I got this book for a college course on divorce and find it to be an easy and interesting read that clearly and concisely explains information that might otherwise be cloudy and confusing to anyone without a law degree. It also gives good advice to anyone who is contemplating or is in the early stages of getting a divorce.

Product Description

The average divorce takes two years with a median cost of $30,000. Yet the true cost of divorce is more than time or money; it is the legacy of the decisions made during the process. No matter how long two people have been married, whether there are children or not, divorce often leads to bad choices that can forever alter a family’s life. But what if you could reverse the stereotype and move regret-free through this process? Divorce is unfortunate but it does not need to become the defining moment for the rest of your life.

Michele Lowrance is a practicing domestic-relations judge who over the past four years has seen 100 percent of divorcing couples avoid trial by following the principles presented in this book. Using her expertise as a family-court judge and former divorce attorney, Judge Lowrance has created a revolutionary guide for people facing the turmoil of divorce. The Good Karma Divorce offers concrete advice, real-life examples, no-nonsense tools, and helpful checklists. Inside, you will learn how to:

  • Create a manifesto: Judge Lowrance shows us how to craft a road map that serves as our moral compass through the ever-twisting divorce journey.
  • Harness negative emotions: Divorce brings out some of the strongest emotions we will feel in our lifetimes. Judge Lowrance helps us transform these raw feelings into positive power. We don’t have to be victims.
  • Prevent collateral damage: Divorce is so personal that it is easy to lose focus on the big picture. Judge Lowrance’s impassioned advice will help guide you through the minefield, delivering a clear course of action to protect what we all value most: our children.
  • Master transformative confrontation: It might start ugly but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Judge Lowrance teaches us how to avoid carnage in the courtroom, reinvigorate stale negotiations, and create a civility agreement.

Divorce is transitory, yet we too often become paralyzed by its effects. Life goes on and the decisions we make during this process must endure as well. By following our personal manifesto, harnessing our raw emotions, preventing collateral damage, and using transformative confrontation, we can avoid the black hole of litigation and create a good karma divorce, opening up a new world of hope and possibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Surprise!
I was asked to read this book as part of a project at work. I hid it inside the dust cover of another book so that my children wouldn't see the title. Despite my hesitation to let people know what I was reading, I have to say that this book is fantastic! It's probably the best self-help book I've ever read, and it's among the best books of any kind I've ever read. Not only does the author understand divorce from every angle, she also has genuine compassion for everybody involved with or affected by the process. In addition, the writing is great. Sometimes it's spectacular. Near the conclusion, for instance, she's talking about the importance of remembering the good times in your previous marriage as you move forward in your life. She writes, "If you believe that in order to move through the door ahead, the door behind you must be sealed, you may be entering the gates of prison." That sentence creates a powerful image in my mind.

The book makes the claim on the dust jacket that 100% of couples following these principles avoid trial. That's a bold claim, but I'll bet it's true. Nobody with an ounce of compassion could study the principles in this book and also read its description of the court process, and then drag a person who they had ever even slightly cared for through such a nightmare. Describing court she writes, "The same hands that caressed you, that supported you when you were ill, are now vehemently shoving documents at an attorney in an attempt to administer pain instead of aid." I gained a far better understanding of concepts like anger, criticism, forgiveness, and apology from this book. I also learned the great concept of heroic parenting.

The author never claims that the principles she teaches have saved any marriages, but I'll guarantee they have. She never suggests that a couples decision to divorce might not be the right choice, but I'm certain many readers have rethought that decision in the process of reading her wonderful book. I have a hard time believing that there's an adult anywhere who wouldn't benefit from reading this information. Before I turned the book back in to my employer I ordered my own copy from Amazon. My wife has already begun reading it, and I'm looking forward to reading it again, this time with a highlighter in my hand from start to finish. My life is better for having read this book. Thank you, Judge!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading - Divorce 101
Best read before, during and after the divorce process. Common sense approach supported by practical reasoning, with a touch of psychology added in.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any general lending library
THE GOOD KARMA DIVORCE: AVOID LITIGATION, TURN NEGATIVE EMOTIONS INTO POSITIVE ACTIONS, AND GET ON WITH THE REST OF YOUR LIFE is based on the author's decade of experience as a family court judge and former divorce attorney and provides a fine survey of how to create a moral game plan to harness negative emotions and present collateral damage during divorce. From understanding constructive confrontation to understanding common destructive paths and their alternatives, this is a 'must' for any general lending library.

