The book takes a sober look at both the offenders and the victims. For the former, models are proposed to understand the attitudes that can arise in groups that led to or provide favourable grounds to their behaviour. The role of alcohol is examined. A non-trivial factor in many circumstances. The psychology of stalkers is also covered.

For victims, or survivors, as the book terms them, there are costs. Including very real financial costs of health care. Plus the intangible but all too real issues of post traumatic stress disorder and depression.

Various interventions and preventative measures are mooted. Some are based in involving men in being aware of the full consequences of actions. And in trying to adjust the social norms to make some actions unacceptable. ... Read more

Batterer Intervention Systems responds to this debate with research from a multi-site evaluation of batterer programs—the most comprehensive and extensive evaluation to date. It critiques current experimental evaluations, exposes the complex issues of evaluation, and presents alternatives to assessing effectiveness. A four-year follow-up of program participants reveals a surprising de-escalation of abuse, a subgroup of unresponsive repeat reassaulters, and the difficulty in identifying the most dangerous men. The Batterer as Parent
This book highlights serious problems in how children of abusers are frequently victimized in the court system, as a result of inadequately trained advocates.It is thoroughly researched, with several pages of professional references cited.A must-read for anyone involved in these custody issues!

This book is excellent and provides needed insight into the inner workings of the family effected by abuse.
This book really captured the essence of what has happened in our home for so many years. It provides solid reasoning for why my children's feelings are so twisted and their memories so warped. It has been helpful for my recovery because it has made clear and spelled out those things that I could never make sense of. This book would be great for helping to enlighten judges, custody evaluators and many women and their children who've been victimized by a batterer. I highly recommend it.

In a Class by Itself
I have read several books and articles on domestic violence, custody evaluations, and family recovery from domestic violence. This is the first title in that arc of subject area that presented a detailed and accurate picture of what constitutes a batterer and the batterer's effect on partner and children. There were no equivocations, no excuses, no back-pedaling to pander to the popular view that victims are either actually responsible for their and their children's plights, or they are fabricating to achieve some selfish end. I found a brief, but comforting refuge between the pages of this very insightful and thorough study. I highly recommend it to every custody evaluator and family court judge (and every family member who was been battered emotionally, physically, verbally, economically, or in any other way.)

Best Book in Print about Batterers
In the middle of a very ugly divorce, I found this book to be the best.It is simiple to read with real live situations and real research.Not based on textbook learned behaviors.It gives a very realistic view of some very ugly situations.It was like reading my life story with insights on why my divorce got so ugly with a man whom I thought I loved.

This is a must read for every emotionally charged divorce.

This book succintly provides critical information for judges, therapists, parent evaluators/GALs, and most importantly parents trying to protect their children from harm.It highlights the many misconceptions present in the legal system that enable abusers to continue to victimize their children and spouses, and explains how these situations should be addressed, backed by data to support the authors' conclusions.This is a credible well-written book that provides a rational counter to the awful theories of Richard Gardner. ... Close but not quite
While Richard Felson (2002) argues that mysoginy has no relaitonship to domestic violence, his argument is internally inconsistent in terms of both statistics and substance. First, the numerical data he presents often contradict his conclusions. For example, Felson states that "women are just as likely as men to be the victims of violence from their partners, at least in Western Countries." This statement directly contradicts his own research findings (p. 37) and Bureau of Justice Statistics (Craven, 1997) which which he provides that show that 20.7% of women are victimized by intimates compared to only 2.8% of males (Felson, 2002, p. 49; see also page 111 for another example).

On a substantive level, Felson frequently conflates the trivial with the traumatic. For example, Felson argues that women's greater use of complaining and anger in relationships "casts doubt on the idea that men's violence against their wives reflects a greater desire to control them" (Felson, 2002, p. 104). Felson thus compares complaining with a "tooth loosening assault intended to punish, humiliate, and terrorize" (Dobash, Dobash, Wilson, & Daly, 1992, p. 75). Note also that the radical feminist theory of domestic violence which Felson purports to critique never states that men have "a greater desire to control" their wives than do their wives but rather contends that battering is a technique by which men control women. Felson thus fails to address the central feminist proposition that battering results in increased power and control for men.

These errors in fact and logic re-occur throughout Felson's work and completely undermine his argument which is unfortunate because this is a topic which deserves careful, well-documented, and thoughtful consideration. ... Read more
