More importantly, it emphasizes prompt and effective action insustaining life and preventing or minimizing further suffering and disability.First aid is the emergency care given to the sick, injured, or wounded beforebeing treated by medical personnel. 5-0 out of 5 stars US Army Survival Manual: FM 21-76
exactly as described, brand new condition, e.t.a. on delivery was 4-6 weeks, received in Australia in 2 weeks. Nice service all round thank you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great :l
A good book with very useful info, but I was hoping for some color photos or something so I could better identify edible plants, etc. There are only line drawings, which makes it hard to identify the plants, etc. I think there are newer more recent editions that one could find. I plan on trying to find one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is core survival information and education, a good buy.
This is core education that should be required for all. There is more than enough information here that has been proven time and time again that works. It will make you a better outdoors person, save your life and give you the information to make living off the land much easier.Small example, in the morning placing rags around your ankles and walking in high grass to collect the dew (water) off of the grass, so you can give yourself some drinking water. The manual is written to help ensure understanding, which is great for this type of stuff.Overall and very good buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Avery good buy
This remains an excellent buy, the information enclosed, essential fundamentals. This edition does not have the slick color illustrations of what is edible and what isn't that the original does. This does nothing to diminish what it DOES contain.
A good item for any outdoorsman's shelf

3-0 out of 5 stars You have to decipher good information from outdated information
The U.S. Army Survival Manual: FM 21-76 although written in 1970 is still a valuable resource if you are able to decipher the valuable information from the not so valuable. A word of caution that some of the material is outdated and there have been significant advances in technology and gear. Many of the drawings aren't too bad although color photographs would be a very beneficial update to replace the drawings.

Chapters 1 and 2 on the Will to Survive and Survival Planning are a good introduction that really doesn't change much with time. Gear and technology may change but the fundamental principles remain intact even with the passage of time.

Chapter 4: Survival Medicine would really benefit from being updated. There have been significant changes in medicine and medical procedure since the writing of this book. I would recommend skipping this chapter and instead taking either a first aid course or an emergency medical technician (EMT) course to learn the latest and most effective medical procedures available.

The chapter on Wild Plants for Food is a bit short in length and detail. This is one of those areas that you don't really want to make a mistake or you may pay a hefty price with gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration or severe stomach pain. Skip the plants and go for meat as it is much more nutritious, provides better caloric intake and valuable protein.

The chapter on shelters is good although at times you may feel that some information is lacking and you need more specific detail. This chapter will expose you to many different types of shelter that are commonly used in survival situations. Most are still very relevant and useful today.

Overall, I would recommend this book as a starting point to obtain basic information. There is a lot of information although you will need to conduct further research and practice to see what works, what does not work, along with the ins and outs of the minutia of survival. Good luck.