5-0 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC NOT ONLY FOR DIVORCE BUT OTHER INTERPERSONAL CONFLICTS AS WELL!
Even having never been divorced and currently very happily married I found the book to be of enormous help to me with other kinds of interpersonal challenges, too. The principles transfer very nicely to conflicts with friends, loved ones, colleagues and supervisors alike. Judge Lowrance has an engaging writing style that makes the concepts built from her years of experience leap off of the page and straight into practice. I found that it hit the nail on the head over and over.I recommended it to a friend who has been divorced for over 10 years who found it immensely helpful in healing long neglected and damaging emotions that had been dragging her down for a decade.
Absolutely the best help self-help book I have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering Book for All Relationships
As a friend of the author, I initially embarked on reading The Good Karma Divorce out of obligation and curiosity. I have been divorced over 20 years and assumed this book would not be applicable to my life.I was so wrong.I found the book filled with relevant information with valuable and constructive ways to enhance my life and the lives of others.
Knowing Michell, I had the added bonus of hearing her voice speaking to me as I read. She is a brilliant author making this painful subject fascinating to read with her colorful literary descriptions. Each chapter begins with a pertinent quote with other thoughtful quotes to follow. This displays her voracious reading and shows her comprehension and compassion of the human experience.
The chapter on apology moved me so much that it brought me to cal my ex who I have had no contact with, and apologize for my past behavior. It was a traumatic endeavor which resulted in an overpowering release of "Bad Karma".
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their relationships with others and learn concrete exercises in dealing with adversity, particularly divorce. My biggest regret is that this book wasn't available when I went through divorce. ... Read more

All the dueling reviews below would have you wonder about the quality of both "Divorce and Money" books, so as an experiment I got both. It's pretty clear that this book (Nolo's) is the better one, hands down. The difference was evident in just minutes. Everything's presented in easy to read verbiage, the charts are easy to use, and the forms and checklists were really handy. Helped me and my ex make the split easier than I expected, frankly. Okay I might be exagerating but I did love this book. A friend recommended it after my husband and I decide to "part ways." I accidently picked up the other book with the same title and was not so thrilled with all the Get A Attorney advice, but then I realized my mistake and got this version -- it's SO helpful. It almost took me by the hand and showed me how to be less emotional than I would be when making decisions affecting how to split our property and bills up, and how to figure out child support. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better
As a clinician, I purchased this book to use with young clients adjusting to
their parents recent decision to divorce. I tried to use this book with children
11 years old and children around 7 years old. The text didn't fit either age group's needs well.
The book is adequate for introducing the idea of divorce. However, the information is a bit simplistic
for an older child whose parents have already divorced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I bought this book for my son who is 9. He didn't understand why we divorced or anything about it. He loves this book. He said it made him feel so much better. I think it is great how it has other children's views written throughout the book. My son felt he was feeling the same way as the other kids, and he knew it was ok.

Great book for anyone with a curious child who doesn't understand.

I use this book as a tool for providing small group counseling for elementary students. It helps kids understand that they did not cause the divorce so they can't fix it. It helps begin discussions about feelings and concerns they may have about two houses, two families, two sets of rules and other changes that happen as a result of a divorce. ... Read more

    Product Description
Why does divorce cause so much strain and long-term distress for children of all ages? Andrew Root, a recognized authority on youth ministry and a child of divorce himself, explains that divorce causes children to question their core identity. Since a child is the product of the union of a mother and father, when that union ends, he or she experiences a baffling sense of loss of self--a loss of his or her very sense of being. Root redirects efforts for assisting children of divorce to first address this fundamental experience. This unique book examines the impact of divorce not only from a theological and spiritual perspective but also from a young person's perspective. It will benefit those who have experienced divorce and those who minister to children of divorce. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great insight into divorce
I was looking for a book that provided insight into divorce. Though I am not through yet, this book provides insight into how kids respond and react psychologically and socially to divorce. I would recommend this book for Youth workers, pastors, and all people who work with children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Divorce as Ontological Anxiety
As I write this review, I cannot help but draw connections between my own story and Andrew Root's newest book, "The Children of Divorce."

Root's premise is that divorce is not only a sociological or psychological upheaval, but that at its roots has ontological implications. Divorce affects our very sense of being in the world. Root writes:

"It is my belief that our humanity (and very being) is upheld in community. For each of us, the most significant and core of these communities is the one made up of a biological mother and father. Without their community, there would be no child. So when that community is destroyed, it is a threat to the child's being. Divorce, therefore, should be seen as not just the split of a social unity, but the break of the community in which the child's identity rests. Divorce is much more than a psychological or sociological reality. It is about something deeper than economic advantage, psychological stability, or social capital. Divorce is a threat to a child's very ontology, to his or her very being."

Root offers a history of the family as a social unit, revealing that our current societal norms creates a culture ripe for divorce. In the past, marriage was based around kin, location, and economic motives; in our present day, marriage's foundation is generally around an emotional choice between two lovers, a choice that can just as easily be unchosen. Living in this risky world, children must live with the reality that their family--and thus their very sense of being--could be uprooted at any moment. Root reveals the ontological effects of divorce with a comprehensive look at the sense of self through the multifaceted lens of philosophy (Martin Heidegger), social theory (Anthony Giddens), and theology (Karl Barth). If we find our being through community and relationship, and if the central relationship of family is shattered, then our very being becomes fractured. Root puts it this way:

"In constant interaction with this community of mother and father, the child discovers himself and his world. When this world collapses, the unreal floods his being, for even though he may be old enough to have other objects and communities in his life, he has lost the one that has been from the beginning the one that made him real, the one that is bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh. When this is taken away, the young person is lost."

