Returning to his home town with a college degree, he continues to teach in the same one-room school of his youth. Struggling to make a difference in an oppressive time and place, Grant is called upon by two local women, Tante Lou and Miss Emma, to visit the town prison. There, Jefferson, a simple young man, has been convicted of a murder he did not commit and sentenced to die like an animal. Jefferson is full of rage and resentment, and the women are convinced that somehow he must be taught to die not like an animal, but like a man. It falls upon the teacher to enrich a life he cannot save and, in so doing, somehow redeem his own, by teaching one young man. Based on the New York Times No. 1 bestselling novel and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award.

MENTOR, MENTOR, ON THE NET who participate in various newsgroups, mailing lists and message point of mentoringis to teach someone how to s 1989 military courtroom drama) that Nicholson http://www.wwma.com/kamt/mentor.html
Extractions: Theres an old saying that if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. But if you teach him how to fish, he will never starve. As the Internet has fostered the growth of an online MT community, many experienced medical transcriptionists have generously provided word help and technical tips to their colleagues in need using venues such as the KAMT-list, sci.med.transcription newsgroup and Arleen McGoverns superb www.mtdesk.com website. Unfortunately, one of the basic misassumptions about the Internet is that the veterans in any profession who participate in various newsgroups, mailing lists and message boards have nothing else to do with their time except act as free reference sources to those who are too lazy to do their own research. Another misconception is that the designation of someone as a mentor is a unilateral decision. In other words, someone wishing to be mentored can arbitrarily choose who they think should mentor them without necessarily bothering to ask if that person has the time, energy or desire to commit to such a project. As a result, many veterans are confronted with a Gimme, gimme, gimme style of questioning which soon makes it obvious that the person asking all these questions is too lazy to pick up a reference book and find the answer. When a newbie is seen asking the same questions over and over again in different Internet venues questions that can easily be answered in basic reference books with a minimum amount of effort those who could be mentors often pull back and stop answering the newbies desperate pleas for assistance. Why? Because the whole point of mentoring is to teach someone how to develop the professional skills to survive on ones own.

Extractions: I start with perhaps the most obvious use of a computer, to make teaching resources for classroom use. Some worksheets that I make are to support the language learning aims of the syllabus, while others are made to more closely meet the students' needs or wants, by allowing them to be part of the resource creating process. For example, to review a topic, or a language structure, I hand out slips of paper and ask students to write down two or three questions that they would like to ask their classmates. In a preformatted Excel page, it is a relatively easy task to quickly type, sort and edit the students' questions, before pasting into

Extractions: Nov 1985 News The SLA, whose Picture Division from time to time issues the important publication Picturescope , has relocated in Washington, DC so that it can take a more active role in legislation and policy formulation at the national level. Its new address is 1700 18th St., NW, Washington, DC 20009 (202/ 234-4700). The Mobile Conservation Laboratory Programme was established in 1980 to provide conservation assistance and advice on the care of collections to museums and galleries across Canada and to provide a unique training opportunity for recent graduates of conservation programs at the university and community level. The program will be discontinued after its 1986 season. The Canadian Conservation Institute, which issued this announcement, gave no reason for the discontinuance. Until November 30, it is accepting applications for the mobile lab's services in its last year. These include treatment, consultation on preventive conservation and conservation surveys for Canadian collections. Visits may be two days to three weeks. The people at the Prints and Photographs Division at the Library of Congress have found a way to feed new archival negative sleeves into a Minolta photocopier to print the information from the old negative jackets on them. They are putting the same information onto new shelf list cards by feeding them into the machine the same way. a team of three can rehouse 230 negatives and make 230 shelflist cards an hour, which is about ten times as fast as they could do it by hand. The key to the process is use of the Minolta, which will accept heavy card stock if it is fed by hand.

One responsibility of the director is to make sure the WRRC has the money, staff, facilities and other resources to keep serving the campus, and that those resources get used wisely. I keep our political fences mended, and represent the Center to the campus and community. Like other staff, I have a role in deciding on programs, services and priorities of the WRRC. When advocacy or activism is called for, I'm there. As for specialties, I know more than most about gender dynamics in the classroom, and about how to get things done in the UC Davis bureaucracy. Other topics I know something about: sexual harassment, sexual discrimination, and work/family balance. Peg Swain, Co-Director