Product Description
This electronic book on CD-ROM presents a complete reproduction of a major U.S. Army Training Circular, TC 21-24, Rappelling - Tower, Ground, Helicopter, Fast-Rope Insertion and Extraction, Knots, and more. This circular provides basic rappelling techniques to soldiers and leaders for the conduct of rappelling operations. It serves as the primary reference for both resident and nonresident instruction presented to cadets, officer candidates, and both commissioned and noncommissioned officers. This circular also discusses several advanced techniques dealing with infiltration and exfiltration. Safety is always the most important consideration when conducting training. This circular provides guidelines for commanders to conduct operations safely. Commanders at all levels must analyze the complete training event to determine the degree of risk involved to men and or equipment. After determining the risks, risk reduction options or controls will be integrated into the training activity. These options or controls may range from a safety briefing or providing additional safety resources, to selecting other means of accomplishing the mission. Rappelling, FRIES, and SPIES operations are inherently dangerous; therefore, the safety notes and considerations presented in this circular are the minimum acceptable standards. TOWER RAPPELLING - The introduction to rappelling is taught on a static tower. Using the building block approach to training, soldiers systematically progress to more demanding platforms, including taller static towers, and finally to helicopters. The static tower used may vary in size and height from 34 to 90 feet. The concept of learning the basic rappelling techniques before helicopter operations does not vary. (Units may conduct ground training and wall-side tower rappelling without a rappel master. In this case, the unit commander would be responsible for the safety of the rappelling training.) BELAYER - Belay requirements are a subtask of basic rappel requirements. Soldiers must know how to belay before conducting rappelling training. The belayer - · Assumes a position at the base of the lane about one pace away from the tower area. Ensures that the rappel ropes are even with the ground during tower rappels. Loosely holds the rappel rope with both hands so as not to interfere with the rappeller but still be able to stop the rappeller should he fall. Immediately stops the rappeller by pulling downward on the rappel ropes if the rappeller shouts "falling" or loses control of his brake hand during descent. Does not wear gloves to ensure a firm grip on the rappelling rope. Watches the rappeller at all times, and maintains constant voice or visual contact. Wears a helmet to prevent injuries from falling debris. BELAY SAFETY - The belay safety must be ranger- or air assault-qualified. He ensures belay personnel are performing their duties properly. Rappel training requires one belay safety for each two rappel stations. In addition, this disc includes a comprehensive collection of U.S. Army training circulars (TCs), with dozens of detailed military training documents covering a wide variety of topics. They provide a wealth of information on military training!Bonus training circular contents include: Aircrew Training Manuals (ATM) AH-1, Utility Helicopter, C-12, Kiowa, H-60, AH-64A, OH-58D, AH-64D * Tactical NBC Handbook * Engineer Qualification Tables * Float Bridging * Air Base Damage Repair * Machine Tools * Combined Arms Training Strategy (CATS) * Starlight Scope * Military Skiing * Religious Support Handbook * Aviation Element Handbook * Unmanned Aircraft System ATM * Environment * Geospatial Guide * Stryker Driver * Communications and Electronics Fundamentals: Basic AC/DC, Solid State Devices, Wave Propagation and Antennas, Digital Computers * Welding * Percussion * Band Section Leader * Cold Weat ... Product Description
Initiated in 1950, this 2007 edition is the latest in a classic series of books of the same title. Journalist-historian S. L. A. Marshall wrote the first at the behest of Gen. George C. Marshall, who formed the great citizen army of World War II. The general believed officers of all services needed to base their professional commitment on a common moral-ethical grounding, which S. L. A. Marshall set out to explain. Ever since, these books have provided a foundation of thought, conduct, standards, and duty for American commissioned officers.

Available now to the general public, this new edition takes the series’ inspirational premise into the new century. It educates officers of all services, as well as civilians, about the fundamental moral-ethical requirements of being a commissioned officer in the armed forces of the United States. Understanding the common foundation of commissioned leadership and command of U.S. military forces is essential for achieving excellence in the joint operations of today’s combat environment. This philosophy unites the officers of the uniformed services in the common calling of supporting, defending, and upholding the Constitution in service to their country. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential read for any officer of any branch
This book should be on the essential reading list for any junior officer in the armed services of the United States. It provides significant information on the history of the profession and outlook of each of the services.

It develops the though process of what being an officer means as a profession including the duties and responsibilities to society and your Soldiers/Sailors/Airman/Marines.

I can not recommend it in high enough terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable, meaningful reference.
This 2007 edition of a classic adds to a series of books of the same title, written by a journalist and historian who wrote the first book at the behest of Gen. George C. Marshall, who believed all officers needed to base professional commitments on a common moral-ethical foundation, presented here. Any military or public library strong in officer inspiration needs THE ARMED FORCES OFFICER: it updates scenarios to modern times, covers everything from accountability issues to honor, respect and duty concerns, and it surveys training routines and strategies across the board. Product Description
In the military, information technology (IT) has enabled profound advances in weapons systems and the management and operation of the defense enterprise. A significant portion of the Department of Defense (DOD) budget is spent on capabilities acquired as commercial IT commodities, developmental IT systems that support a broad range of warfighting and functional applications, and IT components embedded in weapons systems. The ability of the DOD and its industrial partners to harness and apply IT for warfighting, command and control and communications, logistics, and transportation has contributed enormously to fielding the world's best defense force.

