5-0 out of 5 stars The best digital imaging book money can buy!
Digital Imaging for Libraries and Archives which appeared in 1996quickly became a bible for all of us embarking on or carrying outdigitization projects in the late 90s, and Moving Theory intoPractice looks set to outshine the excellence of the former volume. This work is an honest, clear, well-written and realistic appraisal ofall aspects of the digitization process--the cons as well as the pros.It is informed, hardheaded, and has assembled a most impressivearray of contributors -- many of the leading players in the digitallibrary field, in fact. Some of the aspects which are particularlyvaluable are the treatments of legal and strategic issues, and theemphasis on the move from projects to programmes and services.Welcome, too, is the discussion of other forms of surrogates, andthe cost/benefit analyses of different methods.I cannot praise this volume too highly -- it is certain tobecome the key resource for anyone planning digitization anddigital library projects in this decade, from senior managers tojunior librarians. There is much here for everyone!

4-0 out of 5 stars Moving Theory into Practice
What makes this book so good? Beyond its many virtues-well-researched, well-written, well-presented, relevant - is a simpleprinciple: present the best technical knowledge currently around, but knowthat technical knowledge is not enough. It challenges us all to thinkcritically about what we want and how to get it. This book says thatdigitisation is all about decisions. By laying before us a wealth ofapproaches, insight, and wisdom, it stimulates us to recognise thedecisions we have to make, while helping us to think them through. -Colin Webb, Director, Preservation Services Branch, National Library of Australia ... Product Description

Collecting important original essays by librarians and archivists – all of whom are actively engaged in building digital collections – Digital Scholarship details both challenges and proven solutions in establishing, maintaining, and servicing digital scholarship in the humanities. This volume further explores the ways in which the humanities have benefited from the ability to digitize text and page images of historic documents, mine large corpuses of texts and other forms of records, and assemble widely dispersed cultural objects into common repositories for comparison and analysis--making new research questions and methods possible for the first time.

The ten notable scholars included in Digital Scholarship offer a balanced view of the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches to digitization, reporting both progress and problems, examining new business models, new forms of partnerships, and the new technologies and resources that make many more library and archival services available. Librarians and library staff everywhere will find Digital Scholarship an essential text for the modern library and an illuminating resource for anyone looking to understand the changing face of research in the electronic age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the non-technie
This is a classic digital library creation guide. It assumes you know Web database vocabulary. If you do you'll find it useful even if it is almost a decade old. Some standards persist.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful if you like bulleted lists
I was gravely disappointed by this book.It sounded like just the thing
for a project I'm working on, but in both content and style it was sorely lacking.

The book attempts to whip through a massive amount of information--the
nature and history of archives and the jobs of archivists vs. those of
librarians; finding aids, MARC, EAD, Dublin Core, and some metadata
standards I've never even heard of; HTML, XHTML, and XML; the
organization of information both as a grand overwhelming topic and as
directly applied to digital files--well, you get the idea.A whole
section of the book is devoted to how to arrange folders and files on
a computer to make them usable by other people, which I guess would be
important if you were interested in setting up a shared filing system
on a local area network but which seemed not germane to my topic.
Also, Steilow says that it's not really necessary to learn HTML
because you can just write documents in Word and then save them as
HTML and they'll work just fine.Everything I have ever heard or
experiences suggests to the that doing so is a terrible idea--you end
up with ugly markup that's not standards-compliant.

Finally, on the subject of style, the book is, to my mind, written in
a hard-to-follow style. It's all arranged in bullet points and
sidebars and other little weird boxes of text and diagrams.I guess
for some people it's easier to learn that way, but I find it very hard
to follow--I never know what order I'm supposed to read things in, and
because the material is not presented as a narrative, I'm not sure how
one element is supposed to relate to another.I think that clauses
and verb tenses and prepositional phrases and conjunctions and
transitions exist for a reason--they make it possible for us to relay
ideas and how they relate to one another.I'm aware that not everyone
processes information in the way I do, though, and so there are
perhaps some people who would find this book helpful. ... Read more

Product Description
If the vision for the future of digital information is order, ease of access, discoverable resources and sustainable business models, how might this be achieved? What might go wrong to bring about a state of anarchy? In an information environment shaped by an ever growing and persistent demand for more and more digital content from every direction, it has become increasingly important that publishers, libraries and information professionals understand the challenges and opportunities of the Google environment. This book addresses these issues and carves out a strategy for the future of digital information. Put together by an international, cross-sectoral team of contributors, each authored chapter provides a snapshot of where we are now and considers how the barriers might be overcome and what the digital information environment might look like if they are - or indeed are not - addressed. The key sections include: resource discovery; e-books; scholarly communications; digitizing the past; who owns the content in the digital environment; e-learning; a publisher's view; and, the vision for the future. This book is essential reading for all library and information professionals as well as for researchers and library students. It will also be of interest to publishers wishing to reconcile their own digital strategies with those of both information consumers and providers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I liked this book for the following reasons: great introduction to the variety of digital receivers, the diagrams and figures are very good and aid in understanding the subject, just enough mathematical equations to learn the information and not fall asleep, and best of all, the Matlab programs are very useful.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in communications. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Paul fans!
This book is one of the "core" scholarly works in the literature of Paul.It is written by a conservative Christian scholar F.F. Bruce.I wanted to read more of Bruce's work after working through his commentary on the Book of Acts (there are two).Although I've read a number of books on Paul across the spectrum from liberal to conservative, "Paul, apostle of the free spirit" is refreshing because it provides a lot of detail and accepts Paul and the events of his life a genuine experiences and the Bible as a reliable historical and theological work. For example, Bruce accepts that Christ did witness to Paul on the road to Damascus, Paul's conversion experience. The book might be a bid dry for the average reader since it is a bit on the scholarly / technical side, but I strongly recommend it even as a reference book. ... Product Description
The Text REtrieval Conference (TREC), a yearly workshop hosted by the US government's National Institute of Standards and Technology, provides the infrastructure necessary for large-scale evaluation of text retrieval methodologies. With the goal of accelerating research in this area, TREC created the first large test collections of full-text documents and standardized retrieval evaluation. The impact has been significant; since TREC's beginning in 1992, retrieval effectiveness has approximately doubled. TREC has built a variety of large test collections, including collections for such specialized retrieval tasks as cross-language retrieval and retrieval of speech. Moreover, TREC has accelerated the transfer of research ideas into commercial systems, as demonstrated in the number of retrieval techniques developed in TREC that are now used in Web search engines.

This book provides a comprehensive review of TREC research, summarizing the variety of TREC results, documenting the best practices in experimental information retrieval, and suggesting areas for further research. The first part of the book describes TREC's history, test collections, and retrieval methodology. Next, the book provides "track" reports—describing the evaluations of specific tasks, including routing and filtering, interactive retrieval, and retrieving noisy text. The final part of the book offers perspectives on TREC from such participants as Microsoft Research, University of Massachusetts, Cornell University, University of Waterloo, City University of New York, and IBM. The book will be of interest to researchers in information retrieval and related technologies, including natural language processing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Jewish History
When I was in College this was one of the text books that was used to teach Jewish history.Recently I used the book to teach a class myself on the history of Israel. Some good things about this book is that it has short chapters and told in a simple and concise manner by a great theologian of the New Testament, the late F. F. Bruce. This book covers all of the before Jesus period of the Jews on up to the Bar Kochba rebellion that ended in 135 AD.

Some of the main features are the detail of the Maccabean revolt and the Jewish revolt that culminates in the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD.This book is not exhaustive, but if you are looking for a good place to start, this would be it. ... Read more