The practical implications of this reality are enormous. We cannot approach children of divorce by only giving them information or offering temporary sympathy for their emotions; we must recognize that a central foundation of their being has been torn away. They are not just emotionally hurting, much like the temporary pain of an insult or a lousy day; they are hurting from the depths of their soul, which has lifelong effects. Root shares numerous stories throughout the book, from young children to adults, all sharing the same ontological anxiety.

Root manages to take a very academic approach to a complex subject and still affect one's heart. As I read Root's introductory own story of how both his and his wife's parents made decisions to separate, the wave of emotions hit me. His story is near-parallel to mine, with my own parents recently separated and a growing sense of ontological urgency welling up in my heart. It was a deeply healing book to read. Root's personal reflection gave a voice to the emotions struggling within my own soul:

"I felt numb, cut loose, unbound. My family had never been perfect, but it had been my family. Now that it was falling apart, it seemed as if I had nowhere to stand. It was like the scene late in the movie Back to the Future, where Marty begins to become transparent as it looks like he will fail to bring his teenaged parents together. It seemed as if I were fading into nothingness."

If one's being and sense of self can be shaken as an adult, how much more do our young people in the homes of divorce deal with ontological anxiety? Names and faces from youth groups past and present came to mind as I reflected upon the book. They are in need of a solid community where their sense of being can safely rub shoulders with others struggling to form their own identities. There is hope--the church can be a new family, a place where children of divorce can find belonging and regain a sense of being in the world. The Children of Divorce is a philosophically- and theologically-rich resource for those seeking to understand and love children of divorce in the name of Jesus.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Journey of Understanding
This excellent new book deserves a place in your library, especially if you're a counselor or social worker seeking to help others. Authentic, true-to-life and packed with anecdotal examples, this is a powerful and immediately useful book.

Earlier studies (see Judith Wallerstein's 'What About the Kids?' here on Amazon) have explored this territory, yet there is still so much we need to learn! Especially in recent history, there was a tendency to minimize the impact of divorce on children --- and on the generations yet to come.

Fractured families have social consequences, economic consequences, and ultimately personal and individual consequences. Author Andrew Root explores these issues honestly and directly. Cheers for doing so.

Accessible for the general reader, but very helpful for anyone in a counseling role.

5-0 out of 5 stars More optimistic than other books - good for parents not at war with each other
We have a 5 yr old son and were looking for a book to help us through a difficult and emotional divorce (aren't they all?), something suitable for his age, but also one that doesn't talk about parents hating each other or arguing all the time, etc. We are trying very hard to stay friendly and continue to support him as a team. I can tell he's relieved in many ways because now there isn't a lot of arguing and bad energy around him, so in some ways the change is for the better. We wanted to support the positive change, along with the challenging. This book is a very helpful addition to our processing of emotions and trying to figure out ways to explain things and to talk about them - both child to parent/s and parent/s to child. Now we have a copy in each house. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great for preschoolers...better for ages 7 to 10
I bought this book because of the recommendations, but I find it far to wordy and deep for my preschoolers. On every spread, the left page is entirely text (multiple paragraphs), and the right page is an illustration.I think this book is probably better suited to 7-10 year-olds than to preschoolers. For 3-5 year-olds, instead of this book, I recommend "Standing on my own two feet" by Schmitz and "Two Homes" by Masurel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vicki Lansky has nailed it.

    This is where Vicki starts:
    Children need to know
    Children should never be asked
Children think in simple and magical ways
Children need to hear age-appropriate reasons

This book as with her other books give solid advice with an open heart. Once you have read this book to a child, you will be reading it again and again. My experience is that by the third reading, you child can explain the page to you. So much comfort for your child. Buy it and read it with your child. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book made a big difference
My three-year-old loves this book! She was 2 1/2 when I separated with my husband, and she could not understand what was happening. She didn't ask a lot of questions or want to talk about it much for a long time, until we started reading this book. It's very bittersweet, and made me cry numerous times. Yet she wanted to read it all the time! It gave us a starting point, and some of the references in the book I use all the time now. [Mommy and Daddy are like two puzzle pieces that just don't fit anymore.] There's so much kids can't understand, but kids have a strong need to understand what's going on in their lives. This book explains it in a way that I couldn't have possibly explained it. Having a bear as the main character who is going through the same things, helps her to "de-personalize" the experience, take it off of our family and put it on the bear family. If she can understand what the bear family is going through, then she has a better idea of what our family is going through. I'm not a child psychologist and I don't know how to explain divorce to a three-year-old, but this book is ideal for helping kids to understand (in my experience!). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a good read
This book is pretty good. My situation is different in that I'm not getting a divorce, only going through a custody case. However, it does have a lot of helpful and useful information regarding those issues.
If you are getting a divorce and are a women, I would highly recommend this book be read.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. T.B.
This is a very good book for any woman going through a divorce whether you've started the process or just thinking about it, i think this is a MUST HAVE!!! This book gave me plenty of insights as to situations that i had little or no knowledge about whatsoever, please get.