However, despite the DOD's decades of success in leveraging IT across the defense enterprise, the acquisition of IT systems continues to be burdened with serious problems. To address these issues, the National Research Council assembled a group of IT systems acquisition and T&E experts, commercial software developers, software engineers, computer scientists and other academic researchers. The group evaluated applicable legislative requirements, examined the processes and capabilities of the commercial IT sector, analyzed DOD's concepts for systems engineering and testing in virtual environments, and examined the DOD acquisition environment. The present volume summarizes this analysis and also includes recommendations on how to improve the acquisition, systems engineering, and T&E processes to achieve the DOD's network-centric goals. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book!
Do not buy this book no matter what! The older version is cheaper and almost identical missing only a list of acronyms in the back which is neither necessary nor required. This book is horribly written as others have already commented. This book has clearly never been edited or read, even by its authors.Misspellings everywhere, sentences that don't make sense and very repetitive.Sad to see a company would publish it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Defense Budget Text
The product was in good condition. The text itself is not an easy read. It has too many acronyms which distract from the content. You will end up looking back to figure out what given acronyms stand for andf lose track of the reading.

The author is my instructor. He's a super nice guy, genuinely concerned with his students and generally quite humorous. The book, however, is a disaster.Personally, I'd be embarassed to put my name on the cover. There is a ton of unorganized information presented in a rambling of acronyms, run on sentences and long chapters. It's extremely difficult to extract or retain any knowledge at all from this book.Your time will be better spent reading the phone book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Judge a Book by its Cover...
Don't be fooled by the date for this book. The actual copy right date is 1957. I was expecting a 2007 revised FM 21-76 BUT got deceived. Whoever put this NEW cover on this old book needs to be slapped. The information in the book is alright BUT not current! NOW... IF you want a revised FM 21-76... get the June 1992 edition. This copy has more modern information that most of us are looking for AND they have color pictures of plants and snakes. VERY NICE Survival book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the real deal.
I wonder when I purchase this book about the cover becuase I had never seen a military manual with such a nice looking cover.Well you know the saying don't judge a book by it's cover. This is not a new book from the Army I found out.Should have just gotten a real military manual.
Buyer Beware.

3-0 out of 5 stars Small Price, Small reprint
Good copy reprint. Cover and pages similar to original although smaller format. For reference, perfect. Not an original document.

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible trash!!
I was writing an action novel about a unit of special forces soldiers and thought that a cool old army handbook might help me understand the mind of a US special forces soldier, so I ordered this book..
What a waste of six dollars!!!!
This is a horribly violent book that should not be sold! Anyone would be completely insane to even think about attempting anything in this horrible publication!
Don't waste your money on this book, it's just a book on making horrible violent weapons. I was very upset that something like this would be sold, especially through amazon!!

5-0 out of 5 stars nice read
unless your planning on breaking into the local armory.. not much you can use here.
but it is a good reference book.
unfortunately there should be a dis calmer..
Don't try this at home!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate, but with practice you can work out all the bugs
1) Supposed to contain recipes "safer" than the anarchist cookbook - never read it(edit: meant, that at the time I wrote this review I haven't read the ACbook yet, though now I have, but this review is correct, I read a copy of TM-31 before reviewing), but if this were true we wouldn't have anarchists anymore. Goes over some basic primaries, some of the recipes leads to unstable products, and mislabels them as high explosive

2)Could go over more third world chemical sources

3) Expanding on number 1, definitely could use more modern recipes

However that said, its a pretty good book considering it's meant for untrained army operatives in the 1960's. Though outdated in today's terms, with the right amount of tinkering you can modify and perfect the methods in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This book is jam-packed with interesting pyrotechnic expertise.I have to admit that you would have to be completely insane to do half of the things in here, but there are quite a few that are relatively sane for backyard experimentation.Great buy. ... Read more

In 1992, Congress for the first time explicitly directed the federal agencies making SBIR grants to use commercial potential as a criterion for granting SBIR awards. In response, the Department of Defense developed the SBIR Fast Track initiative, which provides expedited decision-making for SBIR awards to companies that have commitments from outside vendors. To verify the effectiveness of this initiative, the DoD asked the STEP Board to assess the operation of Fast Track. This volume of original field research includes case studies comparing Fast Track and non-Fast Track firms, a large survey of SBIR awardees, and statistical analyses of the impact of regular SBIR and Fast Track awards. Collectively, the commissioned papers and the findings and recommendations represent a significant contribution to our understanding of the SBIR program. ... Read more

