Vouchers: This is one of the greatest threats to the viability of our public schools. We support the right of every young person to a public school education. Private schools do not guarantee the acceptance of every child. In general, we are against the privatization of public functions, such as this.

The seeds of higher education for the District were planted in 1851 when Myrtilla Miner founded a "school for colored girls". In 1879, Miner Normal School became a part of the public school system. Similarly, Washington Normal School, established in 1873 as a school for white girls, was renamed Wilson Normal School in 1913. In 1929, by an act of Congress, both schools became four-year teachers colleges and the only institutions of public higher education in the city. Years later, after the long awaited Supreme Court desegregation decision, the two schools united in 1955 to form the District of Columbia Teachers College. However, for many residents who did not wish to become teachers or who were both black and poor, the opportunity for advanced technical training or study for a liberal arts degree was an unattainable goal. Years of persistent lobbying for comprehensive public higher education by District residents and others caused President John F. Kennedy, in 1963, to appoint a commission to study the District's needs. It was no surprise that the Chase Commission found a definite and compelling need for public higher education in the District of Columbia. There was a demand for instruction that was affordable, and there was an overwhelming desire for learning that would enable residents to participate fully in the unique life of the city.

The automotive repair industry needs qualified female employees to help lower its employment deficit, and we should not lose these potential employees due to outdated stereotypes. Estimate the projected deficit in technicians within the automotive repair industry over the next 10 years. Does around 50,000 employees sound right? How about 100,000? Not even close. Over the next 10 years the projected deficit in automotive repair technicians is a whopping 418,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook. Women account for nearly half of today's work force. Why, in an industry desperately in need of qualified employees, are there so few female automotive repair technicians? The National Women's Law Center appears to have found the answer. A report released by the center June 6 examines sex bias in high school vocational and technical programs, a violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

For the second consecutive year in a row, Columbia Central High School has been awarded the coveted Governor's Cup for academic excellence and performance of its graduating class. Sixty eight members of the class of 2001 scored in levels one or tow in all categories of the Michigan Educational Assessment Program, (MEAP), that earned them each a $2,500.00 scholarship that can be used for post graduate studies at any college, university, or vocational school of their choice. The class earned a total of over $170,000 for their achievements. This award has been sponsored for the past two years by the Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan Department of the Treasury. On Thursday Feb. 14., representatives from Columbia Central High School, Superintendent Mr. Brent Beamish, Principal Mr. Robert Scheick, Math Department Chairman Mr. Steve Malewitz, Social Studies Chairman Mr. Gary Huntley and Columbia School Board President Mr. Jeff Anderson all attended the award ceremony at the State of Michigan Public Library and Museum in Lansing where eleven high schools from around the state were presented the Governor's Cup Trophy. Only seventy eight high schools in the State of Michigan received this award. Receiving this award is a true reflection of the quality of education and the efforts of the teaching staff of the entire Columbia School District. The trophy is now displayed, along with last years class of 2000 Governor's Cup, in the Hall of Honor at Columbia Central High School.

Wins Training Agreement with the DC Public Schools When District of Columbia Public Schools officials began investigating the possibility of offering computer training to its vocational education teachers, finding the right training firm was no small task. The District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) heard presentations from Microsoft among others, but it wasn't until Janice Cannon, State Coordinator for Guidance and Counseling, was reading the newspaper one day in early December that a metro-area training company caught her eye. Janice, who serves as Program Coordinator for this training project, saw the article featuring the LTC's Technology Training Center 's December Grand Opening in Greenbelt, Maryland. The more she read, the more intrigued she became. In early January, she placed a call to LTC and briefly described the district's training needs. After the initial presentation and proposal phase, LTC shook hands with the District of Columbia Public Schools agreeing to act as training provider for its vocational education, management and computer education teachers. A project of this nature is key to LTC President & CEO, Rozita Wilson. "While it is important to meet the training needs of adult learners, I am excited because I know that in this case young people will be directly impacted as well" she noted. Wilson, herself the mother of two young boys adds, "I am eager to assist the DC Public Schools as they invest in each teacher and foster the growth of their students."