    5-0 out of 5 stars should be 6 stars....tremendous for a man's perspective.

What Every Woman Should Know About Divorce and Custody is a necessary resource for women and men in the process of going through a divorce, as well as for those trying to decide whether or not to divorce, and even after divorce, when custody and child support issues still rear their ugly heads. It isclear, concise, and comforting. This book is a real eye-opener to those thinking about or just starting the process, and provides important information and tactics to all readers about this brutal process. Many lawyers treat the divorce process like a chess game and this book gives you an insider's view of the system. This book arms you with the information to wage the battle. The book is newly updated. It gives good tips on e-mail, virtual visitation, spyware, and other twenty-first century issues that I hadn't even considered. I had read the author's book Divorce and Money and I found this book on custody to be a great help with all of the custody issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
I am both a social worker and a divorced mother and I can tell you this book is terrific. While the book's title says it is for divorced mothers, fathers and therapists would find it helpful as well. I noticed that it is updated with the latest information, including an intriguing chapter on technology and visitation. The issues it addresses are modern as is the advice from professionals and parents. I plan to recommend it to colleagues and clients.

3-0 out of 5 stars moving forward if you have been married with children
This book is a very easy to read book. It is cut into bite-size reading parts and and leaves you walking away thinking about what you just read. I, however, am on the younger end of a divorce and do not have children; so I found the book to be slightly misleading because an overwhelming part of the book is about parenting and raising children. If I had children, I'd probably give this a higher rating, however it didn't offer what I needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book in This Category: By Far
Besides reading this book myself, I've given it as a gift to several friends. It's so warm, so readable, and so full of hope.

This is the best divorce-care or divorce-recovery title that I've read anywhere! I liked the true-life stories; I could relate to the women and men in these pages as they made mistakes, learned by trial and error, and then began to move forward.

There is a lot of realism here --- Not false hope or fuzzy optimism. The book pulls no punches, but the more you read, somehow the more encouraged you become. And by the end of the book you realize --- divorce doesn't have to limit me in the future or determine my personal identity.

Instead, I can grow, change, improve, move forward --- and succeed!!

I also enjoyed reading a related title:Happily Remarried: Making Decisions Together * Blending Families Successfully * Building a Love That Will Last

2-0 out of 5 stars Fair to midland
I had high hopes for this book, obviously anyone searching under this topic is looking for a lifeline and this book is not it. I estimate 20% to 30% of the book is useful & it does a great job of talking about the benefits of faith without basing everything from that platform. It may help with recovery but it tries to cover all situations from day 1 to remarriage & doesn't focus enough on day 1 to day 365.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Me
I didn't feel this book did anything to help me with my feelings.Maybe for someone else.Typical self-help book.Nothing out of the ordinary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Divorce Book Out There for Parents!
When I found myself suddenly [and unexpectedly] a single mom with six children, panic set in.Seriously.

I ordered quite a lot of divorce books in an effort to learn what I needed to do to survive in this strange new world I'd woken up in.

This book was by far the most helpful one. The authors shared stories of other divorced people that I could relate to.They helped me understand what was normal [and that feeling like I felt WAS, indeed, normal]. They gave very concrete and helpful advice on how to "Move Forward" - it was so positive and it really helped me pick myself up and get moving towards healing and a brand new life.

I credit this book with helping me move beyond despair and broken-heartedness and towards happiness and hope.

The constructive ideas in this book not only helped me help myself, but really helped me help my children as well - they benefitted from this book at least as much as I did.Quite a lot of this book is devoted to helping divorced people who are also parents, and I found that extremely beneficial.

For someone going through a divorce who does not have children, this book may not be as helpful - quite a bit of it really is focused on parenting well through divorce. This book is also written from a strong Christian perspective and may not be helpful to those who are not from a Christian belief system.

But for newly single Christian parents - you can't find a better book. Buy this book - you won't be sorry. In fact, I'd really like to thank the authors - you changed my life for the better with this truly helpful book. You helped me survive the worst time in my life and to move forward and thrive. Thank you so much. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and practical book.
This book was written to disseminate information derived from three decades of behavioral research into the effects of divorce on children. It has a format of short chapters that make it easy to read and apply as needed. The book is inexpensive, useful, and accurate.I am a clinical psychologist, and in my practice, I recommend this book to all my patients who are parents struggling with divorce.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Divorce easier on your child
Not that you can make divorce easier for a child. This book may help. But parents be realistic it is rarely easier. Care about your children by treating their parent with respect. This book can help with that.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful for parents
As a professional counselor, I was interested in specific ideas on helping parents & children of divorce. This book had some very concrete ideas. It is aimed at parents, written in 'plain-speak'.There's nothing new or eath-shaking here, but it is a pretty all-inclusive little book for parents interested in helping their children deal with the issue of divorce.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview
It's a good overview, but I needed more situational type information. How to work through the tough disagreements with a spouse who is unwilling to meet on common ground. How to deal with younger children and how it impacts them.I did take away some good advice, but most of the book is common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that helped me get through this year
2009 has been rough for me. This book has helped me get through as I experienced the end of my ten year marriage. While I know there are support groups for men, I have preferred to go through this alone and have chosen to go inward instead. But books like this one have helped the healing. What I appreciate the most was that this author shares his own story--right from the painful beginning to adapting to reaching a peaceful and optimistic ending. Knowing someone else has gotten to the other side of this has brought me a great deal of relief.

