an extensive Judges' Handbook so that students know the exact criteria for the various events. Non-point events were the canoe race, pulpwood toss and tobacco spitting contest. The point events included archery, ax throwing, bow sawing, chain throwing, compass and pacing, Jack and Jill cross-cut sawing, men's cross-cut sawing, women's cross-cut sawing, diameter at breast height estimation, dendrology (tree identification), knife throwing, log birling, log chopping, log rolling, photogrammetry (identifying environmental points photographed from the air), pole classification, pole climbing, pole felling, timber estimation, wildlife identification and wood identification.

Summer Program In Field Forestry 1999 Summer Program in Field forestry 2000 FOR 301 Field dendrology Ecology Innatural resource management, the taxonomy and identification of plant http://www.esf.edu/for/drew/for301.htm
Extractions: Instructor: A.P. Drew Objectives Among several skills required for professional management of forest resources is the ability to identify important plants and other features of ecosystems one is working with. This must be done in terms that can be recognized and understood by others with similar skills. In natural resource management, the taxonomy and identification of plant species is not an end in itself, but a basis for organizing ecological and other useful information that varies among species. Therefore, the ability to recognize and catalog useful ecological and other information on species is a necessary complement to their taxonomic identification. In other words, its not enough to know them when you see them. You need also to know such things as what soils do they grow on, what elevations and aspects are they likely to be found at, what are the common plant associates, how big do they get and how long do they live, and many other variables. The purpose of FOR 301 is to develop these taxonomic and ecological skills as applied in the field, using the site of the summer program as the "case study" for this information-gathering process. The process then can be adapted to whatever region a natural resource management professionalyouis working in. More specifically, the objectives of this course are:

The event was held at Michigan Tech in Alberta, Mich. The conclave competition included timber sports on the collegiate level. "A bunch of foresters get together and do old time forestry stuff," conclave participant Jon Motsinger said. "It's kind of like back to the stuff they used to do, but its more fun and more relaxed." The club had three participants in all events, which included log rolling, speed chopping, sawing, pulp tossing, chain throwing and tobacco spitting. Academic events included dendrology (the identification of trees); wood identification (identifying lumber); and compass and traverse. While Forestry Club members were in Michigan for the conclave, they saw both rain and snow.
Forestry 151-Dendrology This course is a comprehensive introduction to the forest biology of North America, with an emphasis on identification and species ecology of trees. http://www.missouri.edu/~snrsgp/Dend_01.htm
Extractions: This course is a comprehensive introduction to the forest biology of North America, with an emphasis on identification and species ecology of trees. The course is divided into lecture and laboratory components. The lecture comprises an introduction to scientific classification of plants, coverage of morphological features that aid in identification, and study of the life history traits that are important in understanding species ecology. The temporal aspect of forest composition also is stressed by integration of the ecological concepts of succession and disturbance, and through a discussion of long-term species migrations in North America that have occurred since the last glacial age. Some attention is given to geographic distribution, economic significance and other values of woody plants (e.g., wildlife food sources, medicinal uses) for both native species and commonly encountered species that have been introduced from other parts of the world. The laboratory component is field-oriented, emphasizing identification based on knowledge of plant morphology and ecological requirements. Laboratory is conducted at a variety of local natural areas and on the University campus. Home Syllabus Documents Links ... Old Exams
