Extractions: Newspaper-to-school Partnerships Create Journalism Education Opportunities In its four-year existence, nearly 50 young people assisted by The Washington Post's Young Journalists Development Program have elected to pursue journalism degrees in college, and two have already entered the professional workforce. The YJDP entered the 2000-2001 school year with an ambitious plan to create a model program for high school and college students and advisers in Greater Washington. With industry surveys and census figures pointing to the need to improve diversity while attracting more young people to newspaper careers, the project set out to expand to additional schools in the city and suburbs. It also sought to increase opportunities in higher education and to distribute more and newer classroom equipment. To address The Post's commitment to increase job opportunities for minorities who are often underrepresented in newsrooms, special emphasis was placed on strengthening newspapers in area high schools with predominantly minority student bodies.

Extractions: How to get NIE at your school To participate in The Post's Newspaper In Education (NIE) program, teachers and principals can call The Post and set up a workshop to learn about using newspapers regularly in classes. Representatives of the Educational Sales and Services Department will go to the school and meet with an individual teacher or the principal or attend a staff meeting and give a brief presentation about The Post's NIE program. If a teacher decides to use the NIE program, the teacher or teachers can schedule one-on-one training sessions to help use the newspaper most effectively in the classroom. Throughout the year, The Post accepts donations from companies and individuals as part of The Washington Post Partners In Education program to fund NIE. This allows most schools to receive classroom sets of The Washington Post as well as newspaper-related curriculum and other resources at no cost to the school. If you are interested in learning more about putting The Washington Post's NIE program in your child's school, call The Post's Educational Sales and Services Department, (202) 334-4544.