The advice the author gives about working out custody and dating was sound and wise advice I took to heart. I was torn apart by what to do when it came to custody, but the advice the author gave about staying reasonable and handling the situation as calmly and peacefully as possible was just amazing.

Another book I would recommend is Dating After Divorce - How to Meet New Women, Start a Sexual Relationship, and Have Fun Again....

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh perspective, a must read, with a great ending.
A fresh perspective, a must read, with a great ending. In "A Man's Feelings," Eads takes you through key turning points of his life, stressing the crucial importance of closure and sharing on how he dealt with loneliness and the stigma that goes with divorce. He shows how one can overcome such tragedy, coming out of it, a new person--much wiser and better off.

So what does a person do after divorce? What about dating and finding true love? This book comes from the heart, is enlightening and brings entertainment that touches the soul.

Written from his experiences, with vividness and emotion, "A Man's Feelings" is certainly a rare gem, proving, without a doubt, good things happen to those who persevere.

Regardless of whether you or someone you know are going through a divorce, I highly recommend reading "A Man's Feelings."

5-0 out of 5 stars An Man's Feelings...It's more than that.
To date, I have read Michael Eads book twice and have found new and different points of resonance each time. Society, our courts and general consensus grant little credit to most men's deep conviction of the sanctity of marriage and the likely trauma of divorce.Michael's book nails the emotional hurricane people experience and subsequently stands as a guide and proclamation of hope toward a calmer, fulfilling future. This book may be one man's experience, yet simultaneously it represents the journey of millions, in less than 200 pages. Mike, my sincere appreciation to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars No pitty pot.(LOL)
Michael's book is a message of hope and optimism for anyone willing to be honest and willing to let go of old behavior patterns.Michael makes you laugh but he also holds you (and himself accountable) in a way that elevates, and makes a person willing to do the hard work of introspection and change.

Thanks Michael for a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading in junior high & high school
I have read A Man's Feelings:Finding Closure After Divorce(AMF:FCAD). Though Author Michael Eads may not have intended it, it can also serve as a sober lesson to all sexually active, or potentially sexually active, teenagers, who believe that making out has no drag factor, so long as there is no pregnancy nor sexually transmitted disease.

If you are a teenager who believes "just wear a condom" is guaranteed to prevent problems, read AMF:FCAD. And you don't have to be a guy to benefit from what AMF:FCAD has to say.Don't wait until your school or parents require you to read it. Nor wait until your hormones make you to make out. AMF:FCAD is not preachy, fun to read, and can easily be read in one sitting. These three reasons alone cause me to believe that it ought become a New York Times best seller. ... Read more

    Product Description
Many children are referred for counseling to help them adjust to divorce. They typically feel vulnerable and overwhelmed by conflicting emotions. They may feel anxious about the therapeutic process and be reluctant to talk directly about the divorce. Activities that are creative and play based can engage children and help them to safely express their thoughts and feelings. This book provides practitioners with creative interventions to engage, assess, and treat children of divorce. A range of innovative activities are presented, including therapeutic games, art, puppets, and stories. The first section of this book, which contains guidelines for practitioners, lays the foundation for effective counseling with children of divorce. Section Two presents a theoretical overview on children of divorce and incorporates some of the latest literature on the topic. The third section provides material for use with the child s parents. It includes a letter to give parents in the first session, informing them about the therapeutic process, and a social history questionnaire to be used as part of the clinical assessment. A handout for parents is also included, to help them better understand and respond to their child. Sections five through seven provide creative activities to help children express feelings, deal with loyalty binds, disengage from parental conflict, address anger and self-blame, and learn coping. In addition to activities for use in individual and family sessions, there is also a ten week curriculum for use in children s support groups. The Appendix includes a Custody and Access Dispute Contract, a treatment plan, and a sample letter for the practitioner to give to the child upon termination from therapy. This book is an innovative resource for practitioners seeking engaging tools to help children cope with separation and divorce. ... Read more

This book is a "must-have" for any counselors working with children or parents in divorce situations. It is very practical, effective, well-structured, and most of all, fun.It really helps children open up about their feelings and provides opportunities to address so many "unanswered questions" that kids often have about divorce.I love the family activities, as well.I highly recommend all of Ms. Lowenstein's books, including:

Creative Interventions for Troubled children and youth
More Creative Interventions for Troubled Children and Youth
    Creative Interventions for Bereaved Children
Paper Dolls and Paper Airplanes (for use with child victims of sexual abuse)
    and (edited by Ms. Lowenstein):

