Product Description
It is generally acknowledged that the most cost-effective means of curtailing alcohol and drug abuse is prevention. Providing interventions to at-risk individuals before they develop serious problems with substance use is the most important component of the "war on drugs." Fortunately, the past decade has seen a dramatic increase in the quantity and quality of scientific research on those areas crucial to the advancement of prevention science.

This book compiles a tremendous amount of information about prevention which has accumulated in recent years. Documenting these accomplishments and setting the stage for future efforts comprise the focus of this book.

Prevention and Societal Impact of Drug and Alcohol Abuse is divided into four parts. Part I contains introductory chapters addressing current issues in prevention science and characteristics of abusable substances. Part II includes chapters on the historical contexts of substance abuse and the deleterious health consequences of alcohol and other drugs. Part III focuses on the impact of drug and alcohol abuse on society. Included are chapters on alcohol and drug abuse and driving, infectious illness, disability, managed care, the criminal justice system and adolescents and adults, sale and distribution, the media, and community responses. Part IV consists of chapters on prevention in specific settings and with certain populations.

Product Description
"From one of the most visible and highly respected figures in medical journalism comes a book that can literally save lives.

During the past several years, doctors at leading institutions acrossthe nation have been investigating the relationship between breastcancer and diet. The recent flood of medical studies confirm that whata woman eats can have a dramatic impact on whether or not shecontracts the disease. In The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet, Dr. BobArnot, in his unique, expert fashion, has synthesized this researchinto an eating program that finally enables women to fight back.

The breast cancer prevention diet is designed with all women in mind;whether you want to guard yourself against the onset of breast cancer,or protect yourself from recurrence, the diet offers valuableinformation that will address your particular needs, including plansfor:

-women with high estrogen, who are therefore at a higher risk -postmenopausal women with lower estrogen levels -breast cancer survivors -women with a familial history of breast cancer

-young women who want to take precautionary measures.

Back again with his simple yet enormously powerful premise, Dr. Arnot encourages you to think of foods as drugs -- without the side effects. Although you can't single out specific foods or toxins that initiate breast cancer, you can still take charge of your diet -- and in the long run, your life. There are certain foods that can significantly decrease your risk. With a clear overview of the biology of the breast and information about the way in which cancer spreads, Dr. Arnot offers helpful, practical guidelines that will allow you to incorporate these powerful foods into your diet. The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet is easy to follow, complete with delicious menu suggestions, cooking techniques, and the general information women need to make significant dietary choices that could ultimately save their lives. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fine research, but needs to be updated
If you want to drastically reduce your risk of breast cancer, lots of information in this book will help you.For example, consume more fiber and more vegetables.Eschew alcohol. But, this book is now 12 years old and new research is available. Please ask Dr. Arnot to update his book with current research.

3-0 out of 5 stars Food is good medicine
My mother passed away at 69 from a 2nd round of breast cancer that spread throughout her body. Her mother, my grandmother, lived to almost 89 and died of natural causes. What was the difference? My Greek grandmother had a diet rich in olive oil, fish, homegrown herbs and vegetables. My Mom kept dieting, hated exercise, and even eliminated protein from her diet (including fish), and she also developed osteoporosis. We have so many environmental factors that we can't control, so it really makes sense to be good to yourself with your diet. I'm for a mediterranean diet that includes organic fresh food. My Greek grandfather lived to 102, and so did his mother, my great-grandmother.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for the Ladies
In THE BREAST CANCER PREVENTION DIET, Dr. Bob Arnot considers breast cancer in terms of its causes, its pathology, its treatment, and its relation to other cancers.Dr. Arnot tries hard to keep the medical jargon down to a minimum but his opening discussion of estrogen receptors might be a bit too deep for those with little medical backgound. Nevertheless, his analyses of the underlying causes represent what was then (1998) cutting edge technology and still holds relevance today. His position that certain foods may actually reduce the incidence of breast cancer or even eliminate it is far less controversial than some of his detractors hold who insist that obesity rather than diet is the determining factor. For Dr. Arnot, diet is supremely important not onlyfor the standard nutrients like vitamins and minerals, but also for the less well-known presence (or absence) or more exotic elements like Omega-3 fish oils, antioxidants, and genistein.Arnot connects a number of loose nutritional threads like fiber, body fat, insulin levels and soy and flax products that synergistically interact to reduce if not eliminate breast cancer.Arnot is fond of charts as he uses them judiciously to list and rank various subcategories of anti-breast cancer components. For example, for those who wish to increase their intake of Omega-3 fatty acids but do not wish to do so by tablet supplementation, his chart on page 88 identifies from highest to lowest those fish foods that are particularly rich in that oil.He later addresses an often overlooked factor in cancer growth: the glycemic index that identifies foods that on one level seem healthy due to nutritional content but on another contain excess glucose to the extant that blood sugar diseases like diabetes would become likely.Much of his other advice is rock solid and well-known.His chapter on fiber clearly explains what it is, how it operates, and how it can reduce both body weight and breast cancer. Here he presents another handy chart that lists common fiber rich breakfast cereals by name.He finishes with erudite analyses of antioxidant capacities of selected fruits and vegetables, chemical estrogen avoidance strategies, and what he terms "road maps" as breast cancer prevention plans. The advice he writes of is not limited to women. If men were to follow the same advice they would benefit in ways not limited to avoiding breast cancer. In fact, Dr. Arnot's book can be seen as a general guide to good health that just happens to have a particular use toward breast cancer.Good advice, he notes, has more than one focus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the 1 stars....
This book is based on clinical trials, on going studies, and observations from respected MDs.One of the main points explains the role of estrogen and estrogen blocking foods and drugs. This is the best way to fight the estrogen driven cancers that are plaguing American women today. My mother has stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to her bones, at that stage they don't even do chemo or radiation because it's incurable, and there's not enough evidence that it will help. The only thing that helps keep this cancer in check is estrogen blockers. The reason this healthy, active, organic food eating person got this cancer is because she was on hormone replacement therapy for the last 15 years. The information in this book has been keeping her alive and feeling well.If you have cancer, good luck to you.Food is one of your best medicines.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Diet Can Prevent Breast Cancer
Dr Arnot knows that no diet can prevent breast cancer. With the exception of alcohol (two or more drinks a day), no diet or foods have been conclusively linked to substantially increasing or decreasing the risk of breast cancer. It is disappointing that a tv doctor who is familiar to millions chose to give false hope to readers -- and make money from it. He should be embarrased and ashamed to be cashing in on women's fear of breast cancer by claiming that there is any combination of food and supplements that can prevent breast cancer.Anything for a buck! ...
