"Domestic violence should be called undomestic because there is nothing domestic about beating somebody," Stovall said. "We need to teach young people that it's not OK to hit and abuse." Kansas will have some assistance fighting crime when it receives $426,000 from the Federal Crime Bill in mid-December. The Kansas State Child Death Review Board, which Stovall assists, recently released an annual report on the causes of death for children under 18 in Kansas between July 1, 1993, and June 30, 1994. Research showed of the 466 child deaths that occurred during the study, 34 were homicides, 18 were suicides, 64 were caused by vehicular accidents, 31 were from non-vehicular accidents, 53 were caused by Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, 260 deaths were natural causes and six deaths were undetermined.

He took that action with a belief that domestic violence needed organized attention from the highest levels of government and that there was a need to increase the awareness of the Commonwealth to the prevalence of the crime and its harmful effects. Five forms of relationship violence exist; physical, emotional, economic, psychological, and sexual. In physical abuse, a person attempts to inflict harm on another. This includes but is not limited to pushing, shoving, slapping, punching, hitting with a blunt object, stabbing or shooting. In economic abuse, the perpetrator puts the victim in a financially dependent position (Chez, 1994). The abuser decides how the money will be spent. This occurs several ways and across all economic classes. Some examples of maintaining financial control are, not allowing the victim to work. Another is making the victim keep detailed records of every penny spent. A third way is for the abuser to refuse to go to work. Though instillation of fear, psychological abuse is the attempt ensure the victim only has the abuser to rely on. Threats of violence may be directed at the victim or may include suicide threats. Intimidation may be attacks on property, a loved one or pets. They may also be stalking, or screaming at the victims face. The abuser gains control through isolation and disinformation. It can be subtle or blatant. Subtle includes comments like wanting to be with the victim all the time because they love them so much. Disinformation tactics are lies perpetrators use to distort the victims sense of reality such as lies about legal rights (Ganley, 1996).