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Resource for Working with Children Adjusting to Parental Divorce
Creative Interventions for Children of Divorce is an invaluable resource for clinicians helping children adjust to parental divorce.Liana Lowenstein has provided therapeutic techniques that are playful and interesting for children and easy for clinicians to prepare and utilize. This book provides ideas for counselors, social workers, and psychologists providing group, family, or individual therapy with this population. From the Coping with Divorce Game to the Letters to Mom and Dad, the ready-to-use interventions included in this collection, touch on common problems issues of parental divorce.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Interventions for Children of Divorce
This is the first book I have seen that contains truly creative and engaging therapeutic activities to use with children dealing with divorce. The activities can be used with children in many settings. There is a curriculum that can be used in therapy or support groups, and a chapter of activities to use in family therapy. In addition, there is a handout for parents to provide them with tips on how to support their children through the separation/divorce process. The theoretical overview covers important topics such as the impact of divorce on children at different ages and stages, and how to work with cases involving Parental Alienation. This book is among the best I have seen on this topic, and it will be an invaluable resource for therapists, counselors, support group facilitators, etc. Other books on this topic I recommend:

    Author of Connected Parenting

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great resource for practitioners!
I have been using Ms. Lowenstein's books for many years in my work with children and adolescents. These books are always within in reach when I work with children as I feel they are quite instrumental in my work. What I like about them is that they focused on issues--divorce, grief, loss, bereavement, troubled youth-- that most books don't discuss as clearly. In my work with various populations I found Ms. Lowenstein's activities to be readily adaptable to every situation.

The activities are creative and allow the child or adolescent to focus on what activity they are completing while not realizing that they are doing a therapeutic activity. It is a great addition to talk therapy aiding a youth who has difficulty verbalizing their feelings.Children often lose their voice when they experience difficult situations and these activities aid in restoring it for them. The activities are easy to implement and don't require a great deal of prep time. However, the clinician should be prepared prior to implementing each activity.

Every social worker, clinically trained counselor, psychologist and play therapist should have her books as a part of their therapeutic library. I feel they are the most practical resource for professionals who are working with children with the issues that these books address--bereavement, divorce and trauma.

Make sure your shelves include: Creative Interventions for Bereaved Children, CI for Children of Divorce, CI for Troubled Youth and the other books written by Ms. Lowenstein.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible practical & creative resource when working with children and divorce
This is the most creative, practical resource for professionals on the topic of children and divorce. It is packed with creative assessment and treatment techniques to use with children dealing with divorce. I have used the activities with clients in individual sessions as well as with the children in a support group. There is a theoretical overview that contains some very useful information. The author grants permission to copy the activities for use with clients. There is also a "Tips Sheet" that you can copy to give to parents. This book should be on the bookshelf of any helping professional working with this population.

I highly recommend Liana Lowenstein's other books that I have listed below:

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice for kids going through a family breakup
I wanted a book that would quell my 5 year old's fear of what was going on in my house. She was asking a lot of questions & needed guidance dealing with my breakup with her other parent. This book did a great job explaining it all on her level & my daughter picks it up and reads it anytime she feels nervous or scared about the divorce.I went to Barnes & Noble first to read through the entire book to make sure it was what I wanted before I purchased it & it was everything I wanted it to be. I highly recommend this to any Mother going through a divorce with young, curious kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 YEAR OLD LOVES IT!
I thought this was a good book.We have a four year old and he "got" it.
The way it is written, the children are shown that they are "special" and most importantly BOTH PARENTS LOVE THEM VERY MUCH!

This book is perfect for 3-5 year olds and doesn't intimate about blame for the situation. It just speaks of what they can expect.LOVE !

He still asks me to read the book to him.I think it reminds him that he can be secure.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is very slanted towards "Daddy leaving"
I bought this book for my stepchildren when they were about 2 years old.The book comes highly recommended from other users on Amazon, but if you are looking for a book that portrays both parents in an equal light, this is not the book for you.I found this book to be extremely slanted towards portraying an image in which "Daddy leaves." I haven't found it applicable to our situation at all.A better recommendation would be "Two Homes" by Claire Masurel. This book is a favorite of ours and you can expect a fair representation of both parents- emphasis is given to building an environment of love and belonging at two homes. Two Homes

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Excellent Book for toddlers
I bought this book for my two yr old while going through a separation. He says "mom, I sad." I read him this book on the situaiton at hand & it is right to the point & simple for toddlers to understand. Its about a bear family and no matter where daddy is or mama is, they always love you. No matter that there are two houses now, mama & daddy still think about you. AND in no way is this separation the childs fault. Its a MUST read for parents separating with small children. Believe me, they know things are different, they don't know the details, but reading this book will help them understand that everything will be ok among all the chaos in thier lives now. a MUST buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - comforting and realistic
This book provides an excellent way to brooch the subject of divorce with little ones. It is told through the eyes of a little bear, who has a big sister, a Mama and a Daddy. She loves them all and she loves her little rabbit and her red sandles. When she hears about the divorce she is sad, but learns that the people, activities and things she loves are still there, even if they happen in different places now that Daddy has moved out

My children are five, three and zero, and the little bear in this tale seems about three, so it is very appropriate. I am going to make sure I read this story to them lots as Daddy moves out this weekend. Already they seem easier with the idea of separation (even if they don't like it that Daddy's taking the TV!)

