Full of great ideas!

This book apart from telling you what to use in your workshops, it also
tells you what not to do and why!
Being a professor for more than 20 years, I recommend this book.

Interesting data; too much editorializing
I really expected more from a book presented as "a careful examination of historical evidence." There was historical evidence a plenty, and that is a real service. But there were also distracting (and annoyingly frequent) predictions, usually prefaced with "when in the future women will be ordained priests and deacons in the Catholic Church..." I found this intrusive, as if the author couldn't resist showing his own hand (and his smirking face) now and again. This is going beyond "a careful examination of historical evidence" and it diminished the book's value to such a degree that I only forced myself to finish it, and even then, I found myself wondering just how trustworthy its presentation of history was. So much confidence in one's prophetic abilities is out of place in a study of history.

Great conversation-starter for groups in discernment
Seldom does homosexuality within the context of faith get treated with such a thoughtful, balanced effort as this book offers. Everyone, from both sides of the discussion, will learn something from this book, and it can provide a very constructive platform for healthy dialogue for any community interested in finding common ground around a potentially divisive issue.

A few good chapters
This book contains a few good chapters, but overall it was lacking in philosophical and critical content. Many of the chapters present a "case-study" method of ethical inquiry by presenting the readerwith stories about this issue in the lives of people.Although a fewchapters make some good points, it seemed to miss out on some key issues oronly briefly touch upon those issues. ... Enjoyed seeing this issue discussed from Biblical standpoint
This book presented opposing viewponts on capital punishment from two prominent Biblical theologians. While I did not agree with either theologian on all points, this somewhat overly scholarly debate did help me reexamine my own beliefs and determine why I believe what I believe.

Dr. House argued that capital punishment is not only condoned but also commanded by God in the Old Testament, and he used New Testament passages to affirm those commands were universal and unchanging.His arguments relied heavily on his interpretion of Genesis 9 (the Noachian Covenant) as a universal mandate establishing God's relationship to man, and man's relationship to each other.Unfortunately, I felt he took the "easy" way out by claiming that the entire Mosaic Law had been invalidated by Christ and therefore was not relevant to his case.I think a more fair analysis would have been to divide the Mosaic Laws into moral, religous, and legal subcomponents and deal with eachseparately.

Dr. Yoder used a standard "Christ-transforming-culture" argument to assert that God's acceptance of capital punishment has changed from Biblical times to today.The themes of Christ's teachings have helped evolve modern culture past the need for retribution-based systems of punishment (i.e., some Scriptures have to be interpreted in terms of the cultural bias of its authors). Yoder explains away the Noachian Covenant as a reflection of an obsolete era and basis his arguments primarily on John 8, where Jesus pardons an alduteress about to be stoned to death.

I really enjoyed seeing this contemporary issue discussed from Scriptural postions.Both men made interesting arguments, but I felt Dr. Yoder did not respect or believe in the infallibility of Scripture and tried to use secular sources (modern psychology and social science) to bend his interpretations. ... This first study of the antipolygamy movement in the United States traces its growth from a Utah-based women's group into a national crusade where it sparked a debate in suffrage politics. The author analyzes this debate, highlighting the differing views of marriage, family, and the role of women held by suffrage leaders, Mormon women, and antipolygamy reformers. Antipolygamy rhetoric masked a more significant debate within women's groups about the structure and meaning of the American family. Coming in the post-Civil War period, the antipolygamy agenda reflects an attempt to "re-construct" the Republican family, diminish patriarchal authority, and improve the status of women. The reaction of the antipolygamy women was also more than a struggle for power. Their adherence to the Republican family was a discourse involving not just rhetoric, but a whole range of cultural forms and institutions which provided women with status, moral authority, and an identity. Often the fear of polygamy was mingled with anxiety over the increase in divorce and the emergence of the new woman.Ironically, by the end of the long congressional battle over Utah and the Mormons, both the rhetoric of polygamy and antipolygamy were used against the women's movement. ...
