Search Table of Contents Other Resources Springboard diving was added in 1908 and platform diving in 1912, when the combined event was dropped. Women's platform diving was also added in 1912, followed by women's springboard diving in 1920. From 1912 through 1928, divers were ranked by ordinals; that is, the places assigned them by the judges. Thus, if there were three judges and a diver was ranked first by two and second by one, that diver's score would be 4 (1+1+2). A diver with a lower point score but higher ordinals could therefore win the gold medal. Since 1932, divers have been ranked by the total number of points for all their dives. The score for a dive is the score awarded by the judges, on a scale from to 6, multiplied by the dive's degree of difficulty. The degree of difficulty ranges from a low of 1.2 to a high of 3.6. The newest discipline, synchronized diving, became an Olympic event in 2000.

Although it is impossible to say when man first plunged headfirst into water some suggestions date back at least to the time of Greece's ancient Games the British were the first to take the sport of diving seriously, diving into ponds. The only dive then was what is now known as the forward dive straight. The sport took a more artistic side in the early 1800s, when Swedish and German gymnasts took their acrobatics to the beach to practice their jumps and twists over the water. Diving was one of the two introductory events at the 1904 Games in St. Louis. Springboard diving joined the original platform event four years later and women first competed in the event in 1912 at Stockholm with their own platform event, and women's springboard followed in 1920.

Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.

Two years ago, however, she regained the itch and began her comeback. No longer the dominant diver in the world, she was still formidable. Entering Thursday night's three-meter springboard final, Fu trailed teammate Guo Jingjing by 8.4 points through five semifinal dives. Guo maintained her lead through the evening's first two attempts, then nearly surrendered it on the third when Fu nailed her back 2 1/2 somersault in a pike position. However, the New Zealand judge inexplicably gave her a 5.5, keeping her in second. Fu had momentum, though, and she passed Guo on her fourth dive of the final and ninth overall doing a reverse 2 1/2 somersault in a pike position to go up by 1.68 points.

Australian Olympic historian Harry Gordon discusses the many Olympic athletes who have fought for their nation during wartime. He begins with the story of Claude Smeal, an Australian soldier who ran the 1952 marathon. Further discussion centered on several British soldiers who honored themselves both on the battlefield and the Olympic arena. Gordon ends the article by discussing the relationship of Jesse Owens and Lutz Long, which began at the 1936 Olympics, and ended with the death of Long while fighting in North Africa during World War II. The Olympic Bribery Scandal (by Bill Mallon). pp. 11-27. This long article attempts to be the most complete, and accurate, summary of the events surrounding the Olympic Scandal of 1999. The article is based on primary documentary sources, including all the reports issued in 1999 that evaluated the status of the scandal. These included the Pound Report (IOC), the Mitchell Report (USOC), the Sheridan Report (Sydney), and the Salt Lake City Board of Ethics Report (Salt Lake City 2002). Extractions: OLYMPIC HISTORY Springboard diving was born at the 1908 Games for men and in 1912 a women's platform event was introduced, though it was not until 1920 that women took part in a springboard event. In those early days, the swallow dive, a straight plunge forward was the favoured leap. However, in the 1920s, pikes, tucks and twists became more common, resulting in dives involving somersaults. The British "Fancy Diving" team from 1908 Sweden and Germany dominated the sport in its infancy, while the US took the lead from the late 1920s to the 1980s, when China, today's masters took over as the world's greatest diving nation. Pat McCormick, of the US, won both women's titles in 1952 and 1956, the latter just eight months after becoming a mother. Her double double success was repeated by Greg Louganis, of the US, in 1984 and 1988. The accident in which he cracked his head on the highboard and had to receive stitches led to a tightening of safety measures after the diver revealed some time later that he had been carrying the HIV virus.

These manoeuvres include pikes, tucks, twists and somersaults and can be performed in forward or reverse directions. Of course, times have changed somewhat since the earliest diving competitions. Diving competitions began in Britain in the 1880s, after the sport began in Europe in the 17th century as a training drill for gymnasts. Those early competitions were held in ponds, with divers forced to compete for space with other pond users. The sport made its Olympic debut at St Louis in 1912 under the label fancy diving.