This book is very valuable and very comforting to the children. I cannot recommend it too highly ... Read more

Somewhat disappointing. It felt to me like it was leaning toward the choice of divorce more so than making the choice or staying or going.

Good seller.Very quick to send.Book itself had many helpful hints but way too many case studies that didnt really help or cover some situations

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who wants to work on their marriage.
This book is fantastic, and was instrumental in parting the clouds for me during one of the most difficult times of my life - determining whether my marriage was salvagable or not.The exercises in this book are very helpful in assessing the work that needs to be done on a marriage, and in determining whether that work can be done by the two of you or not.I highly recommend this book whether you are contemplating divorce or not - in my case, I was contemplating it, and some of the exercises in this book made it crystal clear to me which path was the right one for me.I can't begin to express how thankful I am to have run across this book, and highly recommend it to anyone facing even the smallest difficulties in their marriage - it can help you see how to approach fixing things if you choose to, or deciding that it is time to end things if you choose to.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING book
This book offers the reader a wealth of information about the difficult, limbo space between an unhappy marriage and making the decision to stay or leave.I especially appreciated Susan's applications of the theories of phases of contemplation and Maslow's hierarchy of needs to help the reader gain clarity about his or her own process. The exercises are helpful and worthwhile to do. This is a very practical volume that gave me much to reflect on.I recommend it highly for both therapists and the general public.

I bought this book shortly after my own divorce; it helped me than and it keeps on helping me! Thank you, Jim Smoke, for such an honest look at the problems and difficulties we face in recovering from this kind of trauma. I have heard that a new edition may be coming out --- if so, that's great, but this edition is still useful to anyone who is divorced. I give this book my highest possible recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Divorce Classic: Now Revised and Updated

This is one of the best divorce-recovery books in print. Originally released in the mid-1990's, the book has sold hundreds of thousands of copies in its original editions --- because the author tracks divorce accurately, and he writes very well.

After more than two decades of learning from divorced adults and post-divorce blended families, Lisa and I highly value the wisdom, insight, and writing ability that Jim Smoke brings to this book. Now revised and updated, the book is even more relevant --- and now it's up-to-date with today's legal climate.

Aloha.I have been using this book for over ten years as a tool in helping people to recover from their brokenness and draw closer to the God.The Lord uses the class, of which I teach using this text "Growing Through Divorce", as a vehicle to draw people to Him.To let them understand how God is more interested in their relationship with Him, then He is about their brokenness. Not that He doesn't care about their despair; through their adversities He brings them closer to Him.Going through the book, praying, reading scriptures and having open and honest communication with the group has helped hundreds of people. They have become stronger in their walk with the Lord Jesus Christ, and a high percentage of them are actively involved in some kind of ministry. Some become leaders within the group and are co-leaders, and attend leadershp classes along with me. The results have been tremendous.People are healthier, happier, stronger-mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually and financially.Yes, people have and continue to "Grow Through Divorce".This book is a "must" for you who are serious about recovering from the devastation of a broken relationship.God Bless You. ... This book had insight on all areas that I have been struggling with. Made me see how important it is to connect with other people who are going through the same things that I am. I was thinking that my situation wasall my own, but no! Others are having the same thoughts and feelings as I am. I am a Christian and staying involved in my church, going to a Christian counselor, trying to stay connected with my spouse, reading my Bible daily, and reading books on divorce have helped immensely. I even read books on the problems my husband has been I hauggling with also. I have been able to have closure only because I feel that I've done absolultely everything I could in my power to save my marrige. Because of this book, I was able to say to God that I give my husband and all his problems to you now. I've done my part. I'm healing more everyday.

A review from [...], the online resource and community for the 850,000 women who divorce each year:

Divorce Care is an exceptionally well-written book designed to get anyone through the very first days of divorce, step-by-step and sometimes minute-by-minute. The entire book is written in short snippets for each crazy topic and designed so you can reference it again and again. This is the book you will pick up when you're having a panic attack at 3 a.m.This is the book you will carry in your purse when you drop off the kids at their dad's house for the first week of visitation.

Divorce Care is written by the Presbyterians who created the phenomenal support group of the same name, but many non-Christians will benefit from the universal spiritual guidance and wisdom. Divorce is not the time to get snobby about your brand of spiritual guidance, especially when it's this good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Divorce and Remarriage in the Church
This book is very insightful with new biblical perspectives relating to Divorce that are sometimes a touchy subject with the Christian Church. With new findings (like the dead sea scrolls), the author pulls in the culture of the times to open up scripture and it's meaning in relation to divorce and remarriage with the original Hebrew and Greek as his text. This book would be good for every pastor and is a must for any Christian thinking about or going through divorce.

