The name "guinea" comes from the price people paid for them when they were introduced in Britain long ago. These are friendly animals that rarely bite and will "talk" to their people. There are even shows for them, many sponsored by the American Rabbit Breeders Association. Guinea pigs have minimal care requirements. They need a large, safe cage. Metal is preferable to wood, as they will chew. Bedding can be shavings (pine is better than cedar, due to the aromatic oils in cedar which can be harmful over time) or hay. Ideally, your guinea pig would not be on plain metal wire, which can cause foot sores.
