Description of the course The course consists of 10 weekly lessons of 3 hours.`A great deal of attention is paid to communication skills by reading texts, listening, video, much conversation, (thematical) vocabulary extension and idiom. Each lesson will have a central theme, introduced by a listening - or videofragment. Although the emphasis in this course will be on communication skills, grammar will be practised as well. Course materials will be supplied during the course. Admission Participants who have passed the NT2 1 level examination are welcome to follow the course. Students who have not passed or who did not sit the exam may be admitted upon recommendation of the teacher. Students who have followed a Dutch course elsewhere may be admitted after an intake interview or an entry test. Students will find information about several papers and several Dutch internet links relating to the papers. The principal emphasis in Part 1A is on written and spoken language, with an introduction to Dutch literature for ab initio students. The compulsory literature paper for first-year, post A-level students and second-year ex-ab initio students covers the period since 1860, a time of renewal in the literature of the Low Countries. In Part 1B and Part II, scheduled papers can be chosen covering aspects of the literature, culture, art and history of the medieval period, the seventeenth century, or the modern period (1880 to the present day). There will also be a paper on the history and varieties of the Dutch language. Dutch literature and art are also represented in the comparative papers in the Faculty. We take a special interest in the medieval, sixteenth and nineteenth-century literature of the Low Countries. There is only a little truth to that fable. At some point internationals feel the need to learn the funny Dutch language with all its peculiarities and horrible guttural g-sounds. During the intercultural evenings in Amsterdam, organised by ISMA (International Students Meetingpoint Amsterdam), students can sign up for a basic Dutch course. Alex Grozev, a participant from Bulgaria, shares his experiences. Every international student is excited when he or she arrives in Holland, country of tulips, windmills and canals. Most of the Dutch people, especially the young ones, speak English freely. However, learning Dutch becomes a necessity when one wants to communicate more widely. I was one of twelve people who went through a basic Dutch course for beginners. It was exciting to study Dutch with students from various cultural backgrounds: Russia, Ukraine, China, Germany, Yugoslavia, the Czech Republic and the US. The lessons were somewhat a struggle for us, since we all had our own studies going on at the same time. I think the major problem common to all was one of prioritising: to study Dutch and do homework when a research paper must be finished the next day.