4-0 out of 5 stars Balanced View
Nice to see a scholarly review of this issue in layman terms, great book. Answered my questions with substantiation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pastoral and Scholarly Help on a difficult topic
Brewer is able to boil down the problems and solutions from Scripture in a pastoral (he was a Baptist minister for years) and scholarly (he has a Ph.D. in first-century rabinnic Judaism) way as it relates to marriage, divorce, and re-marriage.Must-read for anyone confused by how Jesus and Paul seem to differ in their understanding of divorce and re-marriage.

Divorce after 50 is one of the most challenging transitions that you can face. This well-organized book, written in plain English, is a godsend for those who are searching for critical information when facing divorce. The book touches on many important areas such as emotional aspects, how to choose and prepare to meet with a family lawyer, discussions of marital property and assets and debts, health care, estate planning, you name it.If you are 50+ and want to feel more comfortable and be better informed to make wise decisions regarding your finances and your future, this book is for you. There are even stories about survival after divorce.Yes, there is life after divorce!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I recommend this book for anyone over 50who is thinking aboutor going through a divorce. It gives great tips and ideas and I believe it covers everything.I was concerned about health care coverage but now I know what I will be able to do. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource!!!
this nolo book, divorce after 50, is very well written.it covers all of the most significant, most costly, or most frequent issues that divorcees face.it is an excellent resource and it is strongly recommended for men and women divorcing who are over 50, and, frankly, it is an excellent resource for even younger couples (ok, if i'd've come home with this book, my wife would've divorced me on the spot).but, it does get us to think about our assets, commitments, liabilities, how to title items, save for retirement, etc.i don't think that it introduced anything new for family lawyers.but, it is a very practical hands-on booklet for attorneys as well.i highly recommend this booklet for attorneys, couples divorcing, and, even for couples considering marriage (pre-nuptual agreements, etc.).i give it an "A-"!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative
I got this book for my mother, who is currently separated from my father. She is not planning on a divorce at this time, but they are estranged, and she wanted to be prepared should the need arise. My mother tells me that this book is very informative. Being a Nolo book, it's not only extensive, but easy to read, as well. It covers every topic relating to divorce, and even mentions legal separation, all with a special view to persons nearing retirement age or older. It tells you what types of divorces exist, what sort of things you need to be collecting (such as proof of infidelity or abuse) and it may even help you make the all-important decision of whether to get a divorce or a legal separation. It answered questions that my mother didn't know to ask!

Highly recommended if you are middle-aged and find yourself in a situation where divorce might be pending. Get it well in advance, so you can be fully prepared for what you'll go through.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is NOT for already retired couples.
This book is pretty good. It's focus is on people that are over 50, but NOT yet retired. I am 69 and my wife is 70, so this book did not have much to contribute to us. It is good for "still working" persons over 50 years old. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to share with your children during or after your divorce
I bought this, and several other books on divorce, to share with my 11 year old son and 8 year old daughter.Although we went throught the divorce process several years ago my children were younger and didn't have the questions and concerns they seem to have now. They have also had to adjust to their father's new wife and children.I had noticed recently that they seemed to really be struggling with a lot of new feelings. This book addressed a lot of these feelings and gave great insight from both a child's perspective and a mother's perspective. Some of the chapters that hit home with my children were "Where I'd rather live: If you wish you could change your living situation", "Nobody asked my opinion: If you are mad, sad, or scared" and "I don't want another sister: If you have to deal with blended families".
Throughout the book there are real life examples of kids questions and great answers by the authors. There are also "quick tips" and other useful tidbits my children really related to.All in all this is one great book among many, but it made a difference in our lives.Thank you Zoe, Evan and Ellen Sue Stern!

This is a book that is written by kids, for kids.I bought it for my kids and liked it so much I started using it in my work as a social worker.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Stern children give a lot of good information
Divorce is Not the End of the World, now in paperback, is a revised and updated edition of the 1997 version.

With almost half of the marriages in the United States ending in divorce, a lot of kids are impacted. Even if some children have not personally experienced divorce in their family, they most assuredly know kids who have have. This is a difficult situation and Zoe and Evan Stern's book can provide some helpful information that is practical and thought-provoking.

The added advantage of the Sterns' book is that their mother, Ellen Sue Stern, weighs in with information and answers. Together the three Sterns offer kids some guidance, encouragement and the knowledge that they are not alone, that their questions are normal, the feelings they are experiencing are okay and that divorce is difficult, but it is not the end of the world.

This book provides an in-depth view into the psychology of the divorcing family, particularly as it applies to children. Although there are bits here and there that seemed a bit overly dramatic, I found it overall to be a helpful resource and would recommend it to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful
I read this book four years ago, before my divorce.I credit the book with giving me a fairly level head throughout the entire separation/divorce process. The focus on how you and your ex will be joined at the hip for the rest of your lives for birthdays, graduations, weddings, etc. coupled with the authors' pragmatic advice made me realize what a long haul it was - I had to just get over all the emotional baggage and look forward to a life as a different kind of family, but a family nonetheless.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is having trouble in his/her marriage. My ex-husband was also willing to read it, which helped a lot. I really think this book helped me and my ex-husband figure out how to co-parent in a friendly, non-threatening way. ... Read more