A great value! Two military manuals combine into one book. If you purchase both books separate you will pay more for the books plus shipping cost.Military Mountaineering:Mountains exist in almost every country in the world and almost every war has included some type of mountain operations. This pattern will not change; therefore, soldiers will fight in mountainous terrain in future conflicts. Although mountain operations have not changed, several advancements in equipment and transportation have increased the soldiers' capabilities. The helicopter now allows access to terrain that was once unreachable or could be reached only by slow methodical climbing. This field manual details techniques soldiers and leaders must know to cope with mountainous terrain. These techniques are the foundation upon which the mountaineer must build. They must be applied to the various situations encountered to include river crossings, glaciers, snow-covered mountains, ice climbing, rock climbing, and urban vertical environments. The degree to which this training is applied must be varied to conform to known enemy doctrine, tactics, and actions. This FM also discusses basic and advanced techniques to include acclimatization, illness and injury, equipment, anchors, evacuation, movement on glaciers, and training.Rappelling: Provides basic rappelling techniques to soldiers and leaders for the conduct of rappelling operations. It serves as the primary reference for both resident and nonresident instruction presented to cadets, officer candidates, and both commissioned and noncommissioned officers. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book slight issues
Just to save everyone a few issues, the book is exactly as described and is a very good read for those interested in survival. The only problem with the book is that it references several appendixes that just don't exist. Also, the table of contents lists up to page 123, but there are 230ish pages in the book. Also, all of the page numbers in the TOC do not correspond to the correct page numbers of the chapters. Other than that, I would personally recommend. The shipping was lightning fast and the book was in perfect order. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Books That Changed History {4 1/2 stars}
This massive multi-volume study of US government policy on Vietnam has permanent value not just for scholars and students of the Vietnam War, but for anyone concerned with the making of American foreign policy. The "Papers" are fundamentally important not only in terms of content, of course, but even more so in contrast to the public statements of our leaders explaining the purpose and progress of the war. While this makes the (self-)deception and lies clear enough, it is the internal dialogue of bureaucratic thinking that is most fascinating.

The format of "The Pentagon Papers" is a bit confusing, with primary documents mixed into the main narrative, but not always in a distinguishable manner. The sheer bulk of the material will naturally deter many readers, but it does repay the effort and is superior to various abridgements. While the expurgated editions are useful, the nature of the selection process gives them an episodic quality, and tends to highlight dramatic incidents rather than the all-important mundane character of bureaucracy, even on life and death matters of global import.

Daniel Ellsberg, who released the papers to the press, may well have some unheroic qualities about him. But his greatness lay in transcending the constraints of background and institutional context, and recognizing a higher duty to his country and humanity. Not only the substance of "The Pentagon Papers" ensures their significance, but also Ellsberg's example of public service. This is vitally important in a time when yet another presidential administration deceives us all in pursuit of fatally flawed military adventures. Who will be the Daniel Ellsberg of the so-called "war on terror?"

Some of the issues raised by "The Pentagon Papers" and Ellsberg's career are addressed in N. Chomsky, "American Power and the New Mandarins" (especially the essays on intellectuals' responsibility); D. Ellsberg, "Secrets;" and from a rather different stance, J. Kwitny, "Endless Enemies."The fifth volume of the "Papers" contains invaluable critical essays by notable scholars such as Chomsky and Howard Zinn. For "balance," also look at Robert McNamara's mature reflections on Vietnam,"In Retrospect." But he still seems to be partly in denial. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars not Sure

A Published Date of this Book would have been nice to know about , and in my opinion would have been nice to see on the Book Advertisement on Amazons Website . Not that in this case would have made any difference as to whether I would have purchased this Book , or not , but for the other Book that I ordered from this Company it does.

4-0 out of 5 stars a place to start
this book is by the military, so you can assume that it's about ten years behind the date on the cover.that means that all the info was developed in the mid 50's.it's a good place to start if you don't intend to splice or maintain kernmantle or use any modern equipment like a griphoist or tirfor.i got my copy for about four dollars out in the real world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best on Rigging
This book is very concise, informational, and simply excellent. The best book on rigging. ... Read more
