Extractions: In 2002 when I was researching Superblock, Alan Dunn (FACT) and I went to a demolition. The second of Sheil Park's tower blocks was coming down and there was a festive atmosphere to the event. People sat around in a school playground waiting for mid -day. Myth has it they always demolish on Sundays, always at mid day. As the building fell it was like an old man falling over. The clouds of dust that spilled around its corpse were like its ghost. Josie, the woman who had "pushed the button" was one of the tenants I had been collecting stories from for the play, and she told me that she felt guilty - as if she hadn't just killed a building but had erased all the lives that had been lived there. As people applauded the buildings demise I found it to be one of the saddest and yet most beautiful things I had ever seen. I felt sorry for the building and wanted it to rise back into the sky, like in one of those backwards films you'd see on Fred Dibnah. But the building was gone forever.
Extractions: - but the question still lingered, if all wish to be young and 'happening' in the argot of the day, who can teach us about growing up? About assuming responsibility? About understanding life's passage, but also its end? For if youth is about raging against the dying of the light, then who is teaching us to live with the inevitability of death, but also with the wisdom that a knowledge of death can sometimes bring? Poet Peter Porter was best on this.

Extractions: South Pacific Regional Environment Programme Press Release 26 August 1999 Sub-regional Teacher Training Workshop Ten teachers from six Pacific island countries are on their way back to their classrooms this weekend, enthusiastic about the new techniques they have developed to teach their children about environmental issues. A key focus of the workshop was to provide participants with the skills and information to teach environmental issues within their existing school curriculum. Experiential learning activities and the need to focus on values education was highlighted. In closing the workshop, Mr Tevita Malolo, Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Natural Resources, noted that values or ethics are an integral aspect of environmental education. "Without values, children and adults alike, fail to develop a lasting concern and sensitivity or passion for environmental issues," he said. Participants said at the end of the workshop that they particularly appreciated being able to share experiences and ideas with teachers from different countries. Ms Teimana Avanitele, from Tuvalu expressed her renewed enthusiasm to educate on environmental issues in her country. "I now feel that I have the confidence to return to my country and not only teach about the environment but also make changes in my own lifestyle to do what I can to protect the environment," she said. The participant from Niue, Ms Maria Lagiono, had similar reflections. "I came to the right workshop," she said. "I see the environment as something big but I now have the confidence to do small things within my school and in the community to start to make a difference."
