Extractions: I had lived for 12 years in Montserrat until my home and business were effectively demolished by Hurricane Hugo, when I rehomed my animals and came back to live in St. Lucia. I left behind a number of donkeys, mostly in care of farmers, with gardens in the Soufriere hills, as I had lived and worked below Chances Peak, in the South of the island. After the volcano erupted in September 1997, WSPA had herded all the animals abandoned in the South into the safe zone. The safe zone is a small portion of the island, largely in the rocky, dry North and hard enough to farm in, without rampant donkeys destroying crops, and tearing washing off lines, and worse still, increasing in numbers every year. WSPA rounded up the worst offenders, corraled them and started looking for solutions.
