The authors focus on common elements that help produce successful outcomes and provide profiles of more than 50 prevention programs. A new Urban Institute study reviewing major, recent national surveys tracking teen involvement with drugs, alcohol, smoking, sexual activity, fighting, and other risk behaviors. The report shows a decline in overall risk-taking among white and African-American, but not Hispanic high school students. The report also finds that those teens involved with 2 or more risk behaviors—such as drinking and smoking, or fighting and alcohol—are responsible for most of the chances teens take with their health. But lead author Laura Lindberg finds that even these multiple risk takers can be reached.

Guest Book In this issue: Influx of Funding to District of Columbia Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage Programs Washington, DC, recently received two grants totaling over one million dollars for abstinence-only-until-marriage programs. Over $750,000 was awarded to the DC Department of Human Services from the Special Projects of Regional and National Significance-Community Based Abstinence Education (SPRANS-CBAE) program. A $300,000 single-source grant was also awarded to the DC-based Best Friends Foundation. The District currently receives $120,000 in federal Title V abstinence-only funding and matches that with $120,000 from the District budget. The second grant is for the Best Friends Foundation, a DC-based abstinence-only-until-marriage program. This grant is from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Using technology is no longer a luxury in the field of school libraries, but a requirement," wrote one of the finalists of the 1997 Gale DISCovering Program/MultiMedia Schools Information Technology Award. In school after school where this premise is only partially understood, technology is an "add-on"—something that is tacked on to a school program, not seamlessly integrated into the fabric of the school community. Not so in the five school media centers that earned a place in this year's Gale Research/MultiMedia Schools "winner's circle." All of these media centers serve as the technology wellspring for their schools. In these schools technology is harnessed; it is put to work for educational goals in the media center and throughout the school. It is not an "add-on," but the backbone that leverages information resources well beyond the walls of the media center. "Our goal is to achieve a library without walls and an information center without limits," wrote another finalist. In order to achieve this vision, media specialists are actively engaging themselves in school activities. Ongoing staff development provided by the media center has created a "teacher renewal," observed a middle school principal. "Technology helps bring people together" and creates a different learning experience for both teachers and students. What about those teachers who are reluctant to get involved with the technology? One student put us straight on that: "Teachers get reputations [among the students] you know. Students know which teachers stand up in front of the podium and lecture, and they don't sign up for those courses...."
